Part 13
Surprised and jealous of her defense of NK, Arnav hit back,
'Oh my my! What a touching defense of you ex lover Khushi. Wonder what he has done to earn this,' he said mockingly.
Khushi finally exploded
'Just shut up. You know nothing about what he has done for me, when I was all alone in life with no one to guide me or show what is the next step forward, he was there for me, when you had moved on with La,' she said.
'That was your choice isn't it? You chose to have NK and not me in you life Khushi,' he said accusingly.
'How easy for you to assume things. Do you even know who was the reason behind all my problems? Strangely it was you and my abundant love for you,' she said.
'Really! How strange. You loved me so much, you left me? You loved me so much you told me you are marrying someone else? You loved me so much you lied to me? Try another one Khushi,' he said sarcastically.
'No I don't have to try anything else. You need not believe me and I don't care what you think. Get out of my way. I am going to make it to the meeting,' she said getting up with a sudden force.
The action made her feel dizzy, reminding her she had not eaten for hours.
As she stumbled, Arnav caught her in time and cradled her to his chest, 'I am not letting you go anywhere, but we will get you some food first,' he said,
Before she said a word, he silenced her with a finger on her lips, 'No. We can argue later. First food. The doctor had told me to feed you. Sorry Khushi, for being such an ogre,' he said and picked up the phone to call room service.
When the food arrived, they ate in silence. Each of them lost in their own thoughts of other times when they had shared food over laughter and teasing.
'You are a hog Khushi. How much you eat for a girl who is this thin. Where does all of it go?' he would ask, holding her slim waist, which fitted into his palm.
'I don't know and don't care. I love food,' she had declared and then added, 'But not more than you'.
He had laughed then telling her ,
'I am glad you did not pick food over me. I wouldn't have known how to compete.'
A smile touched her lips as she remembered those words. How she had loved him. More than every breath in her body. More than herself. More than anything else in the world.
It is true, she thought, that one should never love someone too much. It can be destructive.
Had she been able to refuse him anything, she wouldn't be where she was in life.
After breakfast, Arnav waited for her to speak up.
But she remained silent.
'So Khushi, let's take up from where we left. Why the hell did you leave me. What triggered it?' he asked.
'Do you remember the night of the inter-state fashion awards?" Khushi asked him.
'How is it possible to forget that night Khushi---it has been in my mind all the time I spent away from you,' he said in a low voice.
They had been nominated to participate in the inter-state fashion design competition happening in Nainital. Arnav and Khushi had been unanimously chosen to represent the college.
Accompanied by their professor, they had travelled to their location.
It was a critical award and their college had huge expectations from them.
They worked hard on each round, be it impromptu designing rounds, fabric combo rounds, ethnic, western and casual wear rounds.
It had been 5 days of non stop hard work. Their professor had mentored them in the evenings and prepared them for the next round.
Finally the day of the competition arrived.
Top models from across the country, were supposed to model their clothes.
Both of them were nervous wrecks and they fussed around Melissa, the top model, who was going to showcase their clothes.
She was beautiful, with an hour glass figure.
Being a completely hot blooded male, Arnav had taken up mild harmless flirting with her, completely unaware of Khushi's seething jealousy.
'You look gorgeous in that Melissa,' he had told her and the lady had been pleased no end, to have a young, handsome admirer.
'Thank you. And Arnav, and do you think this is exposing too much of my torso?' she had asked coyly, completely ignoring Khushi.
'Oh no Melissa. You have a beautiful torso. You should flaunt it,' he had said encouragingly.
But it did not end there. All through the day, the mild flirtations had continued from Melissa's end. Arnav had not encouraged her. But to Khushi's utter grief, he had not discouraged her either.
When she took his hand to get off the ramp, he had happily extended his arm.
When she fished for compliments, he had obligingly dished them out.
When she had gently pulled his cheeks, he has smiled warmly at her.
Khushi had watched it, borne it silently and worked along with them to make the event a success. But she felt the pain that came with jealousy rising.
A few minutes before the awards were announced Khushi 's endurance had reached the end, when after the final ramp walk, Melissa walked up and hugged Arnav. To her astonishment, Arnav had not pushed her away, but mildly smiled and hugged her back.
Tears pricked her eyes as she watched the scene.
Unnoticed by Arnav, she had walked away from the scene.
He had been such a jerk that day, he remembered.
