‘There is no deity superior to the Guru, no gain better than the Guru’s grace and no state higher than meditation on the Guru.’ -Muktananda
Guru Purnima is a special tradition in Hindu culture dedicated to teachers and mentors. Mainly celebrated in India, Nepal and Bhutan by Hindus, Jains and Buddhists, people celebrate this day to show their gratitude towards their gurus. Indians hold great respect for their gurus and we have seen many examples like the one in Mahabharata when Eklavya gives away his thumb as a ‘Guru-Dakshina’ to his mentor Dronacharya.
A guru-shishya relationship is extremely special, so this Guru Purnima, let’s look at some shows with beautiful Guru-Shishya stories…
Tamanna:
Star Plus show Tammana featuring Anuja Sathe was a beautiful and inspiring story of a young woman named Dharaa who aspires to become a cricketer. The plot of the show was extremely refreshing. Due to unavoidable circumstances, she is forced to marry a guy who turns out to be controlling and chauvinistic. Fed up of his atrocious behavior, Dharaa divorces him and and starts working as a coach.
In the show, Dharaa is both a student and a coach and undergoes a fabulous character development.
Television version of the blockbuster movie Dangal, Kesari Nandan is a beautiful story of a young girl who wants to fulfill her father, a celebrated wrestler’s dream of his son following his legacy. Hanumant (Maanav Gohil) is a legendary wrestler and desperately wanted a son to continue his legacy, but instead he has a girl. He doesn’t think girls getting into wrestling is a good idea, so Kesari (Chahat Tewani) dresses up as a boy to learn wrestling from him.
The show is written beautifully and there are many guru-shishya moments that won our heart.
Star Plus show Meri Durga traces the journey of a girl named Durga who aspires to become a runner. It’s a beautiful story about a father-daughter relationship and how after struggling a lot, her father finally allows her to pursue her dream. She is trained by Rana Sir and her training moments from the show are really inspiring.
Popular Colors’ show Udaan started off by showing bonded labourers and their life journey. Later the protagonist of the show Chakor (Spandan Chaturvedi) aspires to become a professional runner and later on, we see her training for the same. That phase of Chakor’s life with her trainer is showcased beautifully.
Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah:
SAB TV’s most popular comedy show, Tarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah’s character Bhide is a tuition teacher and provides tuition to all the students of Gokuldham Society. He shares a special bond with all the kids and cares and worries for them as his own.
