On October 16, 2024, actress Radhika Apte made a joyful announcement at the BFI London Film Festival, proudly displaying her baby bump for the first time. In a departure from the typical social media pregnancy reveals, Radhika chose to share the news in a more personal way—through her red carpet appearance. However, in a candid conversation following the announcement, the Ghoul actress shared that she and her husband, Benedict Taylor, had never originally planned to have children, even joking, “We don’t even know how to dress a baby.”.
In a recent conversation, Radhika explained that when she first noticed her baby bump, she thought it might go unnoticed. But as it turned out, it was too visible to miss. She admitted that, had it not been for the film premiere, she might have kept her pregnancy under wraps for a while longer, as she never intended to make a public announcement on social media.
The Andhadhun actress shared that she and her husband, London-based musician Benedict Taylor, had never really planned to have children. However, she described their initial reaction to the pregnancy as “a funny story,” explaining that they were in shock and denial until about two weeks ago.
She humorously added that they don’t even know how to dress a baby, but acknowledged that it has finally started to sink in for them.
The actress revealed that having children was never part of her plan, making the experience quite an unexpected twist and a significant turning point in her life. She explained that the adjustment took time, as she had never considered what pregnancy entails or the physical and emotional changes it brings.
“Having children was never really part of our plan,” she revealed, adding that it was an unexpected twist in her life. The adjustment to pregnancy has been a learning curve for her, as she admitted she had never really considered the physical, emotional, and mental changes that would come with it.
Radhika also discussed the sacredness often associated with pregnancy, noting that it can sometimes obscure the challenges many women face. “Pregnancy is not always an easy or enjoyable experience for everyone,” she said. “I think there’s a lot of romanticization around it, but for me, it’s been difficult.”
The actress shared that her journey has been physically and emotionally taxing, especially as someone used to leading an active lifestyle. Her first trimester, she revealed, was particularly challenging, with symptoms like severe bloating, constipation, and nausea. To make matters worse, she had to continue working in 40-degree heat for three months while filming, which added to the difficulty.
Reflecting on the unsolicited advice she received from well-meaning people, Radhika admitted that she was frustrated by the constant refrain to "just be happy" because she was expecting. “It’s like people don’t acknowledge that you’re also dealing with a lot physically and emotionally,” she explained. “At times, I just wanted to punch them.”
Despite the challenges, Radhika’s openness about her experience offers a refreshing perspective on pregnancy, shedding light on both its joys and difficulties. As she embraces this unexpected chapter of her life, it’s clear that the journey is one of growth, change, and plenty of surprises.
