CHAPTER ONE
It was a half moon night which was marking almost the end of the Holy Month of Ramadan. He was so very dead tired. It was an easy victory for him, for he had to defeat a fasting army. But no one knew that he himself was fasting as well. His rage was at its peak today. Killing him was something he wanted to do since ages. That gleam in his eyes, when he would look at her, yes her ! The one who he had marked ages ago as his own and nobody else's, would make his blood gush in an unknown fire of wrath. Finally, his mission was accomplished today. He was dead and she was with him. He was angry, really very angry with her for favoring him, spending more time with him, trusting him so much and perhaps maybe almost giving the place which only he held in her heart to that African slave.
No ! He thought in agony, hoping he was wrong, but he yearned to hear it from her instead. A part of him knew she would not betray him, a bigger part of him was in anguish for hurting her like this. But she would have to understand someday that he did it for her own good. Today it was Yaqut and Ayaz eyeing at her, tomorrow who knows how many more ? Ah ! How very innocent she was ! She could never recognize a person's intention from the first glance itself. She believed in transformation and second chances. So, would she ever understand his reasons ?
The fire had started to ignite from the time he was there in Delhi with her, but it was still under his control. The moment she sent him off to Bhatinda, rejecting his repeated proposals, calling him a distraction and someone who was jealous for no reason of her friendship with the slave, things began to get worse. Until one day when he could take the rumors no more. The rumors would sting his ears, making him want to bring the entire world down. That's when he decided he would bring her under his wing once and for all. He decided to side with those who had always wanted her downfall as a Sultan, for being a woman. Would she ever understand this ? So much of pain at once, but he will have to handle it.
He faced those who were almost rejoicing after her downfall, right outside his fortress.
"Malik Altunia !" addressed a noble, "Thank you so very much ! It would never have been possible without your strong support."
The man named Malik Altunia just nodded his head, unable to speak anything as a reply. What could he possibly reply ? Nobody except him and God knew the battle he was fighting within himself. Nobody knew why he had actually agreed to side with the Turkish Nobles.
"She is the daughter of our very beloved late Sultan Altamash" said another one sadly, "Beti jaisi hai hamari, she means something to us, but you must know this, a woman is never capable enough to rule, and her link ups with the African slave was no secret to anyone within the kingdom itself, but please do take care of her. "
Altunia glared at them with bloodshot eyes "Woh Mohobbat hai hamari !" He didn't know whether he was trying to warn them not to speak anything against her, or he was trying to assure them that he would give up his own life if required, to protect her.
"Hum jaante hai Subedar Sahab" said the Noble, "Yeh baat bhi kisise nahi chupa hai, shayad itni mohobbat unko koi aur nahi de sakta, isiliye hum sab ne bagawat ke liye aapko chuna, hamara maqsad bhi kamiyab hogaya aur Razia beti mehfooz haathon mein bhi aagayi."
"Hmm" replied Altunia, again lost in his thoughts. He didn't do any of this to help them ! He did this for her. He didn't trust her alone in Delhi under the influence of not just any slave, the slave he loathed the most. He didn't trust any of those men who would eye at her lustfully. He did not even trust these Nobles, who would gladly take anyone's support to bring about her downfall. And above all, he did not trust her, her soft heart and innocent soul, which was like an open treasure and easy prey to wolves like these.
"Shehzaade Yaasir ka khaas dhyaan rakha jaaye, woh hamare aziz hai aur aage jaa kar wohi Dilli ke takht par baithenge." he said in a firm and dominating tone.
"Beshaq !" said another Noble while the rest nodded in agreement. "Aap befikar rahiye."
Altunia nodded his head at them in Adaab, gesturing that this conversation is now over, he had had enough for the day. Now all he wanted was to go and see her.
They replied back in Adaab and turned around and left the gates of Qila Mubarak.
Altunia stood there silently for a few minutes, in deep thoughts about the day's events. Was he too harsh on her today ? But he had to be. She was stubborn, not someone who would surrender easily, and especially not to him. But something else struck him at the moment. Just as he turned around, he found himself looking at Zaroon, his buddy, his friend. But he had one more friend, who was not to be seen since he had won the war.
"Malik Atigen kahan hai ?" he asked Zaroon
"Jung ke baad woh kahin chale gaye, humein nahi pata kahan, kisiko nahi pata." replied Zaroon.
Altunia frowned in confusion "Humein bina bataye kahan jaa sakte hai ?"
Zaroon shook his head in disbelief "Unn par tumhara yeh andha aetbaar ek din tumhe le doobega Mirza !"
Altunia held his hand up and silenced Zaroon sternly "Gaye honge kisi zaroori kaam se, humein batane ka waqt nahi mila hoga, kal tak pata chal jayega humein."
"Tassali humein de rahe ho ya apne aap ko Miyan ?" asked Zaroon tauntingly.
Altunia threw him an angry look but remained quiet, Zaroon continued "Although I was against your decision for this rebel, I still admit that your reasons were personal but very strong. But Atigen ? Why was he so eager for this rebel ? What strong reasons did he have ? Have you ever thought over it ?"
