Resham Dankh goes on air on Star One

Courtesy: UNI

Television actor Rahil Azim better known as the villanious Ashmit Gujral in ''Yeh Meri Life Hai, is back on small screen after a long hiatus.

Raahil plays Aditya Balraaj a business tycoon in new daily soap ''Resham Dankh'' to be aired on Star One from August 14.

Raahil is cast opposite Mauli Ganguly who also makes a comeback after her serial ''Kahin Kissi Roz'' wrapped up few years ago. She was part of ''Sarkar'' a political thriller on Zee tv some time back.

Talking to UNI, Raahil said ''Resham Dankh'' was based on Atish Kapadia's Gujarati novel by the same name. ''We have shot about eight to ten episodes. The idea of the serial steamed from the story that Aatish Kapadia penned down for Chitralekha. It has a definite beginning, middle and end and will not drag on endlessly like other soaps,'' he added.

Speaking about his new character, Rahil said he plays the protagonist in the serial which he describes as a ''social thriller''. ''The story is about a business family and how a child born into the family brings it closer,'' he added.

The actor, earlier played ''Hatim'' on Star Plus and also was part of Ekta Kapoor's ''Kahi Kissi Roz'' and few other serials.

But, his role in ''Yeh Meri Life Hai'' gave him lot of fame.

''I got to portray different shades in one role. I got lot of fan following specially abroad. I got even more famous after my character turned negative,'' he recalled.

Speaking about Resham Dank, he said the serial will be aired from Monday to Thursday at 2130 hrs on Star One.

'Resham Dank' is a gripping drama of young parents' unconditional love for their child. A riveting story of unthinkable betrayal, revenge and supreme sacrifice, he added.

The cast also includes Sumit Raghavan and Apara Mehta amongst others.

The show will also see a comeback of veteran actress Sulbha Deshpande as 'Janki Mausi'. It will feature a small wonder Yash Bhadrani playing the key role of 'Dev Balraaj', Aditya's son.

Aatish Kapadia and J D Majethia whose current soap on Star Plus is Baa Baby Aur Bahu, interspersed with humour that is rarely successful on television, has conceived ''Resham Dankh''.

Resham Dankh to hit the tube on 14 August

JD and Aatish! Who JD and Aatish? For the uninitiated, the duo being referred to is Jamnadas Majethia and Aatish Kapadia, who run Hats Off Productions which has been behind Star TV's TRP toppers Khichdi, Instant Khichdi and the serious family drama Baa Bahu Aur Baby.

The two are readying to roll out their new production called Resham Dankh on Star One come 14 August every Monday to Thursday at 9:30 pm. The show is based on Aatish's novel of the same name. For those unfamiliar with it, it has also been adapted by Chitralekha magazine in Gujarati and Marathi.

Replacing Heartbeat (which moves to a new time slot), Resham Dankh is being touted as a social family entertainer with all the essential ingredients and varied emotions. The story revolves around a wonder child who changes a family's life.

JD Majethia:Capturing the 9.30pm timeslot

And like most Star TV show in recent times, it has a huge star cast which includes Sumit Raghavan, Raahil Azam, Moulli Ganguli, Apara Mehta, Punit Vashisht, Disha Vakani, Dimple Shah, Rajiv Mehta, Sulbha Deshpandey, and Manva Naik. The six year old who plays the pivotal role is newcomer Yash Bhadrani who bagged it after a huge round of auditions (of more than 200 kids).

"We were discussing a couple of ideas with Star senior creative director Shailaja and she wanted us to take up a comfortable story and when I discussed Resham Dankh with her she loved it," reveals Majethia. "We have tried to change the screenplay and have added new characters to the story thus making it interesting for the readers who've already read Resham Dankh and for the viewers. Also the show will have an intrigue factor which will have the viewers wanting for more each week."

Aatish says he got the idea of Resham Dankh while traveling from America to

Aatish Kapadia:An expert at comedy and social dramas

Canada in in 2000 and by 2002 he had already published it as a book. "It's about a child who works as a catalyst for the whole family. For now we are all committed to working and are not bothered about the outcome," he adds. This is not the first time that he is experimenting with a genre beyond comedy as he has written for Ek Mahal Ho Sapno Ka and Alpaviram in the past.

