The succession battle over late businessman Sunjay Kapur’s ?30,000 crore empire has taken a contentious turn, with his sister Mandhira Kapur levelling serious allegations against family members. Sunjay, known in public life as actor Karisma Kapoor’s former husband, left behind a vast business legacy now at the centre of an escalating dispute.
In a conversation with CNN-News18, Mandhira accused Sunjay’s widow, Priya Sachdev Kapur, and other relatives of pressuring their elderly mother, Rani Kapur, into signing documents at a vulnerable time. “I was there, banging on the door, not knowing what was going on. I know the doors were locked. My mother told me. She was in a grieving space. She did not know what was going on. I spoke to her, she told me, ‘I have signed something. I did what I was told. I don’t know what I have signed.’ She was very upset,” Mandhira recalled.
According to her, despite repeated requests, the family has not shared copies of the signed documents. “Since then, we have been trying to find out what my mother signed. We are not getting any answers,” she said, stressing that the issue was about protecting the family’s integrity rather than inheritance.
Rani Kapur herself addressed the matter in a letter to Sona Comstar’s board, describing her son’s death as “sudden and suspicious” and objecting to company decisions taken without her consent. She asked for the postponement of the firm’s AGM, but the company went ahead, stating that she is not a shareholder and her objections hold no administrative weight.
The dispute now appears headed to the courts, with legal experts predicting prolonged litigation over both the contested documents and the company’s leadership decisions.
Meanwhile, Sunjay’s children with Karisma Kapoor, Samaira and Kiaan, have also moved the Delhi High Court with claims over the family fortune. Their case added another dimension to the already complex battle on Wednesday, as lawyers debated ownership and succession rights in the sprawling Kapur business.
As the feud unfolds, the Kapur family’s private tensions continue to spill into public view, with each turn of the case raising more questions than answers about the fate of one of India’s most high-profile business empires.
