When Abhay walked into the canteen, he found Piya sitting on table. He was wary of her response especially after seeing her run away from him the previous night. He couldn’t help but feel the disappointment and hurt at her response to his reality. Logically, sure he knew it would be natural for Piya to be terrified. She was a human after all. Few weeks ago, this was the very reaction he wanted from her. To be terrified and then run away. But now when it was happening, he didn’t like it one bit. Only if he was more in control of his mind and thoughts he would have known better. For now, Piya was looking at him but did not say anything. He felt an urge to read her mind to put his own mind at ease but he found himself terrified to know what he would find there. Without using his powers, he went and sat beside her, half fearing her to flinch away but she didn’t. He looked at her with fearful gesture. Still nothing. Okay now this was starting to creep him out. Was she okay? He peaked on the page of the notebook that lay open in front of her. There were scribbles and crisscrosses on the page. Curious, he took a closer look.
Dream, Trick fire, Hallucination, Fireproof suit skin, Drugged, Adrenaline rush, Sleepy mind, Fake fangs,
What was she doing. He finally asked her, “What…are you doing, Piya?” Piya looked as if she was suddenly brought back to reality. “Oh, I didn’t see you there.” She pulled the notebook to other side hiding from him after seeing him trying to steal a glance. “Hey…”
“What is it? What are you listing?”
“I don’t want to tell you. You will just lie tome again.” Piya said and then pouted and after a moment she said again, “Ok fine. I have to ask. How did you do it? Was it a trick fire like the ones they use in those magic shows to put hand on fire? Or was it some sort of fire proof suit? I mean it was really good one. It felt very much like an actual skin. Or a hologram?” She quickly noted the possibility down in her page. “Was that some hologram effect? Was that fire even real or just projection?”
“Piya.., what- I don’t – what?”, he couldn’t even form a proper complete sentence. He had to admit one thing. Piya had the capability to stupefy him. He could not fathom what she was talking about.
“Occam’s razor. Simplest solution is often the correct one. And the simplest solution to yesterday night is that it was a trick. I am just trying to figure out what and how?”
That did not help Abhay. He could still not understand and he looked at her with straight face and dead eyes.
“Oh, dear god, did I imagine the whole thing? Was it a dream? I do that sometimes, you know. Forget that it was just a dream and not real. But it felt so real.”
Abhay ingested oxygen for his brain. He needed it.
“Piya, you understand what happened last night, right? You were in a hut that was on fire all around. I walked right in the fire, on the fire to save you. I can do that because I am -”, he looked around leaned closer to her and whispered “a vampire.”
Piya looked at him without any reaction and then said with a chuckle, “You are joking with me, right? Is it April fools? A prank? Oh, did you and Misha plan the prank together?”
“Piya shush. No one knows anything about this. This has to remain a secret. It is not a prank.”
“Then it must be some trick or illusion. Did you by any chance drug me or something? Did I hallucinate?”
“Piya there is no hallucination. It was all real.” Piya opened her mouth to say something but he cut her, “And no there is no hologram or anything like that. It was me. In flesh and bones.”
“Then fire proof suit it is. It has to be. I am all out of the options otherwise.”
Why was she acting this way? Did she hit her head when she ran away? Or did smoke get to her brain? Why did she refuse to believe what she saw?
Abhay what the hell is wrong with you? If she is not believing then why are you trying to change her mind? Its good for us if she thinks it was a trick.
Damn, he forgot to close his mind to his parents in all the confusion. They could read through all his thoughts. His mother was technically right. If Piya didn’t believe in supernaturals and vampire stuff then he had a really easy way out. But now he felt he didn’t want to. Why did she not believe him now? All the questions she asked him before, why was she changing her mind now? He saw Piya was making more exaggerated notes in her notebook.
A humanoid robot.
Okay now he felt insulting. Come on. He was not some robot that could be programmed on a chip. He was as alive as a dead alive person can be. He had thoughts, feelings, he felt thirsty, he got injured and then healed. His body changed himself just like other living things. He needed to correct her. This was simply not acceptable.
“Piya, stop it. You know what you saw.”
“No Abhay, I don’t know what I saw. I was under lots of heavy medication, remember? I had just been in an accident.”
“No Piya, you healed. I healed you. With my magic. You know that. You saw me. Why don’t you believe me?”
“How can I believe you Abhay? You want to tellme a story of a creature that does not exist in real life.”
“Piya, I exist, I am right here. There was no trick, illusion nothing involved. It was supernatural just as you saw it.”
“Yeah right. I know you very well. You are saying so this moment. Two minutes after I believe you will change. You will laugh saying you fooled me and make me feel stupid. I am not falling in your games again.”
“Piya but you saw me. Okay, those other times when I heard tracker in forest, I predicted earthquake, I tripped over the entire jeep, all those things.”
“Yeah and you explained me. I believe you. You were not paying attention in class, you got lucky with tracker and some”, she looked at him confused and said, “something about physics and forces that tripped the jeep over.”
“The silver. See, silver burns me.”, he closed his palm over her silver S pendant. The skin was burning, he wanted to scream but he held it in. He opened the palm and showed it to Piya.
“tch tch tch. You have allergy of silver why would you do that to yourself? Stupid, Idiot, Moron.”
What the hell. The girl who was hell bent on discovering his identity is now hell bent on not accepting the very identity. What had changed. He couldn’t understand her.
Abhay…
Mom please, just a minute. Please.
“Piya” Abhay turned her to face him, “why are you doing this? I know well that you know and understand everything.”
Piya didn’t respond for a moment or two. Her chest swelled as she took deep breath. “See Abhay, I know I was trying to prove that you are not normal human. And yes, I admit it was kind of fun too, chasing fantasy story like that. But if what I saw last night is true, then – do you understand the repercussion of that on my psyche? If you are – what you are – then where does that leave me? My whole life becomes a lie, Abhay. Everything I know or understand about this world takes a huge paradigm shift. I will lose sight of what is really or not. And all I would think about is what other creatures are there? Who else around me is non-human? I wouldn't be able to trust anyone? Are there Witches? Zombies? Aliens? Parallel Universes? It bends my mind just thinking about all this. So, I have to believe that what I saw last night was nothing more than a trick. It had to be. That is the only logical explanation in the world as I know it.”
This means more chances of her talking to someone about this. And that means exposure for us. Fix it.
This was Chand. It was an order and a hidden warning. Moreover, Piya was right, he thought. If this kind of thoughts continued in her mind, it would break her, probably drive her crazy. And he was of course afraid she might do something reckless trying to find answers. He had to fix this.
Abhay looked in her eyes, getting her to focus in his eyes. “You took your medicines and had a very deep sleep. You had a dream where you saw yourself in trouble. Maybe in fire. In this classroom. You saw me save you because you think you love me. You also saw me mysteriously walk in the fire and then we got away on a flying horse because you love fantasy stories.”
Abhay kissed her forehead, took her notebook and left her alone. He saw Misha and Ruhi arrive to her. She was talking about the crazy dream she had the night before with them. As long as he could, he would try to keep his secret away from Piya. Piya herself had given him permission. In a way. It was best for her to not believe his reality. Safer that way. He figured.