When the new show launches, it will be a distinction of sorts for Hats Off. It will have a tight grip on the 9:30 pm slot through the week on the Star TV network. Baa Bahu Aur Baby already airs Friday to Sunday on Star Plus at 9:30pm.

Hats Off to you JD and Aatish.

Nine elements in 'Resham Dankh'
IANS
Friday, August 04, 2006

J.D. Majethia of Hats off production says that after "Sarabhai vs Sarabhai" they have come up with a unique daily soap "Resham Dankh" starting Aug 14 on Star One from Monday to Thursday at 9:30 p.m.

"The new show contains the nine elements of thrill, suspense, love, romance, betrayal and revenge among others," said Majethia at a press conference here Thursday, which was also attended by the serial's protagonists Mouli Ganguly and Raahil Azam.

The serial is based on a novel penned by Aatish Kapadia. It is titled as "Resham Dankh" because the Balraj family in the serial runs a business of 'resham' (silk).

"We have added new tracks and character in the serial so that those who have already read the novel must have something new to see," said Majethia.

The four days a week soap will run for 12 to 15 months. "As the complete story is already decided so every episode will have a lot of content and it will move on," according to Majethia.

According to him, Hats Off Production makes character based programmes. "Once audience will relate with the characters they will start enjoying the series," he added.

Awaiting Good Scripts

Ashish Mitra
Posted online: Friday, August 11, 2006 at 0000 hours IST

He is young and ambitious but will not take on anything that comes his way. Rahil Azim who's featured in serials like Hatim, Yeh Meri Life and the ongoing Saarthi is now busy with his latest Resham Dunk. Screen catches up with this budding artiste for a tete-a-tete... What is Resham Dankh all about?
Resham Dankh is a social thriller. The story is about a business family and how a child born into the family brings it closer. In short, Resham Dunk, is a story of a family and depicts ow a child changes day-to-day affairs of the family. This is a gripping drama of young parents' unconditional love for their child. A riveting story of unthinkable betrayal, revenge and supreme sacrifice. Who plays the child?
It is small wonder Yash Bhadrani who plays the key role of Dev Balraj, my son. The story sounds interesting.
In fact, the serial is based on Aatish Kapadia's Gujarati novel by the same name. The idea of the serial came from the story that Kapadia penned down for Chitralekha. It has a definite beginning, middle and end and will not drag on endlessly like other soaps. What role do you play in the serial?
I play the main protagonist Aditya Balraj, a very big business tycoon. He is a shrewd person but at the same time he is affectionate to the extent that he is obsessive about them. You got noticed in Yeh Meri Life Hai. What happened after that?
In Yeh Meri Life Hai, I played the villanious Ashmit Gujral. My role in the serial gave me lot of fame. I got to portray different shades in one role that helped me get a lot of fan following specially abroad. I got even more famous after my character turned negative. After the serial rounded off in November last, I decided to take a two-month break. Would you believe that I refused offers right from Prithviraj Chouhan, Akela and Viraasat. But when I went through the script of Resham Dankh, I was sure that it was written with me in mind. The confidence to portray the role grew and without hesitation I lapped it up.
Charismatic She's now a seasoned actress having done serials like Kaahin Kissii Roz, Saakshi and Sarkar. Still she considers herself to be a learner. Now Mouli Ganguli is busy shooting for Resham Dankh, that will be aired on Star One since August 14. Screen corners her for a brief interview... You were a student of Hotel Management and Mass Communication. How did you end up acting?
I am a science graduate from Kolkata and came down to Mumbai to do my hotel management. Soon I realised that I wasn't cut out for it and left it midway. Then I joined a course in mass communication, but didn't complete that either! (smiles) At this juncture, I started getting many modelling offers and believe me, despite my best efforts, I could not resist the temptation. Was there any objection from your parents?
I come from an educated family where people are settled in either a job or family business. Almost all my relatives knew hardly anything about this world. Entering the glam world was taboo for them. Hence initially there was a little resistance. Tell us about the modelling assignments you have done. I did a lot of advertisements prominent among them being those of Pears, Rin, Ariel, Close-Up, Double Diamond, Asian Paints, Sonam Quartz, Britannia, Maggie and Bombay Dyeing. What has been the fallout of Kahin Kisi Roz?
The fallout has been very encouraging. People still remember me as Shaina.Though I have been receiving offers by the dozens, I don't want do roles wherein I am required for two or three scenes because I am not ready to be projected as a mere showpiece. Besides, I am petrified of too much action. Like there was this scene I did recently in KKR, where my 'pallu' catches fire. The director did not want to use a dummy. I do not know how many times my heart skipped a beat. What's your role in Resham Dankh?
I play Divya Balraj, Aditya's (Rahil Azim) wife. Though Aditya has an elder brother, he isn't married. Hence, Divya has got a very important task to play in the family. My character is a mix of childish, romantic etc. In fact my role demands enacting of all shades. Have you worked with Rahil earlier?
Yes, both of us were together in Kahin Kisi Roz. Both of us got along very well.Rahil takes his job too seriously whereas I am of the type who would think that I could've done better. It is heard that before agreeing to do Kaahin Kissi Roz, you had told Ekta Kapoor that you don't want to be portrayed as a bahu.
Absolutely. I didn't want to people to relate me as a bechari. If you are nice, you can still be a confident go-getter without being timid and helpless. Having done a central role, will you play a second or a third bahu in a joint family?
I do not have an author-backed role in Resham Dankh. The role has lots of substance and I am almost there in every frame. If the second or the third bahu has that much weight, I am game. Once a director feels that I can do a particular role I take it as a challenge to do it.

