karna was right there with Daryodhana, when Cheer haran happened. he was very loyal to his friend, blind to his faults. make him more grey then others.
In the case of cheer-haran – When a husband himself puts his wife's honor at stake, when noble men would taint their sister-in-laws honor, when great warriors and learned men would choose to keep mum – what is a lowly, wretched, ignorant sutaputra to say?
The way I see it, Karna was oath bound and indebted to Duryodhana. I don't agree with his tolerance for Duryodhana's vices. However, from his perspective, everything he was, he owed it to Duryodhana. That is why he made a promise to stand by him no matter what. It is not that he was oblivious to the sins of Duryodhana, but he was actually willing to pay for and die for Duryodhanas sins. That is why he didn't defect to Pandavas when he found out they were his brothers. His friendship oath would make him obliged to hand the kingdom to Duryodhana. But since he knew Duryodhana was on the wrong side of history – he chose death and atonement. Makes him demi-Christ like in my view.
But this is the beauty of MB. Every character is so nuanced and can be interpreted in so many ways.
