I had a smile on my face thruout the 2 hr 10 min running time. A feel good movie...
No evil characters, no wicked saas, no abusive or philandering husband, no over the top emotions or hysterics... The characters are just so real, the depiction so realistic, the incidents and the issues addressed are just so close to reality... you could associate it or relate it with people you know...
Impeccable ensemble cast... Everyone, Right from the Saas who alternated between caring and naughty, the little boy who played her son, the pesky teen daughter, the endearing niece who was her confidante, the NRI sister ( for a change NRI's looked and behaved like NRI's unlike the NRI's in Kjo's Lala land) and the entire cast of her english class. Just fabulous casting. 👏
And AB in a little cameo... Tho a little over the top, but it was hilarious.
Special mention to her husband and the french guy... The husband, very understated performance but makes the right impact... Unintentionally insensitive towards his wife but not a jerk... Very subtle and effective acting... The last scene where he asks her, Do you still love me... Awww...
And Sridevi's response regarding the two ladoos on his plate... Sweet...
The french guy... How adorable was he... The interaction between him and Sridevi, The conversation in different languages but still having the emotional connect... Very well portrayed...
And finally Sridevi... What a comeback!!!. The best comeback in recent times...
Beautiful portrayal of Shashi... Her expressions in some scenes... How swiftly they would change from joy to sadness and back to being normal... Some of the scenes its just her eyes emoting and they do the talking...
Her expressions when her husband says that she is born to make ladoos, her expressions in the auto after the PTA on the way back home when her daughter shouts at her, Sridevi's expressions when she puts the phone down after that scene where her daughter's searching for her school work and she calls her Mom in NY, her expressions in the scene where she is making the ladoos again just before the wedding... So many scenes... Without any dialogues she had so much to say and portray...
And her speech in the end, Talking abt the significance of her small little world in a wider world. Beautiful...
Not just the ensemble cast, the technical team too has done a great job...
Excellent cinematography. The cinematographer has captured NY and its suburbs beautifully... The vibrancy of Times Square, the sights, the sounds and the fall colors... Just gorgeous... Add Amit Trivedi's tunes to this and we have a winner... 👍🏼 Crisp editing too, the editing team has done an excellent work.
And finally the captain of the ship, Gauri Shinde...👏 What a debut. Very commendable. She was right when she said in an interview, I am a better director than Balki. I agree with her, She is a far superior director compared to Balki.
Its not like one fine day all these excellent actors landed up at the same place at the same time and they performed well. Its not an easy task to extract subtle understated performances.
Its a talent, not many directors have that. The credit goes to Gauri for bringing out the best in them.
Writing a story is an art and making it believable and relatable, thats how a viewer connects to the movie...
She has captured the nuances, the finer details so well... Its normal to feel alienated in a different culture, in a different setup...The foreignness in a western country is overwhelming for a new person who is alien to that culture.
Some of those scenes were so relatable. The metrocard scene, i have seen my mom struggle with it the first time she tried it here...
The scene in the cafe where she struggles to place an order, I had a feeling of deja vu while watching that, I remember my grandmother's first visit here... She wanted to be independent and do things on her own... We were at a museum cafe and she saw biscuit listed in the menu. She likes to dunk the indian biscuits while having her coffee. She was thrilled to see biscuit in the menu and happily ordered one. What she got was a completely different biscuit and she was trying to explain at the counter what exactly she wanted. We were sitting at the table and we saw her mumbling and make these dunking actions holding the coffee cup in her hands... and the confused look on the lady's face at the counter... hilarious. She came back to our table saying These americans are a confused lot, I asked for a biscuit and they get me some kind of bun... 😆 After that she made sure she said either cookies or cracker the next time she was at a cafe...
And this scene at the immigration counter where Shashi mumbles and blurts out a funny response... My aunt had a similar experience... She was visiting when my cousin was expecting and was here to help her daughter. The immigration officer had asked her What's the purpose of your visit?.
My aunt was nervous and she said I am expecting and I am here bcoz my daughter will help me out . The officer looked at my 55+ year old aunt with a wide smile and said Congratulations!!! and stamped her passport... Its only after a few minutes she realised her blunder and she came out and narrated this to us waiting outside. All of us including her had a good laugh at the airport that day... 😆
So many nuances, minute details putting it into a story and making it coherent... Gauri Shinde has done her research well... Hope to see more of her work in the future. Its so heartening to see these female directors making a mark in a male dominated industry... Farah Khan, Zoya Akhtar and now this one... Good job ladies... 👏
Its been a great year for Bollywood. Kahaani, PST, GOW, Vicky Donor, Barfi and now EV. 👍🏼