How important is a director to you?
Please don't get me wrong. When I say that I have completely got into the skin of the character, that does not imply that I don't need a director. I am purely a director's actor. Without a director, I would be lost. I understand a director very quickly. Every director can extract the maximum out of me. Naturally, my best is a long way off.

Apara's date problems

Apara Mehta has her hands full! After Kyunki.. she signed on Saat Phere on Zee TV (though she's out of it now) and later went on to do Resham Dankh on Star One. But since Apara was keen on getting back into the Balaji fold she took on Karam Apna Apna; afterall it was Balaji which gave her all the name and fame.

But now a little birdie told us Apara's dates have gone for a toss, as she has to give more time for Karam Apna Apna. And couple this with her theater commitments, Apara also often travels abroad for her plays.

Now, we really wonder how she's going to manage so much work, as she's already been accused of giving more time to Balaji for obvious reasons. But knowingly fully well what a hard taskmaster Ekta is, lets hope Apara finds her balance.

Afterall, there is life beyond the K factory Balaji.

Sumeet replaces Kiran in Resham Dankh

Kiran Karmarkar who was to play a major character on Star One's upcoming show Resham Dankh has now been replaced by Sumeet Raghavan, who was earlier slated to play another character on the same show. Subsequent to this major change in the casting, the family drama has now undergone quite a few changes in terms of characters and script.

"The role offered to me now is much more challenging than the one offered earlier!"-Sumeet Raghavan

Producer JD Majethia says, "We have re-started on a fresh note. Honestly, when we started off we took a lot of time. So, after shooting four episodes, we made certain changes and started re-shooting."

So, were these change the reason for Kiran to leave the show? "When we made the changes we needed more dates from him, but that was not possible for him as he had other commitments. So, we had to move on without him being a part of the show," says the producer.

A source close to the production house reveals that they started re-shooting 15 days ago because of technical problems. He says "The lights were not up to the mark, so they had to shoot all over again."

Sumeet Raghavan will now be playing Shantanu Balraj, Rahil Azam's elder brother on the show. Rahil essays the lead role of Aditya Balraj.

"When they approached me for Shantanu's character, I did take some time to think about the same, as the dates were clashing with Akela. But, as it was Hats Off production I was very confident, so agreed upon the same. Also, this role is much more challenging than the role I was offered before. My character is that of a drunkard, and has sarcastic undertones to it."

"Because of some major changes, we had to re-shoot everything!"-JD

Sumeet Ragahvan's earlier character will now be played by Jiten Lalwani who is currently been seen in Sony's Rishton Ki Dorr and was a part of Kyunki…before the leap. "Yes, I am doing Resham Dankh. My role is that of Aditya's (played by Rahil Azam) best friend, and later on the show we turn out to be business rivals," says the actor.

Apart from these changes, Rajiv Mehta aka Praful of Instant Khichadi and Dimple Shah, a famous Gujarati actor who was last seen in Kudkudiya House No 42 on Sony will also be seen on the show.

"They have always been a part of the show, but were to enter the track after the ninth episode. But since it's a family drama, we thought that a house with only six people won't look good enough. In fact, it would look very empty, so now the audience will get to see everyone from the very beginning itself," affirms JD.

