And all those Kids, all of us, who miss their Moms, just can't find the right words to tell them that we in fact do miss them and love them very much. Listen to the song everyone.
Maa
Main Kabhi Batlata Nahin
Par Andhere Se Darta Hoon Main Maa
He stood there, numb, watching- as they lifted her into the white Ambulance. The sirens blaring. The red light flashing. And he couldn't move. Still. She had told him, again and again and again!
"Aarav! Aise mat kijiye, Aarav! Humne kaha na aapse? Aapke Dad kaam me the! Aar-AARAV!"
The scream, followed by the jerk of her hand had saved his life. But the Car that had been meant to hit him, had hit her.
He looked up, as someone held his hand, and kept looking at the Nurse, as she led him to the Ambulance. They had worked out that he was her son. Why hadn't he?
Yun To Main,Dikhlata Nahin
Teri Parwaah Karta Hoon Main Maa
He watched, as the various people in the Back of the Van tried to mop up the blood that coated her. Her eyes were closed, those lively eyes- that danced with more mischief than he could ever think of getting up to. Her face was pale, her mouth- for once- closed. And he wished she would talk. Tell him a story about her childhood. About how she had managed to irk Bua Nani again. He wished he had never wished that she would stop talking. The loss of her chatter left a hollow in him. Dark, dark hollow.
He hated darkness. Like her. But he never let it show- unlike her. But she knew. She had held his hand tight, that night when the electricity had been out. When the whole house had been plunged into darkness. And she had smiled at him when the Lights had come back on- and he had only rolled his eyes at her.
When his Dad had asked him if he was okay, if he was afraid of the darkness, she had told his Dad that Aarav was strong. She had told the family that Aarav had kept her company, helped her keep her fears away, when she knew- she knew- that it had been the other way round. She had smiled that secret smile at him again- and he had rolled his eyes again. She had figured out he was her son. Why hadn't he?
Tujhe Sab Hain Pata, Hain Na Maa
Tujhe Sab Hain Pata, Meri Maa
He had hated her for being Dad's first priority. Even when he hadn't known that they were going to be his Family. And he had always tried to keep her at an arm's distance. His Dad fulfilled every wish he had. But her? No, she made him work for it. She made him earn whatever he wanted. He had to show respect, he had to be regular in his studies, he had to behave properly- only then would he get what he wanted.
But, she always did give him whatever he wanted.
And she knew how to make him happy. She had known how to make him forget his anger. He had realized later, much later, that the stunt she had pulled with that small plant in his Dad's garden had been meant as a distraction for him. He had overheard Badi Nani and Anjali Bua talking.
"Maa hai. Woh unhe nahi samjhengi toh aur kaun samjhega?"
They had known that he was her son. Why hadn't he?
Bheed Mein Yun Na Chodo Mujhe
Ghar Laut Ke Bhi Aa Naa Paoon Maa
"Aarav?" He looked up, and there he was. His Dad. A lost expression on his face, as he watched them wheel her out of the Ambulance. Running with her, away from them- and into the hospital. His Dad looked at him, and they followed. As fast as their feet could carry them.
They watched her as they wheeled her in, he saw his Dad reach out, but get held back as the Doctor- the one with an impassive face- told them that they couldn't come in with her. He saw his Dad flinch, as the doors closed with a low thud, Tears flowing down his cheeks undeterred- and Aarav closed his eyes.
Bhej Na Itna Door Mujkko Tu
Yaad Bhi Tujhko Aa Naa Paoon Maa
Kya Itna Bura Hoon Main Maa
Kya Itna Bura Meri Maa
They had been sitting outside for what seemed like hours- days, in fact- when the Doctor finally came out. The whole family had joined them outside the Hospital room during this time, NK chachu pacing the corridor agitatedly- Aarav suspected that she was almost as important to NK chachu as she was to his Dad. Anjali Bua, Badi Nani and Bua Nani had been chanting prayers all this while, while Amma Nani talked to Aakash Chachu and Payal Chachi on the phone, her voice choked as she reassured them that everything would be fine.
"...Stabilized... observation...24 hours... respond... important..." disjointed words from the conversation the Doctor, his Dad and NK chachu seemed to be having reached his ears, as he walked to the glass window and peered inside.
He beseeched her- Open your eyes... Please- his nose pressed against the glass as his tears finally started to flow. She didn't listen... why wouldn't she listen? Why was she still sleeping? Didn't she hate all those needles and tubes they had attached to her? She hated being held down in one place, he knew, then why was she so still? Move, damn it! But she wouldn't. The stubborn woman that she was. She would make him earn this too, wouldn't she? She would teach him a lesson through this too.
