Kajol's comeback in 'Maa,' a mythological horror film directed by Vishal Furia, has seen a mixed reception. After a modest opening of Rs 4.65 crore on Friday, the film showed a slight increase on its second day, and early estimates suggest it has now surpassed Rs 10 crore at the box office.

As per trade tracker Sacnilk, Maa earned Rupees four point six five crore on its opening day and followed it up with Rupees five point four crore on Day Two. Despite receiving mixed reviews, the film held its ground, bringing its total domestic collection to Rupees ten point zero five crore. On its first Saturday, the film saw a Hindi occupancy rate of twenty-two point three six per cent starting with nine point nine four per cent in the morning, which picked up to twenty-six point eight seven per cent in the afternoon and peaked at thirty point two six per cent during evening shows.

While 'Maa' marked Kajol's return, it premiered alongside Vishnu Manchu's ambitious mythological drama 'Kannappa,' which began strongly with Rs 9.35 crore on its first day. However, in contrast to 'Maa's' slight increase in earnings on its second day, 'Kannappa' experienced a decrease in collections.

A part of the review of Maa by India Forums read, “Kajol, known for her powerhouse presence, brings her usual energy, but this time, it feels hollow. She plays Ambika with strength, but not enough emotional layering. Her grief after losing her husband? Barely felt. Her desperation as a mother? Shown, but not experienced. Only in a few scenes with her on-screen daughter, played by the promising Kherin Sharma, does the connection feel genuine. Their bond is the only warm thread in an otherwise cold film."

"Maa tries to be many things: a horror tale, a mythological reimagining, and a mother's emotional journey. But in trying to do it all, it forgets to do any of it well. It had the potential to be a deeply unsettling and emotional story of a mother turning into a goddess to save her child. But the impact is lost in its confused storytelling,

underwhelming scares, and overcooked drama."

In Maa, a mythological horror thriller, Kajol stars as Ambika, a mother determined to shield her daughter from malevolent, supernatural entities. The film weaves together myth and mystery, representing Kajol's debut in the horror genre. The cast also features Indraneil Sengupta, Jitin Gulati, and Kherin Sharma. Directed by Vishal Furia, Maa is produced by Ajay Devgn and Jyoti Subbarayan.
