What does it take for a small-town boy with ordinary looks to develop a drive that pits him successfully against the country's biggest stars? Rajeev Khandelwal fought with his family and left Jaipur to wander on the streets of Mumbai to follow his dream of becoming an actor. He was not sure of his friends, finances, or fate. but courage, confidence and persistence eventually paid off. "I want to be an actor first, then a star..." He gets into high gear about fitness, controversies and optimism.
On chasing your dreamsIf you have one you've been working on, but haven't seen the results you wished for, let people who inspire you keep going. I had my ideal future chalked out in my head when even my family didn't approve of it. But I knew that perhaps my time might just come a bit later, but it definitely will. It's important to get a tenuous grasp of your own reality and start working right away. It's never too late to do what you love and have your big breakthrough success.
On making the first moveIt takes a lot of courage to follow your true calling, especially if you have no friends or finances. Modesty alone is not enough always. You have to be realistic too. I came from Jaipur to Delhi hunting for acting assignments. But I got nowhere. I was financially and emotionally drained. But it was a learning experience. One thing that should be a constant priority is recognition, of either your work or you. Life is like a party: don't just attend one, be a part of it!
On fitnessFitness is not just a lifestyle choice. It's a business proposition, too. Injuries aren't a threat just in sports. They're very real for entertainers as well, and something that performers work hard to avoid. I don't stick to a particular regime. Whether it's on the set or off it, leading an active and a disciplined life helps a great deal. Being fit also helps manage your time better. Small wonder that I am always the first one to reach the sets!
On building downtimeIt helps to be proactive about scheduling. When I plan my week, I make it a point to schedule time with my family and friends, and engage in activities that help me recharge. I am very passionate about horses. Riding horses is therapeutic—to the body as well the mind. It has both cardiovascular and muscle conditioning benefits. At the same time, there is a real sense of exhilaration and freedom when you ride.
On direction in lifeI don't need a director for that (laughs). You can't multitask all the time. There's a reason why concentration is a virtue. I started with the small screen to take a plunge into the bigger one. That's because I want to be an actor first, then a star. It's important to stay grounded, work hard, enjoy life and be grateful. Make the right connections, and life will be simpler.
On battling perceptionsI am not opinionated. Some people say I am high-handed, but those who know me, think otherwise. I hosted a controversial show such as Sach Ka Saamna, but it was a great experience for me. It takes a lot of courage to come out with the truth. I care about my work and the people I work with. If the spot boys feel I'm not a good human being, then it'd be time for me to go for a reality check. Else, I don't care what's written about me.
On self-esteemYou don't have to be rich, successful or goodlooking to fall in love with yourself. You just have to be proud of your existence. The only tip that I can offer is that think positive even in the most negative conditions.