He sighed, closing his eyes against the tears that continued to flow. Well, if she was stubborn then so was he. He would make her move- he would make her open her eyes. After all, he was her son.
Jab Bhi Kabhi Papa Mujhe
Jo Zor Se Jhoola Jhulate Hain Maa
Meri Nazar Dhoondhe Tujhe
Sochu Yahi Tu Aa Ke Thaamegi Maa
"Ghar jaao Aarav." His Dad whispered at him, as he refused to move from his place at her feet. Aarav looked up to find the whole family watching him from the doorway. He looked back at his Dad, and shook his head.
"I'm staying with her."
"I'm not asking you, Aarav. I'm telling you. Ghar jao. Abhi." This was the first time his Dad was angry at him. Usually it was her who bore the brunt of all that anger flashing through those eyes. For a second, he was scared. How did she do it? How did she look into those menacing, angry, scary eyes and still stubbornly hold on? He shook his head again.
"I'm staying with her."
"Aarav!" His Dad was shouting at him now. Aarav flinched, but he refused to leave her alone like this. He was her son, why didn't his Dad understand that? Aarav got up and walked to the chair that was standing just beside her bed. He sat down in it, and grasped her pale hand in his own small one. "I said I am staying with her." He said again.
His Dad sighed then, in defeat- and shook his head at the family. "Fine. Let him stay." The family walked out, promising to be back first thing tomorrow morning. And making them promise that they would call them at the first news. "Like Mother, Like Son." He heard his Dad mutter, and he grasped her hand tighter.
Unse Main Yeh Kehta Nahin
Par Main Seham Jaata Hoon Maa
Chehre Pe Aana Deta Nahin
Dil Hi Dil Mein Ghabraata Hoon Maa
Tujhe Sab Hai Pata Hai Naa Maa
Tujhe Sab Hai Pata Meri Maa
He looked at her, his eyes tracing the stubbornly sleeping features. He remembered the time when his Dad had been teaching him how to swim. They were in the pool, and she had been standing with the towels and their clothes outside, watching them. His Dad had then gently withdrawn the hands that had been holding him up in the water, urging him to try and keep himself afloat without his help, and panicked, his eyes had found hers.
Her eyes had widened, almost comically, as she saw what his Dad was doing. "Arnavji!" she had shrieked. "Aap unhe aise chodiye mat! Bacche hai woh! Doob gaye toh?" His Dad had rolled his eyes, and tried to tell her this was how he would learn. He had said it was the only way. But she had fought with his Dad- and finally, Dad had relented and held him- held him till he was sure he could swim by himself.
And when he had shown them, that he could- her clapping and cheering had been the loudest- as again, his Dad smiled indulgently- and rolled his eyes at Aarav, winking at him as he shook his head. "Tumhari Maa bhi nah..."
Dad had known she was his Mother then- that he was her Son. And now, she had finally made him realize- no, accept- that he was her Son, and she was his Mother.
"Maa." He whispered, testing the word on his tongue- feeling it- as his hands tightened around hers. "Please, Maa."
He didn't realize when he kept his head down beside her, and went to sleep- still holding onto her. Holding onto his Maa.
Main Kabhi Batlata Nahin
Par Andhere Se Darta Hoon Main Maa
He woke up to someone caressing his hair lightly. His hands were clutching white sheets and his eyes felt swollen. Wha-? And then he remembered. The Accident. Her. Maa.
"Aarav? Aarav, beta?"
She was... she was talking! She was awake! He jerked up, His hands going to clutch at hers, which was still in his hair. She was sitting up, Leaning against her bed- stubborn woman, must have made his Dad let her up.
"M-Maa?" He asked her, his voice was hoarse, but he didn't care- because her pale tired face had just lit up with the world's most precious smile.
Yun To Main, Dikhlata Nahin
Teri Parwaah Karta Hoon Main Maa
And he flung himself at her, as she hugged him back, just as tightly. Shushing him, as he mumbled apologies into her neck, nuzzling into her neck as he tried not to crush her fragile form, but not able to just let her go.
"I'm... I'm sorry. I'm sorry Maa!" he cried, over and over again...
And the only thing she said as she caressed his head, kissed his hair, rubbed his back was...
"Shh. Shh beta. Shh. I know. I Love you. I know."
Tujhe Sab Hain Pata, Hain Na Maa
Tujhe Sab Hain Pata, Meri Maa
"Shh. Aarav. I know... Don't cry baba. I Love you. I always will... I know..."
She really did know everything about him, didn't she? And why wouldn't she? She was, after all, his Maa.
