How Barfi! managed to keep the buzz alive and kicking

Barfi! managed to generate good online buzz, thanks to the combined efforts of the lead actors, Ranbir Kapoor and Priyana Chopra. Barfi! search activity has peaked at the right time and with early positive reviews, expected to get a good opening weekend.

Anurag Basu's new movie, Barfi! has generated a lot of hype in the last few weeks with a unique story line about a deaf & mute boy and an autistic girl played by Ranbir Kapoor and Priyanka Chopra respectively. Here, we try to look at the buzz created around the movie, leading upto its release date on Sept 14, 2012. We analyze the search trend and also try to link it to the news items in the 2 weeks prior to release, which is the most critical period for movie promotion. The news items are mostly related to movie related promotional activities in different media platforms (like TV, Radio, Web) and offline 'meet and greet' activities at malls, public places as well as interviews given by the stars of the movie and some times, the director too! Of course, controversy also finds its way for every Bollywood release, and as they say, any publicity is good publicity. As movies get 360 degree media coverage, coverage in all media (Print / TV / Radio / Web / ...) lead to increased curiosity / interest levels about the movie and result in a corresponding increase in search related to the movie and the main stars.

The first spurt in search activity on Barfi! happened on Sep 1-2, 2012, with the launch of 'The Flavor of Barfi!' application on YouTube (Aug 31) and the launch of the song, 'Kyon' (Sep 1). YouTube, being an online powerhouse, there is no doubt, that this association led to a jump in Barfi related search. Music plays a very important role and the release of the song, 'Kyon' beautifully rendered by Papon and Sunidhi Chauhan to Pritam's music also contributed to increased Barfi! buzz on Sep 1-2.

After the initial jump in search activity, it dropped for a few days, before gaining momentum again on Sep 8-9, 2012 (Weekend). In between, Ranbir, Priyanka and Ileana did the rounds of sets of different serials like 'Tarak Mehta Ka Ulta Chasma' on Sony SAB and sets of reality shows like Indian Idol on Sony, Dance Ke Superstars on Zee. Most of these programs were telecast during the weekend, which also contributed to the corresponding online buzz. Ranbir also kept himself in the news with his denial of quitting Abhinav Kashyap's Besharam in interviews. Priyanka was in the news for being feted by the Mayor of Bareilly. Did you know before, that she is from Bareilly and the place also has a Mayor!

Finally, as we said, a little bit of controversy prior to the movie release doesn't harm anyone. So, the controversy related to Murphy suing Barfi! producers definitely worked its magic on Sep 11-13 and of course, Ranbir and Priyanka visiting the sets of Jhalak Dikhla Ja and reviews coming in early on Sep 13, led to Barfi! conquering new heights.

A quick comparison of search related to the stars of the movie show, that Priyanka maintained a healthy lead over Ranbir throughout the period under consideration. However, this is not a seasonal trend. Historically, search related to Priyanka is more than Ranbir. Being a beautiful actress does have its perks! Of course, news about the impending launch of her single at NFL and her new found friendship with Salman Khan, helped her increase the gap with Ranbir in the last few days. The peaks of search activity for Ranbir and Priyanka matched the peaks of the movie, as they were both actively involved in the promotional activities for Barfi!

When we compare search activities for Raaz 3 (Release: Sep 7, 2012), Barfi! (Release: Sep 14, 2012) and Heroine (Release: Sep 21, 2012), we find, till Sep 1, Barfi! and Raaz 3 were mostly lagging behind Heroine. Only in the days prior to its release, did buzz on Raaz 3 break out from Barfi! and Heroine leading to a jump in searches in the Sep 5-8, 2012 period and later gradually declining. Barfi has maintained a lead over Heroine since Sep 1 and the gap has been widening post Sep 10.

Kareena maintains a clear and healthy lead in search over both Priyanka Chopra (who comes next) and Bipasha Basu. Bipasha only managed to reduce the gap with Priyanka and Kareena for a short period of Sep 5-9, around the release date of Raaz 3. Priyanka has managed a steeper increase in the last few days leading to the release of Barfi!

