Sitaare Zameen Par overcomes censorship roadblock, secures CBFC nod for exclusive theatrical release

After facing last-minute hurdles with the censor board, Aamir Khan’s much-awaited film Sitaare Zameen Par has finally received clearance from the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC). The film is now set to release in theatres on 20th June 2025, as officially confirmed by the makers.

Earlier this week, reports suggested that the CBFC had demanded two specific cuts in the film before granting a certificate. These changes reportedly involved certain dialogues and scenes that were flagged for sensitive content. However, Aamir Khan had initially refused to make the edits, stating that each scene had meaning and was important to the story. This refusal led to a delay in certification, raising doubts about whether the film would meet its scheduled release date.

Now, it seems the matter has been resolved. Sources close to the production confirmed that after further discussions with CBFC officials, the film has received its certificate, possibly with minimal or no changes. The nature of the final decision remains undisclosed, but the important news is that Sitaare Zameen Par will now hit theatres as planned.

The film, said to be a spiritual successor to Taare Zameen Par, deals with themes of inclusion and childhood challenges. Aamir Khan not only plays the lead role but also backs the film as a producer. Fans have been eager for this project, especially as it marks Aamir’s return to the big screen after Laal Singh Chaddha.

Overseas, the British Board of Film Classification (BBFC) had already approved the film with a 12A rating, noting minor references to discrimination and mild sexual content. No cuts were suggested there.With the censor issues now behind it, Sitaare Zameen Par is all set to open across theatres in India on 20th June. The makers have also confirmed that there will be no OTT release initially—it’s a theatre-only experience. Fans can now look forward to seeing Aamir Khan back with a powerful story, just in time for summer.