We hope after a clump of changes the show lives upto everyone's expectations!

Apara Mehta

Darshan Jariwala

Savita headed for splitsville?

Apara Mehta's husband Darshan Jariwala moves out of their house

Kunal M Shah

Apara Mehta aka Savita had an idyllic life in the Virani household. But her Utopia was restricted only to the small screen while she played the mother-in-law in Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Thi. Off screen her life is in sharp contrast. Recently, her husband Darshan Jariwala moved out of their Santa Cruz house and shifted to Andheri. The air is rife with speculation on whether the couple is headed for a divorce or is this just a temporary situation.

A source close to Darshan informs, "Apara and Darshan have been living separately for over three years now. They got married at a very young age and few years down the line, they realised that it was a mistake. They were not even remotely compatible as a couple. They've had several tiffs and have been drifting apart with each passing day. Darshan loves his daughter Khushali and she's the only reason why both continued to be together. But now Darshan does not see any reason to stay in a loveless marriage. Both live their lives according to their will."

Darshan and Apara have been married for 25 years. When contacted Apara said, "Darshan is a fellow theatre actor, chartered accountant and has also been a stock broker at the National Stock Exchange. We got married when I was 18 and he was 21. We have different ideas and believe in different things. After the birth of our daughter, we have not worked together. But that's because we had decided that one of us would look after her. He needs his own space and time but whenever we need him, he is there. I have never spoken about my personal life and never will. I don't think even Darshan will like to speak about it."

Clearing the air about her marriage she says, "We might not be living under the same roof but we are married." Darshan Jariwala remained unavailable for comment as he's in the US.

Resham Dankh cast meets Big B
By: Shaheen Parkar
August 14, 2006

Amitabh Bachchan with the Resham Dankh cast, including Sumeet Raghavan, Rajiv Mehta, Dimple Shah and child actors Tanya and Ulka
With the Big B around, it's natural for everything else to come to a standstill.

And that's what happened with the cast and crew of Star One's Resham Dankh, when the shooting of the show had to be stopped on Thursday. The reason? Big B was shooting in the vicinity (Filmistan Studios) for Ravi Chopra's Babul.

Big surprise

As word of his presence spread, the Resham Dankh set was also abuzz with talks of Bachchan's presence.

All that the cast and crew had uppermost on their minds that day was an opportunity to meet the legend. This resulted in the stars and the crew trooping in on Babul's sets for an unscheduled meeting with Bachchan.

"It was a matter of honour for the cast. And it came as a big surprise to them. Initially, they knew that shooting for Babul was in progress. But they didn't know that it was Mr Bachchan who was shooting there," says producer Jamnadas 'JD' Majethia of Hats Off Production.

Picture perfect

The cast had an opportunity to meet Bachchan, who even enquired about the show. He was particularly interested when he realised that it was a Star TV show, thanks to his old association with the channel and Kaun Banega Crorepati. They even posed for photographs with him.

Resham Dankh, set in a business family, is based on a Gujarati novel penned by Aatish Kapadia along with Mahesh Yagnik.

The cast includes Moulli Ganguly, Raahil Azam, Apara Mehta, Sumeet Raghavan, Sulbha Deshpande, Dimple Shah and Rajiv Mehta among others. It replaces Siddharth Basu's show Heartbeat from 9.30 pm today.

And unlike most of JD and Aatish shows (which include Baa Bahoo aur Baby, Instant Khichdi, Kudkudiya House No 43 and Sarabhai vs Sarabhai that are Gujarati-centric), Resham Dankh has a contemporary family of industrialists as the main protagonists.

But just when it seems like things couldn't get better, life takes a sudden tragic turn for Aditya! What happens next...

Characters:

Welcome to the Balraaj family. Take a peek into the lives of the dynamic, funny and loveable members of this family of quirky characters and hear them interact with each other even before you meet them on STAR One, this 14th of August.

Aditya Balraaj (Rahil Azim) Sensitive, loving and caring family man and a ruthless, crafty businessman as well! He is smart, sophisticated, clever and extremely witty. Brutally selfish in protecting his family and totally selfless in giving to his family.

Divya Balraaj (Maoli Ganguli) Aditya's dutiful and doting wife who knows her husband extremely well. She is Aditya's pillar of strength who stands by him in times of extreme crisis and does not shy away from 'calling a spade a spade' when the situation demands.

