Knowing you'll be in all my tomorrows, makes my today so wonderful- Anonymous
Jalal stared at his new Malika with absolute pride on his face. The ministers all stood up and saluted their new Malika and soon, the entire court followed suit. Adham however, always brave to the point of stupidity had to question the Shehensha in an open court... 'How is this possible Shehensha?! A Hindu Queen as the Malika of the Mughal Emperor and the Mughal Empire?' The old Jalal would have probably yelled at him for defying him in the Diwaan-E-Khaas but ever since Jodha had entered his life, Jalal realised that he had found a calm nexus within him, an internal tolerance that he now realised was vital in a great ruler. He responded calmly, 'Why Adham? Are all of our subjects Muslim? I looked at this decision not only from a personal standpoint as many of you may think. Normally, a Malika is a title given to the Shehensha's most trusted and prized consort but Begum Jodha is this and a whole lot more! She is wise, graceful, accessible and good-natured. I have just said that we need to practice tolerance for all religions and she will be able to help us reach our Hindu subjects and help us bridge the distances that we have created. Our Malika-E-Hindustan will help us unite as one nation. So you see Adham?! This decision is not just personal, but administrative and political as well! If anyone else has any objection, I demand that they speak now! For I will not tolerate any doubt or any slur on our Malika henceforth! Pray speak...' The Diwaan-E-Khaas was so silent you could not even hear anyone take a breath.
Jodha suddenly felt like tearing up. This was the type of husband she had always dreamed of. Someone who would protect her honour against the entire world, yet the Shehensha had done far more than protect her honour... He had given her his Kingdom, entrusted her with his subjects as a token of his love for her... It was such a huge responsibility what if she was a disappointment? She was raised a princess sure. She understood what it meant to sacrifice for your subjects but she also had no idea what it took to be a Malika! Ruqaiyya would have filled these shoes much better... She had been married to the Shehensha since they were nine years old obviously she was better suited for this task, in fact, she would probably be upset because she probably would have expected the title to go to her! Her chest suddenly felt very heavy.
Jalal could actually feel Jodha's nerves standing next to him. She was like a live wire. He longed to touch her. The physical need to comfort her was so great that he actually had to ball his fists at his side, crush his knuckles and dig his nails into his palm to stop himself. Once no-one in the court raised any objection... Jalal decided to wrap things up... 'The festival of Gangaur will be taking place in a month. I wish to give Malika Jodha a chance to learn and understand the gravity of this position. I want her to take her time and understand these new responsibilities, to learn about the Mughal ways and traditions, therefore, her coronation as Malika-E-Hindustan will be held after the Gangaur festival. I will send a message to her family in Amer of these wonderful tidings. One more thing, I wish to take Malika Jodha to Amer where we will spend time with her family celebrating the festival of Gangaur. To the Mughals who do not know this festival celebrates the marriage of Lord Shiva and the Goddess Gauri. It was also during this festival that Jodha and I had first met last year.' Jodha looked at him in utter shock. Shehensha will celebrate Gangaur with me and my family in Amer? He really has lost it. But the idea of spending time with her family during the festivities made her so happy that even she could not stop from smiling.
Jalal felt like he had never known true happiness before today...It was the first time that she had truly broken out into a smile because of him! It was the first time he had ever made her happy, her happiness was from the bottom of her heart, he could tell. His Ammi had been right, when you love someone; you find happiness in what makes them happy. Their small joys make your world go round. Jodha's joy at the idea of celebrating Gangaur with her family made Jalal realise that his first effort, his first step towards her had been a success. Sure she had not forgiven him yet, who would? He did not expect to be forgiven so easily after all, he had been horrible to her, but now he was determined to make things right, and he had begun his odyssey with a successful first step. As Jalal closed the proceedings and walked out of the Diwaan-E-Khaas with his new Malika by his side... He felt buoyant and reborn.
