Anurag Kashyap's apology after rape threats to daughter and friends: 'Colleagues getting rape and death threat

Anurag Kashyap, known for his bold views, is once again making headlines. Recently, he has been expressing strong opinions against film censorship and caste issues in India. But his comments took an ugly turn when his daughter, friends, and colleagues began receiving rape and death threats online.

On April 17, 2025, the filmmaker took to Instagram to express his concern. He first criticized the government for censoring films like 90, Punjab 95, Tees, Dhadak 2, and Phule. Later, he addressed the caste system, which sparked backlash from certain sections of society.

But things took a disturbing turn when online abuse began targeting not him, but his family. Anurag then issued an apology—not for what he said, but for one particular line that got taken out of context.

Sharing his thoughts, he wrote, “This is my apology, not for my post but for that one line taken out of context and the brewing hatred. No action or speech is worth your daughter, family, friends, and colleagues getting rape and death threats from the kingpins of sanskar.”

In a follow-up post, Anurag added emotionally, “So kahi hui baat wapis nahin li ja sakti aur na loonga lekin mujhe jo gaali dena hai do. Mere parivaar ne na kuchh kaha hai na kahta hai. Isliye agar mujhse maafi hi chaahiye to ye meri apology hai. Brahmin log, auraton ko baksh do, itna sanskar to shastron mein bhi hai, sirf manuwaad mein nahin hai. Aap kaun se Brahmin ho tay kar lo. Baaki meri taraf se maafi.”

The controversy started when Anurag revealed that the censor board told him during Dhadak 2 screening that “Modi ji ne India mein caste system khatam kar diya hai.” He questioned this logic, especially since another film Santosh was also blocked. He boldly asked, “Bhaiya, jab caste system hi nahin hai to kahe ka Brahmin. Kaun ho aap? Aap ki kyon sulag rahi hai?”

This storm has once again raised the issue of how quickly public discourse turns personal and dangerous, especially for families of public figures.
