There are talks about the brutality and violence being shown on screen, be it on OTT or films. Some examples would be Kashmir files, Delhi Crime, Talwar, Bheed, The Kerala stories and so on. While some enjoy the same, many don’t. Tere Ishq Mein Ghayal actor Nikkhil Arya shares his opinion on violence, action and crime subjects dominating the screen.
“I may be sounding too cynical but it's too late now and we as a society are simply going from bad to worse. We are just not ready to face the truth. The majority of our country is uneducated and poor and still has that weapon of slow mass destruction in their hands, the smartphones,” he continues, “Why only talk about violence on OTT, we have no checks and balances across the board. What about the easy access to porn/ violent porn? What about betting sites? I have seen tons of people addicted to these sites including minors, it's depressing.”
Referring to the content on OTT, Nikkhil points out that “reality probably is worse than what's shown on the tube”.
He adds, “But it all depends on who is consuming it. For example, the same violent series/film will get a different reaction from audiences of Uttar Pradesh and a different reaction from Karnataka...Why?, because the culture, background, education, everything between the two are different. One more thing is that makers should exercise their freedom of speech responsibly, not like a propaganda tool. Once the CBFC clears a film there is no question of banning it, that is hoping they operate in an unbiased manner. After all as they say ‘films reflect society and vice versa’. The maximum violence comes from our very own fake unverified whatsapp university. It is consumed by all age groups, you are brainwashed by force and even some educated people lap it up with zero censorship on whatsapp and we censor people's freedom of speech...scary!”
In conclusion, the actor opines there are solutions if the people at the helm want to bring about change. “Like doing something about easy access to certain content on the net to people not eligible, if we don't, we are staring down a deep hole and giving birth to a very scary new generation,” he says.
