Talk about collateral damage...both drivers and bodyguards...I was pondering if someone had somehow gotten to any of them, but no, they were faithful...wow...

So the current threat was against Khushi only...I guess that was to shift their focus and make them more vulnerable...

Arnav and Khushi kidnapped...Is it too much to assume that they will be held at the same location?...hum...

I think if I was the kidnapper and had the resources, I'd prefer to keep them at separate locations, using two sets of goons, each un-known to the other...divide and conquer...or in the case of my scenario, keep Arnav and Khushi from dividing and conquering the kidnappers...

Humm...the pictures were only of Arnav and Khushi...so this could all be a roose by Arnav to keep them out of danger...

Anxious to find out what happens next...

It's interesting to note that the threat came to Khushi only this time. Or has it come to Arnav before and only they have no idea about it? Why is it different this time?

Unless we know what kidnappers are up to, it;s not possible to figure out what they are going to do. There were pictures of Arnav and Khushi cause they are missing and wanted general public to be aware of the fact.

Thanks for the comment :-)

"We, the people" ... a brilliant title for a political drama! The title itself indicates that you have clearly thought this out and researched this story well in advance. And I am impressed by the research that has gone into this!

The first chapter exuded a particular grasp of the political and socio-economic scenario in India -- particularly from the 1970s to to the 1990s and the present day -- from a *particular* perspective. Would I be wrong if I said that this knowledge is unusual? I am not sure how many folks these days are aware of the changes -- the changes in the political system from the days that "We, the people" was drafted and enacted to the present day. Now, unusual thought it may be, it is very welcome! Thanks for developing a fan fiction against this background.

---

Chapter 2:

...
"Do you think what we are doing is wrong?" She asked in a small voice.

"Yes," his answer was instant.

"Then why do we do it?" She asked again.

"Because we aren't convinced of what is defined as 'right'."

...
To be continued

Now, this exchange tells us exactly where your characters stand. Will they ever be convinced of what is defined as 'right'? I look forward to their journey.

---

A few things of interest that I noticed, as I read along.
  • At the end of chapter 2, there is enough to convince Arnav and Khushi that Dhananjay was guilty. But, at the same time, there is a scintilla of doubt about the women's intentions as the complaint was lodged in a police station that is not friendly to the Rathores, away from the closest police station.
  • Khushi has enough connections to get the sub-inspector (at the Rathore-unfriendly-police station, I assumed?) transferred to a police-unfriendly area for leering at her.

---

PS: I will be back with comments on each chapter as I re-read them.

PPS: I was very impressed by one particular factual aspect of your research, which is revealed in one of the later chapters. I will get to that as I comment on that chapter. Want to guess which one?:-)

Chapter 9:

He squint his eyes and shut them when the brightness of the room became too bright. He didn't know where he was or what time was it. His entire body hurt and his head was ready to explode. He groaned loudly when he found himself bound at feet and hands behind his back. He lay on his side which for some unknown reason – wet.

"Hello?" He tried to yell but his voice came in a little above hoarse whisper.

"Hello," he heard a response to his question, few feet away from him. He rolled on to his side and saw a man of his own age standing and looking at him. Arnav stared at the man for several moments unable to formulate a response.

"Nice to meet you Arnav," the man said and motioned to someone seven feet away. Arnav heard footsteps nearing him and felt the ropes binding his hands and feet loosen as people hovered around him. They supported him when he tried to stand but collapsed due to numbness in his calf muscles. The people caught him and held him upright till he found footing.

"Get him cleaned up." He instructed the men supporting Arnav. "We will meet in another hour Arnav. We will get something to eat and….talk," the man said and nodded at the men.

"Who are you?" Arnav asked as the man turned to walk away.

"I am the man who is going to bring salvation to the people." He smiled softly and walked away.

Arnav watched the man walk away and didn't resist when he was pushed in opposite direction. He allowed the men to burden his weight and finally looked at his side which was wet and his shirt was sticking to his skin.