"Zaroon woh yaar hai hamare, fikar hai unhe hamari, aur ek habshi ko itna ucchaa darza jab Razia Sultan dengi toh bagawat toh hogi !" He almost half yelled.
"Magar Miyaan..." but Altunia cut him off in between.
"Bas ab aur nahi, unka mudda itna zaroori nahi hai jitna ke..." he turned his head and asked a guard standing nearby "Razia Sultan kahan par hai ?"
The guard bowed his head and replied "Huzoor ! Sultan-e-Hind qaid khaane mein hai."
Altunia was furious. He held the collars of the guard "Tumhari himmat kaise huyi unko qaid khaane mein rakhne ki ?"
The guard was wobbling in fear "Huzoor, humein..."
"Khamosh zaleel ! " roared Altunia and pressed his neck choking him.
"Miyan chodo ussey !" Zaroon was pulling Altunia's arms "Bhala iski kya galti hai, qaidi ki tarah unhe laaye ho, toh kahan rakhenge unhe."
"Woh qaidi hai, hamari Mohtarma bhi, hamari Mohobbat aur junoon bhi." and he let go of the guard with a jerk and walked towards the fortress in a huff.
"Kahan jaa rahe ho ?" Zaroon tried to catch up with his pace.
Altunia just held his hand up "Hamara Mohtarma se milna zaroori hai."
The doors of the dungeons creaked open slowly. He tip toed inside with some unknown heaviness in his chest. What was this ? Fear of facing her ? Hesitant ? Or anger ?
She had heard the doors creak open but her eyes remained closed. She felt dizzy and giddy. Her fast wasn't opened properly. And the mental and emotional turmoil refused the will to eat anything at all. She neither cared nor wanted to know who had entered. She just stood there with her head against the wall, motionless with silent tears falling.
Altunia stood there next to her and his eyes fell upon her luminous face with shiny pearl like tears. He felt a sharp pang of both pain and affection. He had this strange urge of kissing her tears away. His fingers moved closer and closer to her face automatically.
Razia forehead formed a slight mark of confusion as she smelt the essence of the person near her at the same time felt her chest suddenly feeling lighter. She knew this essence. It was not just any essence. It was the essence that had the power to soothe her, always. This was his essence. And she flew her eyes open at once when his fingers were just centimeters away from her face. She moved backwards in disgust.
"Haath nahi lagana humein !" she said with gritted teeth.
Altunia was taken aback but not entirely shocked. He blinked his eyes snapping out of his trance. It was only then when he realized that she was still in chains. Horrified he moved forwards again to remove them. She ran off to one side. "Paas bhi mat aana hamare." she said in half anger and half nervousness.
"Hum bas woh unn bediyon ko..." He tried to explain. Her anger was justified. But why was she scared of him ?
She cut him off in between and said with teary eyes and an angry tone "Rehne deejiye inn bediyon ko. Yeh bediyan humein aapke daga ki yaad dilayegi"
"Daga humne kii hai ya aapne ?" asked Altunia simply.
"Kya farak padhta hai Subedaar Sahab ?" Hamara sab kuch toh cheen liya aapne. Ab yahan kyun aaye hai ? Kya bacha hai hamare paas ? Kya lene aaye hai humse ?" she taunted feeling as dizzy and broken as ever.
"Aap thakk gayi hai. Roza bhi tha aapka. Kuch theek se khaya bhi nahi. Aap chaliye yahan se. Aap yahan nahi rahengi." He said calmly.
This increased Razia's rage further "Kyun ? Humse itni humdardi ? Hum qaidi hai aapke. Qaidi ki tarah rehne deejiye. Ab bhi mann nahi bhara aapka ? Ab humein apna rakhel banana chahte hai ?"
Rage rose in Altunia's veins. His eyes became dangerous. So this is why she was getting scared of him. How could she even think something like this ? The rise of rage on his face frightened Razia. But before she could do anything, he stormed towards her and pulled her close by the waist and clenched her hair from behind to keep her face intact forcing her to face him.
"Sahi kaha aapne, Qaidi hai aap hamari" he said very dangerously. His eyes emitted fire that made her tremble in his grip. "Hum najaane kya kya kar sakte hai aapke saath, aur kisi ko bhanak tak nahi hogi, koi aapke cheekhein nahi sunega." He pulled her face closer and made his grip of her waist tighter. She flinched slightly in pain. "Ek bewafaa mehbooba se mohobbat kii hai humne, yeh aashiq itni jaldi haar nahi maan ne wala"
Razia's eyes were closing as she heard his last words "Aapko apna banakar hii rahenge, yeh Malik Ikhtiaar Uddin Altunia ka vaada raha aapse." And she passed out. He carried her in his arms and took her out.

"Inhe bukhaar nahi hai, bas behadd kamzoori aur thakaan" said the Hakim.
