Sooraj Pancholi, the actor who was charged with abetting the suicide of his alleged girlfriend Jiah Khan in 2013, has been acquitted of all charges by a special court in Mumbai. Following the verdict, Pancholi took to Instagram to express his gratitude towards those who stood by him throughout the legal battle. He thanked his supporters for their “unconditional love prayers and duas” which helped him endure years of suffering and pain.
His note read, “Thank you to all those who have always supported and believed in me, only I know how I have lasted through all these years of suffering and pain. Your unconditional love prayers and duas have been my only strength…I could not have survived without you."
Pancholi was arrested by the police in 2013 after a six-page letter, allegedly written by Jiah, was found in which she had accused Pancholi of mentally harassing and physically abusing her.
Jiah Khan’s mother, Rabia Khan, has always maintained that her daughter was murdered and had demanded a CBI probe in the case. In 2014, on the order of the Bombay High Court, the CBI took over the case from the Maharashtra Police. Rabia had alleged that Jiah was in an abusive relationship with Pancholi, who is the son of actors Aditya Pancholi and Zarina Wahab.
On Friday, Sooraj Pancholi appeared in court with his mother, Zarina Wahab, and was cleared of all charges. Following his acquittal, he posted a message on Instagram which read, “The Truth always wins! #GodIsGreat”.
The case had grabbed headlines and had been a topic of debate in Bollywood for years. With Sooraj Pancholi’s acquittal, the legal battle comes to an end, but the tragic incident is likely to be remembered for a long time to come.
