Ratan and Diya's marriage in 'Rishta Likhenge Hum Naya' - Breaking societal norms or against it?

The show seems to have come under our critic radar yet again.

It all started with Shashi Sumeet Mittal's Sony TV show, Pehredaar Piya Ki where a 9-year-old Ratan (Afaan Khan) was shown marrying an 18-year-old Diya (Tejasswi Prakash). Not only did the viewers, but many of the telly actors too had not taken the show well while some were in favour of whatever was happening.
After much hullaboo, the show did go off-air suddenly, but only with a promise by the makers to return with a show on the same grounds. The makers did come back with a new show in the form of Rishta Likhenge Hum Naya starring Rohit Suchanti as the grown-up Ratan and Tejasswi as Diya.

The show has been received well by the viewers this time around now. However, with the track going back to something what we originally saw, this time around there was a 21 year Ratan marrying a 30 year Diya, courtesy Abhay's (Suyyash Rai) decision of not marrying Diya out of revenge.

What followed Abhay backing off from the wedding was nothing short of a typical Indian TV show, but in a rather mild version as Ratan decides to walk up to the mandap and fill sindoor in Diya's forehead.

Though we did know that the two will marry gradually, but under circumstances almost opposite to what happened when Ratan was 9, we did not see that coming.

This actually made us run a poll, where we asked the viewers themselves as to if this is acceptable or not, and this time around, everyone is completely fine with such a marriage.

Here's what the polls suggested:

Well, we think that there is in fact nothing wrong with the marriage, the idea or the show does not really harm any of the societal norms in any way.

Both are adults now so not an issue obviously. Last time when 18yr old married a 9yr boy, that was crime punishable by Indian law.

But what is still utter regressive is the fact that girl left at altar just marries anyone who is ready to show sympathy. What was the need of marriage? If one guy left, she is left on the mercy of some other guy. WHY? Nayi soch shud be girl and her family pack up things and go home with dignity without getting the girl married bcoz of what society will think or how will this poor girl get another groom syndrome. Anyways what to expect from a show that was justifying child marriage and even discussed their honeymoon.

Please! I can name dozen of shows whom are against 'social norms'! If it has been other way around there wouldn't have been a tiny sound from anyone! Why don't IF for once target shows such as IB, ZKM, of any other 100 shows out there where female leads are being tortured and abused by male leads in the name of love! It is so widely popularised and romanticised by Gul khan and Ekta kapoor, that it's such sick! And it makes me want to beat up someone everytime starplus starts the crap about nayi souch! Just an idea for IF to maybe be creative next time and actually write about some actual 'social norms" problems.

Seriously IF, r u really media portal if yes den plz behave like dat at least try to be fair nd logical. Did you kept any poll wen 40 year old man married 18 year girl if nt why u didn't?? So according to u dat s nt against ur so called sociteal norms bt marriage between 30 year old girl nd 21 year old boy is. So here I conclude two things, one s ur thoughts r regressive like hell second u r so much obsessed with RLHN dat u even didn't thought wat de hell r u doing. Get a lyf ASAP...

What's your problem now IF now both are adults still trying hard to make an issue out of nothing. Have never seen such regressive media portal. So for you abusive marriages, bigamy, extra marital affairs and female lead marrying person who is double of their age are social norms but having hard time to digest a 21 year old marrying 30 yr girl utterly pathetic

What is the problem of IF with Rishta show ? I don't watch the show but I am pretty sure I don't think IF gave out an debating article when Ahana and Anant wed in Dil Sambhal ja Zaara. If that marriage was hailed as creative and critically acclaimed then what is the problem with this marriage ? Compared to that marriage I would say this is much palatable. And IF is pretty regressive in the sense it keeps on targeting few shows and keeps on giving negative articles for no reason. If you pride yourself as an entertainment portal be fair and give the facts. IF is slowly losing its credibility.

This time around Ratan is an adult. So what's the big deal? Even in real life, we have seen such pairings and some of them have culminated in successful marriages like that of Sachin Tendulkar and Anjali. The only reason audience felt that societal norms were broken was when they showed an 18 year old marry a 10 year old boy who was crushing on her.

you are digging your own grave IF.. never seen sucha regresive media.. and targeting Tejasswi Prakash and rishta likhenge hum naya from its inception.. this is so cheap.. btw wat are the so called social norms? who set up those norms?? you are trying hard to make a controversy ryt?? had u made a poll when younger girl gt married to elder guy? is it bcz its right in your social norms book? get a life guysss..

Ha ha .. when bollywood has been practicing it since long ago what is your problem IF. Farhan Akhtar, Amrita Singh, Sunil Dutt... all even Sachin Tendulkar..
Like every so called " Standard normal Marriage" these too may face problems but not necessarily due to reverse age gap
