"Rishabh, do you ever plan to hold my hand in public?", a petite girl with hair fresh out of rollers questioned her aloof boyfriend.
"If that is what you want", he answered to his glaring other half.
"Tell me, why are you certain of everything but what you want out of this relationship?"
"I don't know", he offered her a confused expression.
She bought into it. The argument was self defeating because Rishabh would never confirm or deny the accusations.
"I am sorry dude, she is hard to deal with", a voice projected from behind the bookshelf.
"Tell me about it", he turned around to put a face to the voice.
"Madhubala, what a surprise. Are you here to see Mukund?"
"Deepali, if you are not dating this fine gentleman, may I jump at opportunity?"
He was not expecting the flirtatious wink from Madhubala.
"You have a boyfriend Madhu. Where are the manners?" Deepali tugged her boyfriend in closer as if afraid he would accept the offer.
"I am friends with Mukund. Mukund Dixit, right?"
He extended a hand for greeting. She looked to Deepali for approval.
"You think you are the only one allowed to joke around here? I am perfectly secure and I believe the two of you".
Madhu was not convinced but, there was not enough evidence against Deepali's words either. The handshake happened quickly, almost like a brush of flesh followed by an awkward smile.
"Madhu, would you like to join us on a double date?"
That confirmed all of Madhu's suspicions. She had to hold back on her humour for the sake of this friendship. Deepali was not taking too well to the usual taunts. Of course, her way of showing the discomfort was subtle yet, torturous. Both Rishabh and Madhu shared their dislike for chain restaurant food and that was the venue for their dinner.
"The authenticity is gone, you know?" Rishabh nibbled on his deep fried chicken leg.
"I know", Madhu raised her pitch to sound engaged. "Why are we eating at KFC's when there is real meat served next door. Atleast we know where that came from".
"I have heard the Colonel's recipe is kept in a secret vault in Kentucky". Rishabh used the chicken leg as flash light retelling a spooky halloween story.
"Get over your self Rishabh. We live in New Delhi for crying out loud. Doesn't get any mainstream than this".
"That is why, I am moving to Mumbai, my friends. Cheerio to the assembly line living".
"You are moving to Mumbai? I am moving to Mumbai. We could move together".
Rishabh's blur of words raised several eyebrows.
"Not move in together. Move together, there is a difference".
"Are you trying to steal my girlfriend?" Mukund put his foot down. But, Madhu was adamant about supporting Rishabh.
"Don't you worry Mukund. The only man who I will cheat on you with is Jack Daniels".
She lightened the mood just enough for everyone to ignore the elephant in the room.
Rishabh mouthed a thank you to his savior.
