In a recent interview, wrestler-turned-politician Babita Phogat made a shocking revelation regarding the financial compensation her family received from the hit Bollywood film Dangal. The film, which earned a massive Rs 2,000 crore worldwide, was based on the inspiring real-life journey of the Phogat family. However, Babita disclosed that her family was paid only Rs 1 crore for the project.
During her interview with News 24, Babita shared this surprising detail, leaving the anchor visibly taken aback. The anchor reconfirmed the figure, asking, “Out of Rs 2,000 crore made from Dangal, the Phogat family received only Rs 1 crore?” Babita simply nodded in agreement and affirmed, “Yes.”
Despite the staggering difference between the film’s earnings and what her family was compensated, Babita maintained a gracious attitude. When wuestioned about her feeling disheartened by the situation, she reflected on the values her father lives by and told them to abide by.
She explained, “No, father always said one thing – we want people’s love and respect.” This heartfelt statement underlined the family’s humility and focus on the bigger picture rather than financial gains.
Dangal, released on December 23, 2016, was directed by Nitesh Tiwari and starred Aamir Khan as Mahavir Phogat, who not only played the lead role but also co-produced the film. The movie depicted Mahavir Phogat’s determination to train his daughters, Geeta and Babita Phogat, to become world-class wrestlers, despite societal pressure. The film was a massive hit, resonating with audiences globally and earning widespread praise for its emotional narrative and powerful performances.
The Phogat sisters’ real-life journey in wrestling has been nothing short of remarkable. Babita Phogat has an impressive track record, winning a silver medal at the 2010 Commonwealth Games and a gold medal in 2014. She also secured a bronze medal at the 2012 World Wrestling Championships, further establishing herself as a leading figure in the sport. Although Babita represented India at the 2016 Rio Olympics, she did not secure a medal.
After retiring from wrestling in 2019, Babita transitioned into politics, continuing her commitment to public service and making a difference beyond the wrestling mat.
