Amitabh was rejected for Gabbar"s role!

Amitabh Bachchan might have landed himself his biggest dream role that of playing the infamous Gabbar Singh, but the irony is that he was once rejected for the same role. He wanted to play Gabbar Singh in the original, but Ramesh Sippy rejected it and instead offered him Jai's role. And now at the age of 64, history repeats itself and Amitabh is getting to play Gabbar. "I nurtured this desire and I am happy that at 64 my wish is getting fulfilled," is what he says. Going by his attire for Gabbar, he could well be the hottest villain we have ever seen on the silver screen. Must be the best birthday gift Ramu gave him!

MUMBAI: Payal Rohatgi, who has acted in films like Yeh Kya Ho Raha Hai, Plan, Rakht, Police Force, 36 China Town and Corporate, has been signed by Crescendo Promotions and Management.

With this, Rohatgi will be first seen in an ad film with Amitabh Bachchan.

Crescendo Promotions and Management is an associate concern of Crescendo Music Pvt. Ltd. and headed by Suresh Thomas.

Her upcoming film is Mukta Arts' Apna Sapna Money Money, which is directed by Sangeet Shivan. Rohatgi has also signed up with Percept Communication for 'The ONE Concert' in support of AIDS awareness.

Bollywood superstar AMITABH BACHCHAN's latest land purchase in Barabanki, India, has prompted a petition from locals.
Residents from the Barabanki district filed a public lawsuit in the llahabad High Court on Tuesday (10OCT06) claiming the BLACK star had concealed his identity when buying 20,000 square metres (215,278 square feet) of government land.
Petitioner SATYA NARAIN SHUKLA has urged the court to examine the "wilful concealment and misrepresentation of facts" by the actor.
Shukla says, "In an obvious bid to avoid identification, Bachchan has mentioned his name as just Amitabh and has dropped Bachchan even from his father's name." JUDGE JAGDISH BHALLA has scheduled a hearing for 16 October (06).

New Delhi, Oct 14 (IANS) Many see Amitabh Bachchan as a materialistic and overexposed actor who is not ready to sit on his laurels but works relentlessly to build a larger-than-life media image never seen or heard before in Bollywood.

The actor, who rules both the small and the silver screens, has entrenched himself so deeply in the endorsement arena that he is giving the King Khans a run for their money.

According to media reports, Amitabh's take home last year was around Rs.190 million ($4 million), which is far more than mega star Shah Rukh Khan's who took home Rs.130 million (nearly $3 million). Khan's earnings include his endorsement deals for Pepsi, Hyundai Santro and Lux.

What really sets Amitabh apart from other ageing big stars is while most have faded into oblivion or been reduced to doing father or uncle roles, Big B rules the roost even at 64.

Thirty-seven years ago a young man with an unusual name like Amitabh Bachchan was looking out for a break as an actor. He found it a distant dream till Tinnu Anand decided to opt out as an actor as one of the seven Hindustanis in Saat Hindustani, a film being planned by K.A. Abbas. The filmmaker, who was upset with Tinnu who was also his assistant and the son of his best friend, Inder Raj Anand, asked Tinnu to find a replacement for him immediately as he had to shoot within the next few days. Tinnu luckily had a "Jaadu Ki Pudiya" in the purse. He had a photograph of a young man given to him by a girlfriend from Delhi who wanted him to show the photograph to some of his filmmaker friends. Abbas found something very striking about the face in the photograph. He asked Tinnu to send for him without any delay. The young man was working as a junior executive in Calcutta. Tinnu called him and he rushed to Bombay with his brother, Ajitabh. The two brothers met Abbas. He told Amitabh all about his role and bluntly said he would pay him a sum of Rs. 5,000/ - only for the entire film and that he would have to give him a month to shoot the film. He gave him twenty-four hours to let him know about his decision. Amitabh returned the next day and agreed to all his terms and conditions. His test was still not over. Abbas asked Amitabh whether he was related to Dr. Harivanshrai Bachchan. He said he was his son. Abbas instantly picked up the phone and called Dr. Bachchan and asked him if he had given his son permission to work in films. Dr. Bachchan said if he (Abbas) was making the film with him he had no objection. It was only then that Abbas signed him.

Amitabh met another young actor, Anwar Ali, the brother of the well-known comedian Mehmood who gave him a place to stay in his bungalow. Mehmood took a great liking for him and decided to help him in whatever way.