He had not intentionally set out to flirt. It had just happened.
Melissa was beautiful. She was India's top most model. It had been a heady feeling to have her flirt with him. He had just been carried away,
A huge mistake on his part. he realized later.
As the awards were announced, he had looked for Khushi everywhere. Their professor had been worried too. He had lied she was unwell.
But where had she gone and why? Back then, being young and a perfect idiot, he had not figured out the extent to which she would have been hurt.
When their names were announced as winners, he desperately tried to look for her. Melissa and the whole world faded away. All he wanted to see was the joy on her face on winning the award.
But she was nowhere to be seen.
He tried calling her multiple times, but her phone was switched off.
He had collected the awards alone on both their behalf.
His professor had left to meet other colleagues over dinner after a final query about Khushi. He had lied she was sleeping in the room.
But he had been mad with worry.
He rushed to her room.
Despite repeated knocking, there was no answer. The lights were also tuned off.
His anxiety increasing by the minute, he had searched everywhere like a man possessed. But he could not find her.
Feeling defeated, he came back to her room and stood outside, wondering what to do next. It was then he saw a faint light inside the room.
She was in there!
He had banged the door with full vigor.
'I know you are in there Khushi. So, open up,' he had said as loudly as he could, trying to be discreet and not draw attention.
Silence.
'Khushi I am have been going crazy. Can you please let me in and let know if you are fine?'
Silence
'Khushi we won the award. I want to share it with you,' he had appealed.
Silence
'Khushi, if you don't open the door I am going to call security and tell them something has happened. I hope you don't want to create a scene'.
Finally the door had opened, though the room was still dark.
He rushed in, locking the door behind.
'Are you crazy Khushi. I have gone mad with worry. What the hell is wrong with you?' he had asked, switching on the lights.
Being a 21 year old and quite unused to female sentiments he had behaved as if he had been wronged.
But when he had seen her tear streaked, puffed up face, he realized something was wrong, his dumb brain had still not connected the dots.
'Khushi, what the hell is wrong baby,' he had tried to take her in his arms.
'Don't touch me,' she had said, fiercely pushing him away.
'Are you crazy? What the hell is wrong with you? We just won the most coveted award in India. And here you are crying in the room. Melissa was so happy with our designs. She said will go far. We are the best. In fact, she asked me to meet her when I go to Mumbai, so that she can introduce me to her Fashion Designer friends,' he said proudly.
That was it. She lunged forward and pushed him towards the door, 'Go then. Just go. Go to Melissa. Or Teressa. Or any damn sa. Why the hell are you here. In fact, you can go right now and join your dear Melissa for a drink and anything afterwards. You don't need to come and pacify your old friend and once girlfriend, Khushi Kumari Gupta. Melissa is any day a better option,' she had spit venom.
To say Arnav was stunned was an understatement. So, that was it. His mild flirting had hurt her. Well, she had not been wrong. But he hadn't understood it would hurt her that much.
'Khushi are you crazy. You think I am interested in Melissa? Is that all you think of me?' he asked.
'Yes. I think you are interested in Melissa. The innocent, virginal Khushi Kumari Gupta does not have the charms of the Melissas of this world.
Why would you want me or even look at me when she is blatantly interested in you?
She has a wonderful torso.
Wonderful body.
Beautiful face.
Awesome figure---
All your words not mine.
What am I?
I was your hanger once.
I have no experience other than the kisses I have shared with you.
I have nothing except my love to give you.
But I guess love is not enough,' she had said breaking down again.
Arnav had been flabbergasted. What the hell. Was she mad? He had been fighting his desire for her for so many days, not wanting to do anything which would shock her.
He knew she had a conservative upbringing.
She did not believe in pre marital sex.
To top it all, she was extremely God fearing. Even when he had kissed her intimately in the Design lab she had later told him, 'Devi Maiya was angry with me. That is why she punished me by making you date La.'
He had laughed at her childishness sometimes.
When he had touched her waist and went a little below her neck for the first time, she had fasted the whole of next day saying 'It is wrong Arnav. God won't approve of this.'
But he had reassured her, all was fine if there is love.
He found it alternately cute and irritating. But he had respected her sentiments and never crossed the lines.
But today, he was enraged at her assumptions about his desire for her and her own physical charms.
Tonight, he had to teach her a few lessons about his own desire for her and her own charms as a woman..
