Coming up with a sensitive issue by a new production house has impressed me!- Suhasini Mulay

Shakuntala Devi happens to be the mother of the Kamal Narayan who is running the silk factory. They are politicians and industrialists and somewhere landlords as well. Being feudal, they also keep bonded labors. Shakuntala Devi is the person who is in total protest. The level of protest has gone to a point where she is confined to her room. She is a Gandhian and has a Charkha in her room. She is constantly quoting Gandhiji when she is speaking on various issues. But again, in a sense, she has protested and is tired now. So her protest is limited to not taking anything from her children. She has to live in this house because her children were politicians and it would be terrible if their mother lived somewhere else. She is a bonded labour in her own house. 

When Chakor comes into the house and realizes that she is bonded, then she protects her. She picks up the courage against to fight.

 

Of course, having Mahesh Bhatt associated with the show made a difference. But there is also Javed Siddiqui who is writing the script. He has done a whole body of work which is amazing. I just believe that script is the king. For a television series, I believe if you have a good script, if you have a good story, and incredibly well executed, it definitely works. Television series in its genre is very different from the films. People know when you walk into a theatre, within the two hours, story will be over. When people start watching television, they do not know how long it will go.

With a topic like Udann, there are infinite facets to be examined, infinite stories to be told. So, I think that in a sense, being into a series and especially the secondary characters like me, we still have a space to examine our characters which we do not get into films. To me, in some way as an actor, it is more interesting because it has more facets to explore. 

Of course Mahesh Bhatt being a part of the show makes a huge difference. For me, what else that made a difference was the new production house. Dhaval Gada and Guruodev Bhalla opting for an out of the box theme take a lot of courage. Their step to make a show on such a sensitive issue and not going by the set genres like comedy and saas-bahu drama impressed me even more. 

Any genre, any story line including saas-bahu drama gets copied because it was successful. A film is copied because a similar film was a hit. Audience has had an overdose of similar kind of shows and stories. More and more audiences with the coming up of multiple channels are watching a very sophisticated presentation of themes and stories. Certainly people have a window to a different kind of viewing menu which was really not there before. Every part of that change has come into the audience because they are being exposed to many kinds of genres. If you see vampires, they want to see how the same look in Hindi would. I am glad that it has happened because it has a lot of fresh air, fresh things happening in. I really hope that the trend continues.
