DU honours its big, bright star
Sonia Sarkar
[ 5 Nov, 2006 0035hrs ISTTIMES NEWS NETWORK ]

NEW DELHI: They were all there — hysterical fans, celebrities, flashbulbs, and above all, the Big B. Just that the venue was not a movie red carpet, but a convention hall at Delhi University.

The hall was bursting at the seams on Saturday morning, as superstar Amitabh Bachchan walked in, attired in a red robe, and the crowds cheered as the university conferred a honorary doctorate on its big, bright star.

Such was the rush for an "exclusive" picture that DU registrar A K Dubey requested the lensmen to leave the venue. Soon after, there was another loud cheer from the back rows, as Bachchan junior made his entry. Abhishek — sporting a grey suit, blue tie and his much-talked about hair band — was a surprise guest at the 700-seat Old Vice Regal Lodge.

And he surely stole the thunder at the convocation. He had specially flown down from Mumbai for the ceremony. Other members of Bachchan's family — Jaya Bachchan, Shweta and Nikhil Nanda — and politician friend Amar Singh were also present.

The excitement over the senior and junior B took some time to subside, and the ceremony began 10 minutes behind schedule.

Perhaps observing the star-struck audience, principal science advisor to the Prime Minister, C N R Rao, who was also honoured, said he was proud to be a part of the "less visible part of the society." He added: "I had a talk with the PM that we should make sure that all creative efforts in science are also recognised."

The others who were also honoured at the special convocation included chief minister Sheila Dikshit and cartoonist R K Laxman.

Conveying his thanks to the university, Laxman said: "I never thought that I will be honoured."

The young crowd from Miranda House cheered for their former student, Dikshit, as she rose to receive the degree. "It is an honour that goes to the will of the people of Delhi who brought me here," she said.

There were some angry protests by ABVP activists outside the hall however, as they shouted slogans against the decision to honour Dikshit.

The audience was all ears when finally Amitabh pulled out his reading glasses to read out a 15-minute speech. He opened his remarks by addressing the "cheering crowd of Kirori Mal College (his alma mater)".

He recalled his hours spent at the coffee house, and outside Miranda House — not to forget his stint at KMC's drama society, Players.

"I am thankful to the tall and encouraging Frank Thakur Das, who gave me an opportunity to play an important role in the play Winterset," he said.

Being the first non-Stephenian to stage a play at Miranda House, Big B also recalled his role as Zeus in Benn Wlevy's The Rape of the Belt.

"This is a proud moment not only for me, but for the entire film fraternity," said the Big B.

After the convocation, the father and son signed a few autographs, before leaving in a black BMW. Said an university official, "Bachchan got a little tense after noting the huge crowd and left a little early.

The other guests spend some more time with us." Said Asish Deep Verma, who was one of the lucky few to get an autograph: "It was a dream come true for me to see Bachchan. I chose KMC over Hindu and St Stephen's, as I wanted to be a part of the institution Bachchan studied in."

The hostelites who now share room no 65 at KMC where the Big B stayed in 1958-61 claimed they get "some positive energies in the room".

Okie...lemme start answering the DOTW😊

  • What excites you most about 'Baabul'?

No point of asking...first and foremost===BIG B!!!😳...Well....I guess everything....I will put it in pts😆:

    Big B and Hemaji couple again after Baghban...they make a fabulous jodii...I am waitin to see 'em together again!!!😳...my fav jodi like Big B-Rekha N Big B-Jaya B😳{n Big B -Me!!!😆}
Big B-Rani again...man...dun they surely give u a blazt together oinscreen...loved them in Black n BnB...they are the best actor and actress...so am expecting to see some great acting too😳
The story=It seems fabulous...family drama...but one with a very strong social message which will surely appeal to all and make one think.
The music and the rest of the cast....I loved the music...its great....👏👏👏...n salman and John looking great!!!
  1. After seeing so many st**id films this year {exception-LRMB n RDB}, I need a break and Am sure this film too will be a great one!!!👏
  • What are your expectations from the movie?

