Once Upon a Time's Lana Parrilla: Why Regina Really Learned Magic

Oct 26, 2012 11:27 AM ET
by Natalie Abrams

David Carlyle and Lana Parrilla

It did start from a good place.

Though we know Regina (Lana Parrilla) as the Evil Queen who tore apart the Charming family, destroyed the lives of countless fairy tale characters and is guilty of numerous other offenses, there was once hope for a young girl who fell in love with a stable boy ' and maybe there could be again. In this Sunday's episode of Once Upon a Time, we'll see both how Regina learned magic and why she is currently struggling not to use magic in order to win back Henry (Jared Gilmore).

Lightning Round 2: Once Upon a Time bosses answer your burning questions!

In a fairy tale land flashback, Regina will begin her magic lessons, while hoping to stick to her promise of not turning into her mother, Cora (Barbara Hershey). "She realizes that not all magic is bad and if she can use it for good, then maybe it's OK to use it," Parrilla tells TVGuide.com. "You'll see, in this coming episode, Rumplestiltskin [Robert Carlyle] teaching her magic, but she has a secret. She has an agenda of why she wants to learn the magic. It's not to destroy anyone. It's not to destroy her mother. It's not to really hurt anyone because she doesn't want to."

In truth, she wants to bring back her dearly departed stable boy Daniel (Noah Bean), whose heart was ripped out by Cora in Season 1. Regina will enlist the help of Jefferson (Sebastian Stan), whom we'll see her meet for the first time this Sunday. "He says he can help her bring the stable boy back," Parrilla says. "You'll see them teaming up to try to make this happen." (And based on this promo, it looks like another familiar face will help too!)

Parrilla also teases that we may learn the reason why Regina hates Jefferson so much. "There was something that Sebastian and I talked about: Jefferson must've done something to her for her to punish him and leave him in Wonderland," she says. "What the hell did he do? I think you'll see a little bit this Sunday." She cautions that plans could change down the road, but "as of now, he's involved in something and it's quite sneaky."

Once Upon a Time Photos: Emma's past revealed! Could this be Henry's father?

Meanwhile, in Storybrooke present, Parrilla likens Regina's struggle to quit magic to overcoming an addiction. It will cause her to have visions of Daniel that could drive her over the edge. "A part of her thinks, 'Is that a ghost? Is that him? That can't be him! What the hell is he doing in Storybrooke? I know he's dead!' She saw her mother crush his heart. The minute you crush a heart, that's it, there's no bringing him back. She's terrified. She doesn't know if she's losing her mind. It's a time when she just keeps losing everything, from Henry to magic to power to now the curse has been broken. Maybe she's just on the verge of snapping, so that scares her."

Do you think Regina could ever really quit magic?[/quote]

Look at the TRANSITION in her expressions...such a FINE piece of acting from Lana...and one only REALLY understands this bit from Regina after watching the Stable Boy episode later on

Even since then we continue to bit by bit discover the loneliness within her and her sometimes desperate attempts to find companionship in life but going about it the wrong way and thus continuing to be rejected again and again.

Anu--- oh HECK YEAH Sebastian aka Jefferson/Mad Hatter is definitely a MUCH better actor and character than this Hook guy. I don't even find the Hook guy attractive to be honest. He is one of them HAWT guys but not HOT, if you know what i mean.😆

I can't wait till tomorrow's episode. I really want to know Jefferson-Regina history and how she knows him. I also want to know who is Grace's mother?! Is she still alive and if yes, then where is she? I would love to see more of Jefferson- Grace scene too. Sebastian played the role of a father so well. I really felt for him in that scene in last episode where he finally reunites with Grace...the look in his eyes, the uncertainty whether she will be happy or angry to see him and then the hug and him closing his eyes when Grace says "Papa, you found me, i knew you would." Awww...they are my favorite father-daughter pair and Rumpel- Bae are my favorite father-son pair, Regina-Henry as Mother-son and Snow-Emma as mother-daughter.

WORD, WORD, Anu! and Lana is just such a GORGEOUS woman! She looks the best out of all princesses. Snow is pretty but she is "cute" pretty.
anyhow, Lana excels at these transitions in expressions, her eyes and her whole entire face is so expressive. Her and Robert are definitely THE BEST out of the lot as well as Ginny as Snow. This show wouldn't have been this popular had it not been these fantastic cast👏. Like Eddy and Adam have said numerous times, they write the storyline but it is the actors who bring the characters and the story to life in such a wonderful way.👏

You know I can't even get why people find Hook SO hawt...not even by textbook "hawt" definitions yaar...anyways...oh well...lol

Jefferson is a much much better looking guy on every scale...better features, better eyes, better SMILE, he can EMOTE with his EYES...plus his character has layers...with the whole eccentric/mad side to him...the emotional father etc. etc.

Hook is SO one-dimensionally boring...blehh

Lana and Robert are like head and shoulders above the rest of the cast😆...especially Robert...Lana is brilliant too...Ginny is really good as well but I think Lana and Robert have the meatier parts to play as well which they play SUPERBLY...

I loved this Lana-Robert bit from their Comic con interview😆

" I run Storybrook...No I run Storybrooke"😆...and the way Lana does the evil Regina eyebrow raise in the end😆

These two are just awesomely adorable together in every way :-)
