Genie Make A Wish: Bae Suzy, Kim Woo-bin's show slammed by Muslim viewers for the Iblis concept

Genie Make A Wish that is airing on Netflix is being called out by Muslim viewers the world over. As we know, Korean drama writers have often been criticized for cultural misappropriation. Muslim viewers have said the story is lifted from the concept of Iblis (equivalent of Shaitaan) and his love story with a human is shown. They said even the back story is taken from the Quran. While Bae Suzy and Kim Woo-bin enjoy a good global fan following, many Muslim fans have decided to boycott the series. However, many feel that people should not take it so seriously.

The fantasy rom-com is written by Kim Eun-sook who is also the talent behind Goblin and Mr. Sunshine. The story is about Iblis, a Satanic genie. He is banished to hell but strikes a deal with God. He says he will prove how corrupt people inherently are. Iblis succeeds but fails in front of a Goryeo girl. Years later, they are reincarnated and Iblis hopes he can prove that people can be corrupted. Muslim viewers have said that Iblis cannot be used a fantasy rom-com concept. Song Hye-Kyo had a cameo appearance and she too looked straight out of Aladdin’s tales.

Some fans have cut the writers slack saying it is just fiction. However, others feel it could have been shown in a better manner. This is not the first time such an incident has happened in K-dramas. The duo of Kim Woo-Bin and Bae Suzy have been part of hit shows like Uncontrollably Fond. Kim Woo-Bin is also looking very handsome in Genie Make A Wish. The kissing scenes have also started going viral.

Bae Suzy’s performance is also being liked a lot by viewers. We have to see if the team responds to the same. Some days back, Tempest faced flak for saying China is “fond of war” in the drama.
