Chapter 38
The Handa ladies were waiting outside the living room. They were struggling to hear the conversation happening behind the closed doors. They suddenly saw the door open and a smug Maan leave the room. He saw their faces looking at him in anticipation. "She is ruinedâŚdon't worry, she will never be able to interfere in our lives again" Maan said to no-one in particular walking towards the staircase.
He stopped when he heard Rano say "What about Geet?"
Maan turned around and walked towards Rano. He held her hands gently and said "I will find her. This is Maan Singh Khurana's promise to you. And Maan Singh Khurana, never breaks a promise"
Thinking for a moment, Maan looked at Rajji, Rano and Taiyji, and said "You all know Geet very well. Do you have any idea where she would go? Is there some relative somewhere or some friend?"
"Delhi" Rajji answered immediately. "Jiju, didi would definitely go to Delhi."
"Delhi?" Maan asked perplexed. "Why Delhi?"
"Jiju, she studied interior design for 2 years there" Rajji replied.
This piece of information surprised Maan, but on reflection it fit in with her manner and attitude. Geet had never given him the impression that she was a backward village girl.
"Do you know any of her friends or where in Delhi she would stay?" Maan asked
"No Jiju. Geet didi kept her life in Delhi quite separate from here. Actually Brij Veerji forbade her to talk about it. He didn't want any of us getting influenced by city ideas. He said that our village life was the best. The only reason Geet didi managed to attend college in Delhi was because our Daadi had taken a promise from Daarji before she died to make sure that didi and I, were educated until we turned 21."
"DelhiâŚwell it narrows my search a bit" Maan said trying to be positive while talking to the 3 anxious ladies.
"Mummyji, where did Geet study in Delhi?" Maan asked after some thought. "Maybe I could find some information from there"
"The Technical Institute" Rano replied.
Maan had heard of this school and knew a few people who taught there. He would see if any of them knew anything about Geet.
"Oh, Jiju, I do remember one name." Maan turned to Rajji and said "Who?"
"She used to talk about a girl called Pinky, but I don't know anything else, sorry" Rajji said apologetically.
"That's okay Rajji. If you do remember anything else, call me okay?" Maan replied
Turning to Rano, Maan said "Mummyji, I will need to leave for Delhi today. I promised Daadi that I would return today. Once I reach there I will keep you informed of my progress in finding Geet. In the meantime if she calls you, try to get her to tell you where she has gone and let me know. Don't worry, I am sure she is safe and well. "
"Okay MaanjiâŚI know you will do the best for our Geet" she said hugging him tightly. "Geet is very lucky to have someone like you as a life partner"
Maan nodded and headed up to Geet's room to collect his bags.
As Maan left Handa Haveli, he was met by munshi who handed him a new phone. "Wo SIrji, they weren't able to repair your other phoneâŚthere were too many pieces." Although curious as to how the phone came to be in that state, munshi felt it best not to ask.
Maan thanked munshi and instructed him to keep an eye on the Handas especially Brij and to inform him, if anything looked suspicious. Now that he had come up against Brij in defending Geet, Brij may make trouble for him with the union leader. He just needed to be prepared.
Maan decided to drive himself back to Delhi in his jeep, rather than using his driver. It gave him a chance to thinkâŚalone.

Geet arrived at Pinky's house exhausted. Due to the loss of her beloved pastry, Pinky had insisted that they go in search of another. As the particular pastry was very popular, all the local shops had sold out, which required them to venture around Delhi until they got Pinky her pastry.
"Sach mein, Pinky, you are the limit. I don't know how Adi puts up with you...or even me, for that matter. For one pastry, you made us traipse through Delhi for the last 2 hours...I hope you get indigestion!" Geet said jokingly.
"Haaawww, Geet. I thought you were my friend. It was not my fault, that you didn't see my bechara pastry. You know, if you had been more careful in the first place, then we would not have had to go in search of another pastry" Pinky replied.
"Accha meri Maa" Geet said bowing her head to Pinky. "You win...I lose, as always. Now can we at least go inside and rest?"
"Chal. Dad will be waiting for you. You know he has missed you so much these past few weeks" Pinky said opening the door and pulling Geet inside.
As they went inside, Adi stopped and said "Geet, Pinky I will leave you here. I will see you both bright and early on Monday morning, Ok?"
"Bhai, you will not come in?" Geet asked
"No, Geet. I don't think Pinky's Dad likes me" Adi confessed
"Bhai, that can't be true" Geet said somewhat shocked. How could anyone not like Adi Bhai she wondered.
"He thinks I make fun of him...he stutters too you know" Adi said
"Oh, I get it...but you do not stutter with us" Geet replied somewhat confused.
"I know. I am confortable with you guys. I do stutter Geet, but only when I am nervous." Adi continued.
"And only 2 people make Adi nervous Geet...my Dad and MK!" Pinky interjected.
"Okay, goodnight then Bhai. Don't worry, I will work on uncle for you." she said winking at him and then Pinky who blushed. "But I don't think I can I can do anything for you with regards to MK" she said a laughingly.