She was lying on the bed, in the personal room meant for his royal consort. Her chains had been removed, she was given a sponge bath to clean her wounds, on the bed itself and her clothes and been changed by the personal baandhis Altunia had appointed for her care.
"Yeh kaafi sadme mein hai Huzoor. Kuch dino ke liye inka khaas dhyaan rakhna laazmi hai. Inko neend ki dawa toh humne de dii hai, lekin iska poora asar sirf tab hoga jab yeh kuch khayengi."
"Inhe khaana khilana koi jung ladne se kam nahi hai Hakim Sahab" said Altunia with a sulk.
"Aap fikar na karey huzoor, humne aisi dawa dii hai ke inhe hosh aate hii badi bhookh lagegi, aur khaana khaata hii inhe kuch hi lamhon mein neend aajayegi" assured the Hakim.
"Aapka bohot bohot shukriya !" Altunia thanked him in half relief. His other half signaled him that something was going to happen soon.
The Hakim bowed to him in Aadaab and left.
************************************************************************************
She opened her eyes slowly and felt a strange pain in her stomach. A hunger pain. She turned her head weakly. This was not the dungeons ! She realized she was lying on a very comfortable bed, in a dimly lit magnificent room. She got up and sat upright in a shock immediately. Her head still felt slightly heavy. She clenched her stomach to get rid of the hunger pangs. It was then, when she felt her fabrics. She looked down at herself. Her clothes had been changed !
Did he...?? No !! She desperately hoped not. She looked around left and right in the room. No one was there. Not a soul except her. This was her chance she thought. She jumped out of the bed and as soon as she was on her feet she clenched her stomach again and fell down on the bed in weakness. No ! She wouldn't eat or drink anything that belonged to him !
"Think logically Razia. If you want to escape, you will need your strength.
His last words rang in her ears
"Aapko apna banakar hii rahenge, yeh Malik Ikhtiaar Uddin Altunia ka vaada raha aapse."
What did he mean by this ? Why did he want to make her his now ? Whatever it might be. She wouldn't let it happen.
She got up carefully, holding the bed's edges for support. She looked around for something, anything at all to eat and drink, and walked ahead slowly. The wind from the balcony blew slightly and a strong aroma hit her nose. She followed the aroma and found herself looking at a beautiful huge plate kept on a small table with a huge variety of dishes, sweets and fruits in it with a jug and glass of probably, water. She almost ran towards the table and picked up the jalebi and was about to take a bite and she suddenly stopped.
It looked like this plate was specially kept for her to eat. Was this some kind of trick ? Was it mixed with poison ?
No ! What is wrong with you Razia ? If he wanted to kill you he would do so long back. And as far as I know him he does not give any of his enemies an easy death. And even if this means I am going to die, I will gladly embrace death. I have nothing now to lose anyway.
She began feasting. Eating to her heart's content. She poured the contents of the jug into the glass and tasted the sweet rose water. When she was done she gave a last look around the room to make sure no one was hiding there and tip toed outside.
She was hell surprised to find the door un-guarded from the outside and corridor deserted.
Is this man a fool ? I am his prisoner and he has kept no one to guard me here.
But something told her to remain alert, for she knew Malik Altunia quite well, he was too smart for anybody. Just as she changed the corridor, she saw two guards walking from the long end coming in her way, talking to each other so they did not notice her. She shook in fear but before she could take her steps back, she was pulled in a corner. Before she could scream or even flinch, he clasped his hand on her mouth.
"Shhh !" Altunia whispered in her ears from behind with his other hand on her waist. She could feel his lips very close to her ears and her back literally fused to him.
"Cheekhiyega mat !" he continued to whisper in her ears, his breath tickling her now. "Hamare sipahi aapko pakad lenge, aur hamare alaawa koi aur aapko chuye, yeh humse bardasht nahi hoga, phir bila wajah unhe hamare hii hukum kii tameer karne ke liye saza-e-maut sunana padega humein." His tone had become both seductive and playful.
Razia tilted her head and dared to look into his green eyes with rage. He was smirking slightly as they had their eye lock. The guards went away and he removed his hand from her mouth.
She tried to wriggle out "Aapki himmat kaise huyi ?" she said softly with gritted teeth.
Altunia locked her right hand with his on her waist in front and took her left hand in his grip behind her back. Both their stares on each other became intense, hers with rage and his with passion.
"Aapko kya laga ? Mirza aap par nazar nahi rakhenga ? Aap hamari nazron se kabhie azaad huyi hai bhala ?" he said seductively as she kept wriggling
"Aur yun bhaag kar jaane ka kahan iraada tha ? Iss duniya mein aisi koi bhi jagah nahi jahan aap humse bach kar jaa sakein." His voice got more seductive and his eyes emitted fire. Her wriggling got slower, her eyes were droopy. Sleep was taking over.
"Hamari nazrein aapko dhoond hii legi" saying so he kissed her cheeks lightly from behind as she banged her head near his shoulder and fell asleep. He let her stay there for a few seconds, staring at her intensely, sleeping peacefully now and then carried her in his arms again walking towards her room.
