Aamir Khan, known for his blockbuster films like Ghajini, PK, 3 Idiots, and Secret Superstar, has always been particular about his projects. His collaborations with renowned filmmaker Rajkumar Hirani have been box-office successes. However, in a recent interview, Aamir revealed that despite PK being a hit, both he and Hirani were not completely satisfied with how the film turned out.
In a conversation with Just Too Filmy, Aamir shared that both he and Rajkumar Hirani had different expectations from PK. He said, "The film worked well and it’s a big hit, but Raju and I are not happy with the final resolution. It was because there was something else in Raju's mind when he started writing the film. He was going somewhere else (vision-wise). Then he realised ‘Inception has come, and it has come with the same thought. People will say that I'm copying the film.’”
Further explaining the thought process, Aamir revealed, "It was his original thought. You know, how to change what you feel about something. For example, if you don't love the red colour now, I go back to your childhood and change that red colour. Today, you will like it. It shows how you can change a person's vision by going into his/her mind and altering something in the past—that was his thought."
During the interview, Aamir was also asked about his approach to test screenings before a film’s release. He explained that it varies for each film. "In the first five screenings of the film, we thought that there is nothing in the movie—meaning people are loving it so much and don’t have any problems with it."
Recalling audience reactions to 3 Idiots, he shared, "People said, 'If you put the movie again, we'll watch it again.' We realised it was a unanimous response. The movie had 7 to 8 screenings because we got to know very early that people were reacting the same way every time."
Some films, however, required more work. Aamir admitted, "Delhi Belly took very long—the film’s first cut was not working, the second cut was not working, and even the third cut didn’t work. Even Taare Zameen Par’s first cut didn’t work. There are a lot of films where testing helped us make them better."
Aamir’s honesty about PK proves that even a successful film may not always align with the creator’s original vision.