It was blood.

****

Rathore was furious, disappointed and scared. He was all rolled into one when twenty four hours had passed without any news about Arnav or Khushi and the first report of scandal was now running in national news channel. It would have been a moment of celebration had there not been any intervention from his party or family. Bhanu Pratap had gone ahead and done something incredibly dumb which had the ruling party sniffing their backyard for dirty laundry.

"Is there any news on Arnav?" Rathore asked Imran for fifth time since morning. Imran shook his head.

"We have a problem sir," he said and handed him an envelope. Rathore took it passively. His face discolored when he read the contents. The attack had already begun.

"What is it sir?" Imran asked looking at the way Rathore was rendered speechless. Rathore mutely handed the sheet of paper to Imran.

"Find me a replacement for Khushi immediately." Rathore barked orders regaining his sense after despair washed down. "This may completely blow out of proportions so keep our guys ready to deal with the media. Get a woman to talk about Khushi in this news channel," Rathore said pointing at the television. "And where the hell is Bhanu Pratap?"

"He was located in your farmhouse two hundred kilometers away. They are bringing him now." Imran replied.

"Get me Shukla. And tell him to organize a search party," Rathore said and dismissed Imran.

Shukla was chief security officer for Rathore and his family members. With experience ranging from Indo-Tibetan Border police to Special Protection Group, Shukla was Arnav's first choice to manage security for the Rathore family. Rathore never knew how Arnav knew Shukla and when asked, neither man gave him a satisfactory response.

"The search is already underway sir," Shukla said coming in to the office. He noted the Rathore looked much older than he did forty hours ago. Arnav's abduction had come as a shock to the older man. Shukla didn't want to dwell on the reasons for that.

"What do you know so far?" Rathore asked. The police had already briefed him about simultaneously disappearances of Arnav and Khushi but the answers were less than satisfactory. The cars were attacked en route to Rathore's residence and the supporting staff was killed execution style. As it was early in the morning, there weren't enough witness to put together a story.

"Sir, I have pulled in footage from all operating CCTVs at traffic signals, malls, ATMs around the area of abduction."

"Why aren't police getting recordings from traffic signal cameras?" Rathore yelled impatiently.

"Sir, we don't have cameras at every traffic signal. And not every camera that is installed, works properly. I found that of the forty cameras in the area, only sixteen are operational. Municipality hasn't paid for data storage and recovery for the rest of the cameras so the service providers have cut it off." Shukla said.

"What do you know?" Rathore asked.

"Arnav and Khushi were abducted by people working for same organization. They were taken in out of their cars and into SUVs. I could trace the cars via CCTV recordings for about thirty four kilometers after which the SUVs enter national highway."

"They could be anywhere. Did you get the license plates?"

"I am afraid I didn't sir." Shukla's voice held a hint of disappointment. "There is another thing sir," Shukla said. Rathore looked at him. "The bodyguards and the drivers were shot from a long range."

"They were killed by snipers?" Rathore's voice held indignation. Shukla nodded. "They didn't kill Arnav and Khushi because they wanted those two alive." Rathore said thoughtfully.

"They could be used as bargaining chip sir. I know that they aren't family so I am unable to figure out why they could be taken," Shukla speculated. Rathore looked away.

"Dhananjay will be arrested in few hours. A non-bailable warrant has been issued." Rathore said after holding the silence for an extended minute.

"I will make arrangements sir," Shukla said. He nodded and left the study. Shukla would now use all his connections to get information about police force which will be involved in his arrest and detainment, blue prints of jail and jail conditions, medical staff which is on call for the detainment facility. If everything went well, Dhananjay would be admitted to hospital under a false medical condition two hours after arrest.

Rathore had that much time to find a replacement for Khushi.

*****

He couldn't help but stare. Khushi was sitting at the table. Bandages were wrapped around her arm and wrist of right hand and her left forearm was purple with bruise. Her right shoulder had a small patch of bandage. Bruises on her cheek and temple, split lip, black eye adorned her face.