Ruqaiyya stormed into her chamber. She had always been neat and tidy... A trait that used to annoy Jalal from childhood especially when she'd yell at him for keeping his shoes on her bed... But today, when her heart was in turmoil, she had no other outlet. She began to throw everything around. She hoped that by taking out her anger and her hurt feelings on all these inanimate objects then maybe the pain in her heart would lesson somehow. The sad thing was that with these small things, she could have her way... But when it came to the most important thing in her life... Jalal... Her control seemed to be slipping. She cried... How could he do this to me? She wept. I had dreamed of being his Malika from the day I had first laid eyes on him after our Nikaah. The past 13 years that they had been married she sent a prayer of thanks to Allah every day and night for the glorious man that was her husband. When they were children he had belonged only to her. Then he became a hot-blooded youth and had begun to desire other women. She would die inside but she would let him have his fun. She prayed every night that he would return to her and he always did so she put up with it... She hoped that one day he would realise that he belonged to her and that he loved only her... But now this Jodha! How could Jodha possibly take him away from me? She cried... She doesn't even like him and yet I worship the ground he walks on and he still picks her! She smashed her mirror with her bare hands. Her blood seeped down her arms and somehow, the discomfort was soothing. She had always loved the feeling of her own blood running cold against her skin. It made her feel alive. It had helped her to open herself and pour out all her feelings in a Harem where the walls had ears and she had to bottle herself up. No my love... She wiped her tears... It's not Jalal's fault that he's so irresistible... If all these wretched women try to entice him on a daily basis how could he not falter? No! He only loves her... She convinced herself... They lead him astray... They try to take him away from me! But I will have none of it! She had been up all night trying to learn the spell book but it had been more difficult than she had originally thought. Khwaja Shera had made it look easy. She kicked aside the shards of her broken mirror and bent over underneath her bed. She picked up Jalal's box. She sorted through the blood letters to him and reached for the spell book she kept hidden below. Just touching it made her feel so close to the magic. Her blood seemed to light up and she was drawn to it like a magnet. Soon, Jalal will be drawn to her like that. He'd never be able to resist her charms. But she had to be careful... She remembered what Khwaja Shera had told her... My spell book and I were willing to serve you forever! But I can't give you the spell book Begum Sahiba! That kind of power is intoxicating and I know how determined you are! You could become hasty and rash! We can't do any big spells Begum Sahiba! If it were any other man I would have him kneeling before you at an instant! I could make him yours forever! Such is the extent of my power! But you have fallen in love with the Shehensha-E-Hindustan! We have to play this smart using minor spells ... 'She could not cast a spell on Jalal, not now... Not while she was still inexperienced... She would have to find a practice target to hone her skills... But who? Ruqaiyya wondered... It can't even be Jodha because she's the Malika now and casting a spell on her would be just as dangerous and trying to bewitch Jalal! She was so deep in thought trying to pull herself together that she startled when the Harem Guards announced her love's arrival... 'Ba adab! Ba mulahiza hoshiyar! Shehensha-E-Hind! Baadshah Jalaluddeen Muhammad Harem mein tashreef la rahe hain!' Ruqaiyya hastily placed the spell book and her letters into her box and was able to put it under her bed just in the nick of time...

Oh dil mein mere sulag raha hai, pyaar ka ek angaara,
Aaja mere yaara, yaara aaja aa bhi jaa, dil ne dil se tujhe pukaara.
Tu aa jaaye toh dil ki duniya bas jaayegi ,
Lagta hai meri taqdeer tujhe ek din laayegi,
Woh ek ghadi na jaane,
Woh ek ghadi na jaane pyaar ki kab aayegi,
Aaja mere yaara, yaara aaja aa bhi jaa, dil ne dil se tujhe pukaara.
Dil Ne Dil Se Tujhe Pukara- Jaanasheen
What is wrong with me? He thought as Ruqaiyya deepened the kiss... Then Jodha's doe-like eyes, her innocent smile flashed before his eyes and he broken the kiss abruptly. 'Kya hua Jalal? Aap toh masoom bachche ki tarah ghabra rahe hain... Hum dono aisa pehli baar toh nahin kar rahe hain na?' Ruqaiyya looked hurt. 'Nahin Ruqaiyya it's not that...' Jalal said... 'Hume bohot zaroori kaam hain.. Hume ijazat dijiye...' He got up and walked out of the room as quickly as he could without arising suspicion... Why does it feel like I'm betraying Jodha? He thought... We aren't even actually together! And Ruqaiyya is also my wife... My first wife... My best friend! Why am I suddenly so uncomfortable around her?
Ruqaiyya watched the object of her desire leave and even though she was disappointed and unsatisfied... She was not unhappy. He admitted that he appointed Jodha for political reasons... She thought... And his reasons actually make sense... I'm glad to see he is still my sensible Jalal... That he's not losing his mind over that wretched Jodha! She sat in her now clean room and pondered... Soon Jalal... It's only a matter of time... Then you will never leave me... You will stay here... In my arms... Forever...