Dev Hemraj Aditya and Divya's miracle child. He is very sensitive and infact, he exhibits an unusually 'deep' understanding of life, for his age. Dev is adorable and the apple of his parents' eyes. You would say the same after seeing him as well!

Shantanu Balraaj (Sumeet Raghavan) Aditya's disillusioned elder brother. (He looks so too!) Haunted by his past and failures, Shantanu has become an alcoholic. He considers himself and his entire extended family parasites sucking on Aditya.

Gaurav Balraaj Aditya's brainless younger brother. A wannabe actor, unfortunately, Gaurav possesses none of the qualities required of an actor. Yet he always talks about making it big in the filmi duniya... Branded a 'looser', he is despised by his wife Kinnari.

Kinnari Balraaj Gaurav's clever wife. Extremely insecure, she believes that she has never got her due from the family because of her 'dumb' husband. She is extremely zealous about protecting and procuring what she believes is due to her and her daughters.

Janki Mausi (Sulabha Deshpandey) One of the eldest and most respected member in the family. She is the governess who has brought up the brothers Shantanu, Aditya, and Gaurav. Aditya dotes on her and holds her in very high regard. "Namaste Mausi ji!"

Brijesh Bafna (Rajiv Mehta) is the crafty brother in law of Aditya. Brijesh is a true parasite who lives sucking on Aditya. A veteran gambler, Baffna speaks half in words and half in gestures. He is disliked by the entire family except Aditya who tolerates him.

Poonam Bafna Brijesh's wife and the 'tragedy queen' of the family is in reality exaggeration personified. Melodramatic Poonam howls and bemoans the minutest materialistic loss... Doubt it? Don't worry, you will hear it yourself soon! Don't say, we didn't warn you!

Shaili Aditya's 'Woman Friday', his professional confidant and second in command in his enterprises. Much younger to Aditya, Shaili looks up to Aditya as her mentor. And know what... She is secretly but very obviously in love with him!

Satyajeet Arora He is Aditya's best friend. Satya has been with Aditya in both the good and bad times. No doubt, Aditya considers him as his personal confidant and seeks his advice on almost all matters, big and small! Quite a nice friend to have by your side.

Surekha Chachi Aditya's aunt is an aging 'fountain of youth'. Chachi believes that she is an incarnation of actress Rekha and lives in an illusory world where everybody finds her young, energetic and beautiful... Just like Rekha! Interesting right?

This Monday, from the makers of hit television comedies like Instant Khichdi, Sarabhai Vs Sarabhai and Baa, Bahoo Aur Baby, comes Resham Dankh, Hats Off Productions' first major foray into daily dramas.

Starring big names from the world of telly like Mouli Ganguly, Raahil Azim, Apara Mehta, Sumit Raghavan and Rajeev Mehta, Resham Dankh is based on a weekly story by Aatish Kapadia and Mahesh Yagnik that used to come out in the Gujarati magazine Chitralekha and was later converted into a novel.

"The serial has navarasa... all the ingredients for a successful soap," producer J.D. Majethia tells Metro. "Where it differs from other soaps on TV is that Resham Dankh is a finite daily. We have a beginning, middle and end and we know exactly where we wrap up."

That was very crucial for Mouli who has been selective about her small-screen assignments. "As an actress I am very happy because I know at the very outset where my character is headed," she says. "Initially when I got a call from Aatish and JD, I thought it must be a comedy and was disappointed to find Resham Dankh a drama. But when I heard the script, I was excited with the detailing of the various characters in the soap."

To be beamed on STAR One, the new serial will air from Monday to Thursday, every night at 9.30 pm. "Family-oriented dramas are very much an intrinsic part of TV-viewing in India," says Shailja Kejriwal, senior creative director, STAR India. "Resham Dankh targets the audiences who are looking at a contemporary story that retains the traditional ethos of our country."

Resham Dankh revolves around young parents and how their life changes when the first son in the family is born. "It is a super-rich multi-millionaire family that hasn't had a son in years," explains Majethia. "The elder brother is not married and the younger one has two daughters. What happens when the middle brother finally has a son, the heir to the empire, is the crux of the story."

To play out in a period of 12 to 15 months, Resham Dankh will replace the Siddharth Basu celebrity quiz show Heart Beat — Dil Thham Ke Khelo in the prime-time slot.
