Fathers
are an important figure in life, and that's why there came into existence a day when
we could celebrate our fathers. Today, on that special day, we are celebrating the
fathers of Bollywood. Here BollyCurry presents some of the lovely father characters of Hindi cinema and
their signature dressing styles in their films, in no particular order.
Aamir
Khan was seen in the role of a father for the first time in
Akele Hum Akele Tum. Seen as the poor
boy falling in love with the rich girl,
Aamir Khan's attire was commonly
jeans and a cotton shirt. After marriage and after the birth of their son, he
continued to wear the jeans and cotton shirt, which soon started looking worn
out and unclean after his marriage dissolved. He had played the role of
Chachu in
Hum Hain Rahi Pyaar Ke before, where this trend had actually begun
as he was seen as the manager of a small clothing factory. Then 18 years later,
in
Talaash,
Aamir Khan returned to
the role of a father who was a police officer. He was almost always seen in his
police uniform, which represented his role of a strict, no-nonsense cop.
Alok
Nath was the quintessential father, who was loving, caring, and religious. Some
of his movies were
Hum Saath Saath Hain,
Vivah,
Pardes,
Ek Vivah Aisa Bhi,and
Hum
Aapke Hain Kaun. Almost always seen in a
dhoti kurta or suits, he played the loving father or fatherly figure, who
cared for his children and always protected them. He always had principles and
was religious, which he passed onto his children who easily accepted his
principles and religious ways.
In
Baabul,
Sarkar, and
Sarkar Raj,
Amitabh Bachchan was seen wearing mostly
dhoti
kurta. In
Sarkar and
Sarkar Raj, seen less as a father and
more as a Godfather, his
dhoti kurtas
were often dark and mainly black, which represented his role of a Godfather of
sorts. In
Baabul, while he played the
role of a businessman who was a friend to his son (
Salman Khan), after his
son's death, he was also again seen mainly in
dhoti kurta, yet here it was white. It represented mourning for his
son, but at the same time it represented purity in his thoughts when he decided
to get his daughter-in-law, played by Rani Mukherjee, married again, much to
the disappointment of his family and of the society. In
Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham,
Amitabh Bachchan was seen mainly in
business suits which represented his role of a strict, businessman, who would
not bend his rules for his son. In the end, however, we see him wearing a
dhoti kurta and is wrapped in a shawl,
which in this case was seen as a sign of growing old or being weakened, which
represents the last scene when he breaks down and asks forgiveness from his
sons.
Now
we bring to you a father who has played both good roles and villainous roles.
We are talking about
Amrish Puri! While in
Dilwale
Dulhania Le Jayenge, he was seen in the role of a strict father who would
not bend his principles for anyone. Seen mainly in
dhoti kurta as well, his clothes were always crisp and clean, which
represented his character as well. In
Kishen
Kanhaiya and
Ram Lakhan, Amrish
Puri was seen as the villainous father who wanted money and property for
himself. Usually dressed in dark colours and mainly in either business suits or
dhoti kurtas, his clothes also seemed
to exude the evil presence that would surround his characters. Such things as
pointed shoes or lots of rings were often part of the attire. As a father, he
cared little about his children leaving them to his wife, while he was busy executing his evil plans.
When
we talk about fathers, you may not think of
Salman Khan, but he has played his
fair share of a father in many movies, including
Ek Ladka Ek Ladki (where he actually was a
Chacha, but was called
Papa
by the children),
Jab Pyaar Kisi Se Hota
Hai,
Biwi No. 1,
Shaadi Karke Phas Gaya Yaar, and
Baabul. In
Baabul and
Shaadi Karke Phas
Gaya Yaar,
Salman Khan was seen playing the role of a responsible,
humorous, young businessman. And as per his role, he was often seen in clean,
crisp collared shirts and business pants, but also in jeans and t-shirts. His
clothes represented his clean, down-to-earth, responsible character in these
movies. In
Ek Ladka Ek Ladki, Salman
Khan played the role of a poor farmer Raja who takes care of his bigger brother's
3 sons. As per his role, his clothes were seen to be unclean and he was often
seen in the same clothes again and again. He was almost always seen wearing a
black vest over his clothes, unless it was songs where he interchanged between
many different checkered shirts that were quite prominent in that time. In
Biwi No. 1,
Salman Khan was seen in the
role of a young businessman, the father of 2 young children, who gets into an
extra-marital affair. As a businessman, he was seen in clean, crisp business
suits, which very often represented the fact that he was rich and well-to-do.
When he wasn't wearing business clothes, he wore jeans, a white t-shirt, and
different coloured jackets or shirts. This represented the fact that he was
still young and had good fashion sense. Finally, in
Jab Pyaar Kisi Se Hota Hai,
Salman Khan was seen in the role of a
womanizer, who finds out that he has a son from one of his past flings. Wearing
jeans and sweaters mostly throughout the movie, he would often woo women with
his charm and simple clothing attire. When he finds out he is a father and
accepts his son, his clothes become simpler and more refined representing the
responsibility and the change in his life.
Finally,
we bring to you
Shah Rukh Khan, who has also seen in father roles. The first time
he appeared as a father was in
Kuch Kuch
Hota Hai. Before he married and had a daughter, he was often seen wearing
jeans and t-shirts, but 8 years later, after he became a father, he was seen
mostly wearing shirts, pants, and jackets. His clothes represented the
responsibility he took on and the changes in his life as he became a father.
Then in
Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham, he
was again seen as a father after he went against his own father to get married to Anjali (
Kajol Devgan).
Here he was once again seen in similar clothing as he was seen in
Kuch Kuch Hota Hai. He was seen as a
playful, friendly father who was more of a friend to his son, than a father.
However, when he would become serious, his clothing would become somber
colours. In 2006, Shahrukh Khan again acted as a father in
Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna. Playing the role of a disgruntled, injured
coach, he was mostly seen in dark coloured jackets and jeans. While he was
disgruntled, he was a good father being a friend mostly to his son. Finally, in
My Name is Khan,
Shah Rukh Khan played
the role of a person with Asperger Syndrome who falls in love with a single
mother. Seen in collared shirts, jeans, and jacket or sweater, he wore simple
clothing representing his simplicity. As a father, he was more of a friend and
companion, which once again represented his simplicity and kind nature.
There
are many other actors known for playing father roles, including
Anupam Kher,
Rishi Kapoor,
Abhishek Bachchan,
Utpal Dutt,
Dharmendra,
Sunny Deol,
Govinda,
Prithivraj Kapoor,
Raj Kapoor,
Randhir Kapoor,
Boman Irani, Mithun Chakravorty,
Ashok Kumar,
Sanjeev Kumar,
Pran,
Dilip Kumar,
Sunil Dutt,
Rajesh Khanna, and
many more!
Fathers are not just there to take
care of us or to teach us right or wrong; they are our friend, our guide, and
our companion as well. They fight with us, they argue with us, they sit with us,
they comfort us, they guide us, and they listen to us. Today on Father's Day we
celebrate these amazing fathers. And while you all sit back and read this
article, and think about the reel fathers, for a moment take the time out and
also give your real fathers a hug and thank them for being there for you
always!
