CHAPTER 57:

He kept checking the rear view mirror every now and then to ensure that she was fine, wondering how he was going to explain all this to her. A few hours of silent driving later, darkness was drifting in. Field after field was all there was to see. Small huts used by the farmers were the only distraction from the never ending sea of green. Suddenly, a soft drizzle had begun.

Feeling bored, he looked longingly at Geet, wanting to hear her 'bak bak' which now felt like music to his ears. It had been so long since he had heard her go blah blah over anything, and he decidedly missed it, he thought poignantly.

His glance fell on the radio in the jeep and he remembered all of Geet's taunts over his refusal to repair the one in his car. Her pouting features, her sulking with her phone, refusing to talk to him, it all came back to him.

The last time they had traveled the same journey, he had been a cordoned off heartless man, hiding behind huge walls to save himself from emotions. And look at him today, trying his best to break down the ones he had created around her.

He turned on the radio, very softly, so as not to disturb her.

A slow number was playing, he couldn't recognize it as he was not into music, but the words and the soft music seeped into his soul.

He looked at his 'Sleeping Beauty' in the back. He could spend his whole life just looking at her and thanking providence for sending this angel into his life.

The singer in his soothing melodious voice caught his attention and the words caused him to smirk at his condition. He didn't know why and how it had happened, but it had. And now it was well nigh impossible to even think of his life without her.

Now the issue would be to convince Geet to give him another chance. As upset as she was, he would do anything to win her over. He would fill her life with so much happiness, not even a flicker of sadness would be allowed to enter her vicinity.

His own words echoed in his ears. He had tried to tell her what he felt, but looks like she wasn't in a state to believe him.

He had his whole family with him. But that black chasm in his chest which had been in place of a heart had only been filled by Geet and her love.

Just one day, she had not been by his side and his whole world had seemed meaningless. He could not even begin to imagine how lonely life would have become without her.

And he knew, her life would be the same without him. Whether she accepted it or not, she needed him as deeply as he needed her.

He had been an empty shell, a soulless hollow being.

She had blazed into his life to become his heart, his soul. His everything.

Geet.

Everything that is worthwhile for me is her. And he knew if she ever left him, she would take away the last reason to even breathe.

He looked at her lovingly, and as if she could feel his desirous gaze on her, she blushed and burrowed deeper into the shawl, hiding herself from his intense passionate eyes, leaving him disgruntled like a child whose candy had been snatched away.

He stopped at the side, unable to bare even that distance with her and leisurely moved away the offending piece of clothe barring his vision.

A smile lit up her face taking his breath away.

He pressed two fingers to his lips and then touched them to her petal soft ones.

Just as the song came to an end, he switched off the radio.

The car seemed to slow down and slowly sputtered out. The engine must have overheated.

He noticed the signs on the dashboard. Darn! This was not good. Geet seemed to be stirring in her sleep. He pulled the car to the side off the road.

Between the fields he noticed a small shack. Before it got really cold, he figured he could bring Geet to some shelter. The nights in Punjab could get very cold and the last thing Geet needed was to catch cold. He picked her up gently and carried her to the shack.

There were piles of hay and he settled her on that. Using her shawl, he covered her. He scanned the contents of the shack and found a lamp which he lit.

Bolting the door, he lay down on the hay near her.