"Arnav," she said looking at him. He was probably better off compared to her as his major injury had come from a wound on his left side of the stomach. Besides that there were general bruises and scratches on arms and neck.

Without replying, he hurried towards her and hugged her tightly. He ignored the pain on his side as relief washed over him seeing her alive. He had considered the possibility of Khushi being targeted too.

"You aren't alive by chance," a voice said. Arnav released Khushi from his arms and turned. The man who he had met earlier was standing in front of him. "We could have killed you the way your drivers and bodyguards were eliminated."

"But you didn't." Khushi was the first to speak up.

"Yes, we didn't." The man replied. Arnav chuckled slightly.

"What's funny?" The man asked motioning them to sit. He turned around and signaled a man who was guarding the door.

"The way you have used personal pronouns is very interesting," Arnav said pulling a chair for Khushi at the dining table. "Before you answer that, can you tell me what should I address you as?" Arnav asked sitting in a chair next to Khushi. He had decided to play along for a while and it seemed like Khushi had similar idea like him. They weren't protesting but keenly observing the environment they were in.

"Call me Akash," the man said. "But what's interesting about my words usage?" He added pouring the three of them juice from container.

"When we met earlier, you said 'I am salvation' but now you keep saying 'we did' and 'we could'." Arnav said and took the juice offered by Akash.

"What does that imply?" Akash asked.

It was Khushi who answered. "It implies that the philosophy that you are trying to emulate isn't your own though you are completely responsible for its execution." Khushi replied and took a sip of the juice. The cold orange juice refreshed her parched chest and she sighed softly. Akash was staring at her.

"Aren't we all the same? I mean take Arnav here for example. The idea behind the bill for CMSEC – Coal Miners Special Economic Commissions is a subset of what Indira Gandhi used for her second term campaign – Garibi Hatao. It's truly mesmerizing that opposition came up with a plan which is bound to be enslaved for corruption while the opposition's constituency waited for the economic reforms they were promised. You screwed the ruling party and ensured that your vote bank isn't swayed in 2014 general elections. Pretty smooth, if you ask me." Akash said.

"I didn't plagiarize Garibi Hatao program by Indian National Congress." Arnav shook his head.

"You didn't. You improvised it." Akash smiled humorlessly. Arnav shrugged at that.

"Why are we here?" Khushi asked, thirty minutes into breakfast. They were eating without any further conversations and the tension in the room affected her first.

"You are here because I want you to be here." Akash smiled.

"What do you want?" Khushi asked Akash not understanding where the conversation was going.

"What I want is a country without people like you." Akash's response was immediate. Khushi and Arnav exchanged looks. "I don't blame people like Rathore or Dhananjay for the choices they make. I blame people like you who help them realize the choices which…have brought the country to its knees." An unknown emotion laced his voice as Arnav and Khushi looked at each other again.

"So what you want is a totalitarian rule," Arnav scoffed.

"No Arnav. What I want is work to be actually done in government and government employees don't act the way they do now. I want public transportation to help people and improve their lifestyle. Income tax raids will be made transparent, production in industries would be improved – competitions for tenders would be made public and failing to meet deadlines would be met with severe punishment." Akash said his voice full of passion.

"The last time someone made a similar sounding statement, she added a word before all the garbage you just sprouted." Arnav said. Akash didn't respond.

"What is it?" Khushi asked.

"Emergency; after invoking article 352 of the Indian Constitution, Indira Gandhi made a proclamation similar to the one you just did after declaring the country to be in state of emergency." Arnav said staring at Akash. Akash looked at the two of his guests serenely.

"Let's enjoy our food now, shall we?" Akash said smiling at the two of them.

Khushi's palm found Arnav's hand under the table and clutched it tightly. Arnav squeezed back immediately in response.

A misguided intelligent man with great contacts and money was probably one's worst nightmare. There was no way he was going to let the two of them walk out alive.
