Today we, at BollyCurry, are celebrating the birthday of a versatile star who has showcased his talent in movies from all genres, including action, romance and comedy! Any guesses? We're talking about none other than Ajay Devgn!
Born as Vishal Veeru Devgan to stunt and action choreographer, Veeru Devgan, and film producer, Veena Devgan, he's the brother of director Anil Devgan. Devgn studied in Juhu at the Silver Beach High School and Mithibai College; and little else is known about his early life. He shies away from the media and has admitting to letting his work do the talking for him.
After dating his co-star from Gundaraj (1995), Kajol Devgn, for nearly five years, he married her on 24th February 1999 in a simple Maharashtrian ceremony. Together they have a daughter named Nysa, born on 20th April 2003, and a son named Yug, born on 13th September 2010. In August 2009, he changed his surname from Devgan to Devgn at the request of his family.
After appearing as a child star in Pyari Behna (1985), Devgn debuted as a main lead with Phool Aur Khante in 1991 which clashed with Yash Chopra's Lamhe, but managed to do extremely well and earned him a Filmfare Award for the Best Male Newcomer. He then appeared in films such as Jigar (1992), Dil Hai Betaab (1993), Dilwale (1994), Suhaag(1994), Gundaraj (1995), Ishq (1997), Major Saab (1998), Pyaar To Hona Hi Tha (1998), Kachche Dhaage (1999) and Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam (1999).
In 2000, he starred in Deewane essaying a double role for the first time, but the movie failed to do well. Later that year, he appeared in his first home production film Raju Chacha directed by his brother Anil, and opposite Kajol. He reached the peak of his career with Company (2002) where he was seen as Malik, a gangster. The film did extremely well and his performance was much appreciated by critics earning him a Filmfare Critics Award for Best Actor. He then appeared in a few other films such as Khakee (2004), Apaharan (2005), Insaan (2005) and Omkara (2006) in various roles before stepping into comedy with numerous blockbusters such as Golmaal (2006), Golmaal Returns (2008), Sunday (2008), All the Best: The Fun Begins (2009), Atithi Tum Kab Jaoge? (2010), Dil Toh Baccha Hai Ji (2011), Bol Bachchan (2012) and Son of Sardaar (2012).
He is also a director and producer and starred in his first directorial film under his home production banner U, Me Aur Hum with wife Kajol in 2008. His acting and direction were much appreciated by critics and audiences alike and the film did well at the box office. Devgn's upcoming films are Action Jackson, releasing 2nd October 2014, and Singham 2, releasing 15th August 2014, which is the sequel to the blockbuster Singham (2011) where he was seen as a cop fighting against evil.