I confess that I have high expectations...coz after such an emotional and great film like Baghban which truly made me cry and think...One's expectations normally wud peak up....But I am confident that it will be equally good...👏

  • What is your take on the storyline?

It is fabulous...It is a widely prevalent isue in Indian Society and this film questions our some such problems...I am sure it will leave an imapct....It questions the injustice that is done to a widow... It is truly one which can be viewed with ur family and loved by all!!!

  • Do you think 'Baabul' will hit the gold and get both critical and popular acclaim like 'Baghban'?

I hope so...I think it will...I already said Baghban is such a fabulous film...though Baabul too is a family drama...its theme is different...I am sure it will be a critically and popularly acclaimed one...and why not...👏👏👏IT HAS THE GOD OF ACTING IN IT!!!👏 Anyways...the theme can be a widely accepted one and so it will surely be a success!!!

  • Describe your expectations from the film in ONE WORD/PHRASE{ I know this is wacko😳...its just for fun!!!😃}

Salman teases Abhishek?
by Debasis Jana

It's a known fact that Salman Khan is still a brat at 40. Recently at 'Baabul' audio release party, where he walked ramp and reportedly teased Abhishek is a proof. For everyone to see, he gestured a salaam towards the first row of guests each time he was on ramp. At first, people thought it was for Dilip Kumar, who was sitting upfront. But he continued even when Dilip Kumar was on stage and we realized it was for Abhishek Bachchan, who was sitting next to the thespian. And that's not without reason, for the Salaam number from 'Umrao Jaan', which stars Abhishek and Aishwarya Rai, Khan's ex. So Khan's gesturing was just to tease Abhishek, who took it rather sportingly.

"I never advise Abhishek," Big B!
by Debasis Jana

"I never advise him," is what Amitabh Bachchan says on his son Abhishek. At a time when his son was struggling with flops, he was worried whether it would be difficult for his son to get out of the shadow of Amitabh Bachchan. But Abhishek has also proved his versatility with hits like 'Dhoom', 'Bunty Aur Babli', 'Sarkar', 'Dus' and 'Bluffmaster'. He shared screenspace with his son in 'Bunty Aur Babli', 'Sarkar' and 'Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna', but never praised him sky high. "It's one helluva a job keeping up with him," he says when asked about his dance numbers with Abhishek in 'Bunty Aur Babli' and KANK

Abhishek Bachchan

'I don't know what it (sexy) means'

He was just back from London in Mumbai to be with his father, and now Abhishek leaves for Chennai to shoot for Mani Ratnam. But not before getting discernibly embarrassed by yet another appellation.

Just the other day he was selected Asia's sexiest man, and now he's become a gay icon! Abhishek is flustered. "I don't know how to react to this. Any kind of recognition is a blessing. I don't believe in discriminating against anyone. As long as any community loves me for doing what I do onscreen, what more can I ask for? Of course, I'm flattered and I feel hugely complimented. It's not everyday that one gets singled out by a very important and sensitive community. Of course, I enjoy the thought of being a gay icon…though let me tell you, I don't think I deserve it."

When told that he's been chosen because of his clean-cut family image Abhishek responds, "It's not as though I put on any image for effect. That's the way I am. Family is the most important thing in my life. I don't have to make an effort to be a family man. I've been brought up to believe in certain values."

First sexy, now gay icon? "I don't take these appellations seriously. My main job is to be an actor. And all these wonderful appellations come from that job. If I wasn't an actor I'd be neither considered sexy nor a gay icon. I concentrate on my job as an actor. The rest I treat as bonuses given to me for doing my job seriously. My responsibility is towards my audience and entertaining them. 'Sexy' and 'gay icon' are terms of affection that are here today, will be gone tomorrow. I value them as long as they're mine." Abhishek is mature enough to see that conducting himself decorously is not a responsibility, it comes with the territory of being a Bachchan. "And why just a Bachchan? Every actor must be conscious of his public image. I'm very particular about my behaviour, and would've been so even if I wasn't a Bachchan."

Do you like being called sexy? "I don't know what it means." Maybe it means people want to have sex with him? Abhishek laughs in embarrassment. "I don't think so. I really don't know what being sexy is."
