Singham Again: After many years, we saw a proper multi-starrer with the Rohit Shetty film. Here is a look at five things he got right

Singham Again is the big release from Bollywood this Diwali. Rohit Shetty has brought together his Cop Universe casting Ajay Devgn, Ranveer Singh, Akshay Kumar, Kareena Kapoor Khan were teamed with new joinees Arjun Kapoor, Jackie Shroff, Tiger Shroff and Deepika Padukone as Inspector Shakti Shetty. The movie has made Rs 43.7 crore net in India on the first day. Rohit Shetty has played to mass sentiments weaving the story with a Ramayan angle, India’s fight against terrorism and so on. In the 1970s and 80s, we had many films with top stars that attracted a diverse fan base. There were some of them (two-hero projects) even in the 1990s but they died a slow death. Cost issues and insecurity between actors is the main reason.

In Singham Again, Rohit Shetty seems to have done a few things right. While Ajay Devgn is the soul of the movie as Bajirao Singham, the movie does a great job in introducing the newer characters. The filmmaker has succeeded in giving a back story to all of them, which is quite commendable. Rohit Shetty made sure all the stars were introduced in a manner that did justice to their superstar image. The entry of Akshay Kumar on the helicopter, and Salman Khan as Chulbul Pandey is particularly good.

Rohit Shetty has done the elevation scenes pretty well. They are one of the key elements of a good masala entertainer. Whether it is Ranveer Singh or Akshay Kumar, the entries are whistle-worthy. The top stars too seemed to have enjoyed working together. The camaraderie has translated on screen, and we can feel the vibe. Zoya Akhtar did this quite well with Dil Dhadakne Do way back in 2015. It was a treat to see the Gunday boys Ranveer Singh and Arjun Kapoor back together. The film reaffirms that two hero projects are also needed in Bollywood.

Singham Again shines with its BGM, sound design and some massy dialogues. While the screenplay is a bit lacklustre, the crisp editing makes up for it. The second half has the Rohit Shetty stamp all over it. He has proved that he is one of the few who can truly handle stars in his movie.
