The Tamil film industry is in mourning after popular actor and comedian Robo Shankar passed away in Chennai on Thursday evening. He was 46.

Robo Shankar, known for his versatile comic timing and character roles, collapsed on a film set on Wednesday. Crew members rushed him to a private hospital where he was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit. Despite efforts by doctors, he did not survive. Hospital sources indicated that he passed away around 8.30 pm.

The actor is survived by his wife Priyanka and daughter Indraja, who herself appeared alongside Vijay in Bigil. His sudden death has left his family, colleagues, and fans stunned. The body will be taken to his residence where arrangements have been made for the public to pay their respects on Friday.

Robo Shankar made a mark with performances in films like Dhanush’s Maari, Vishal’s Irumbu Thirai and Vishnu Vishal’s Vellainu Vandhutta Vellaikaran. His brand of humour and supporting roles earned him recognition not just in cinema but also in television, where he was a familiar face.

Tributes poured in from across the industry soon after news of his passing broke. Veteran actor Kamal Haasan was among the first to respond. In a heartfelt Tamil poem, Haasan addressed Robo Shankar as a younger brother, writing, “Just because you have gone doesn’t mean you have left me.” The poem reflected on the brevity of life and concluded with the line, “As you have left tomorrow for me, tomorrow is ours.”

Filmmaker Venkat Prabhu also expressed his grief. Posting on X, he wrote, “#RIProboshankar gone too soon my friend. Deepest condolences to family and friends.” Several other actors and directors followed, recalling Shankar’s energy on sets and the warmth he brought to his roles.

The loss of Robo Shankar comes as a major blow to Tamil cinema, where comedians have long played an integral part in shaping stories and reaching audiences. For many, his passing feels like the end of a chapter in contemporary Tamil comedy.

As fans gather to bid him farewell, Robo Shankar is remembered not only for his on-screen presence but also for the laughter and light he brought to countless homes.
