Alia Bhatt and Karan Johar's latest release, Jigra, has faced an uphill battle at the box office since its debut on October 11, 2024. Directed by Vasan Bala, this prison-break thriller had high expectations but has struggled to attract audiences to theaters. Released alongside Rajkummar Rao and Triptii Dimri’s Vicky Vidya Ka Woh Wala Video, Jigra has been in the spotlight, but not for the right reasons.
The film, which stars Alia Bhatt and Vedang Raina, has been mired in controversies ever since its release. Accusations of manipulated box office numbers and claims of favoritism have overshadowed the movie’s performance. Produced by Karan Johar’s Dharma Productions, along with Alia’s Eternal Sunshine Productions and Viacom18 Studios, Jigra has completed its first week in cinemas, but the box office numbers have been far from promising.
Opening to mixed reviews from both critics and fans, Jigra had a lukewarm start, collecting Rs 4.5 crore on its first day. Though the film saw a slight rise on its second day, earning Rs 6.5 crore, it has since experienced a sharp decline in ticket sales. According to early estimates, the movie’s seventh day witnessed its lowest single-day collection of around Rs 1.25 crore, bringing the total first-week earnings to approximately Rs 22.26 crore.
This disappointing performance marks a low point for Alia Bhatt and Karan Johar, especially when compared to their previous box office flop, Kalank (2019). Despite having a star-studded cast that included Madhuri Dixit, Sanjay Dutt, Varun Dhawan, and Sonakshi Sinha, Kalank had also struggled to find success, managing to collect Rs 78.78 crore in its first week. With Jigra failing to even reach those numbers, it is shaping up to be one of Alia’s weakest box office performances to date.
As Jigra continues its theatrical run, it remains to be seen if the film can recover from its slow start. However, given the current trajectory, the film’s fate at the box office seems bleak, leaving fans and critics to wonder if this will be another misstep for the talented actress.
