Rachi Sharma, who played Purvi in Kumkum Bhagya, is now stars leading Sony TV’s new fiction show Aami Daakini. The series explores a horror narrative with romantic elements, marking a genre shift for the actor. In an exclusive interview with India Forums, she discusses her new role, her character Meera Ghosh, and the transition from her previous show.
Tell us a bit about Aami Daakini and your character in it.
Aami Daakini is primarily a horror show with elements of romance woven into it. It's intense and mysterious in tone. I play the role of Meera Ghosh, a young woman who works in customer care and is very devoted to her family. Meera lives with her father and younger sister. She’s grounded, emotionally strong, and practical. She does feel things deeply, but she doesn’t let her emotions take over. She might be hurting inside, but she won’t let anyone see her cry or appear vulnerable. Her mother passed away when she was a child, and the circumstances of her death have led the entire village to unfairly blame Meera’s family. That backstory shapes a lot of who Meera is today. The show follows her journey as she stands up for her family, how she meets Ayaan, and how their connection grows amidst all the horror that surrounds them. Meera comes from a middle-class background, and financially, the family struggles. She is the primary breadwinner, while her father does small jobs, including working as a watchman at a mansion. Since losing her mother, Meera has taken on a maternal role for her sister. She’s not just an elder sibling but also a guiding and protective figure in her sister’s life.

I finished my journey with Kumkum Bhagya in February. Even though the main shoot was done, they called me back for a few more days to wrap up some remaining scenes. I agreed to do it. I spent about fifteen months playing Purvi, and that character was very different from Meera. Purvi was sensitive and very expressive with her emotions. She would cry and react openly. Meera is different. She is more in control. She does not cry easily and faces tough situations without showing weakness. That shift between the two characters has been interesting for me. The shows are also very different. Kumkum Bhagya was a family drama, while Aami Daakini is a horror show with romance. The change in genre and tone has been a new experience, and I’m getting to work with a very different kind of story.
With Aami Daakini, Rachi Sharma steps into a new space both in terms of genre and character. As the show progresses, it will be worth watching how Meera’s journey unfolds amid supernatural elements and personal struggles. For Rachi, this marks a new chapter in her television career, with a role that contrasts sharply with her previous work.