A quick glance at the top states from which search is being generated reveal, that Barfi!, Ranbir and Priyanka have been able to work their magic on most of the big states in the North, West and East region of the country. However, Punjab is not in the top states for Barfi! Similarly, Maharashtra is not in the top states for Priyanka Chopra. Maybe, she has to do more groundwork in her adopted state? Assam and Bihar don't feature in the top states for Ranbir, though there is a surprise in form of Andhra Pradesh bringing up the rear in his list. Without doubt, Barfi! is expected to do good business in the states, where all 3 are on top.

Overall, Barfi! has managed to create sufficient buzz in all media, including the Web and with all round support from all the leading actors, the marketing team have all reasons to feel happy about their efforts. The outcome in terms of the first weekend Box Office numbers will be out soon.

SPOILER ALERT.

Though I'm pretty sure Jhilmil would have come running after Barfi even if Shruti hadn't, but then the whole beauty and charm of that scene would have been lost! That struggle just makes it all so REAL to me! In the midst of the fairytale that Barfi is..I'm glad these characters aren't totally selfless. They all have VERY real feelings.
I saw your post last night only but then I had to go and sleep...and we had such similar thoughts. Like they say, great minds think alike😉 Coming to the topic, seriously even I think that Shruti would have followed her heart had it not been her mother. But one thing I still don't understand is if she knew deep down that she is not that happy, why choose such life for her daughter? Even I felt bad for Shruti...you can actually relate to her emotional turmoil at some level or the other. And WORD to whatever you said about the message portrayed through this particular portion of the movie. Haha *hi-five* But then, I'm not sure exactly how well Shruti-Barfi would have worked..she did fail his trust waala test. I guess it never was meant to be between them. Maybe the mother knew deep inside, but didn't want to believe it? Also, its as if the mother didn't really learn her lesson with her decision to marry Shruti's dad. Remember how Shruti said the first thing her mother asked her about Ranjit was what his parents did? I think the mother only cared to make sure her daughter married a respectable guy with money. She probably thought that even if Shrtui still loves Barfi, at least she would lead a comfortable life with Ranjit 😕

Barfi! Is Excellent On Monday

Tuesday 18th September 2012 11.30 IST

Boxofficeindia.Com Trade Network

Barfi! had excellent collections on Monday as it dropped just 25% from Friday. The collections on Monday were around 6.50 crore nett as per early estimates. The collections are only behind Ek Tha Tiger, Rowdy Rathore, Agneepath and Housefull 2 for 2012 on a Monday.

The collections at some centres were better on Monday than Friday. Many centres where the opening was not strong saw better figures on Monday. The multiplexes were just excellent as tickets rates come down 20-25% on Monday and collections saw more or less a similar drop meaning similar footfalls to Friday.

The film has grossed over 40 crore nett in five days and with holiday on some parts of the country on Wednesday, the week should finish around 55 crore nett.

I think I may be in the minority but I have some serious questions for the film. I love love the film and it has some beautiful moments. Superlative performance by Ranbir kapoor and he deserves every single praise coming his way. Priyanka Chopra excels as Jhilmil. I loved watching her on the screen despite having so many questions regarding her character. However, surprise package for me was Ileana. Illeana brought so much maturity and calmness in her performance. How can Anurag think Katrina would act like that?? The best part about her was she emotes through her eyes and brings so much depth to the character shruti. Your heart goes out to her because her problems and struggles in the movie are as real as you can get. I can't believe she would not be considered for best actress and if they slot her for supporting actress than fcking awards are majorly screwed. Illeana was truly the star and found a fan in me.

However, this film majorly drags in the second half..]The end sequences of them as oldies were major laugh worthy. They should have cut those scenes because it takes away from the essence of the film. Also, it's really hard to believe that a deaf and mute man and autistic girl could have a successful marriage and life together in this day of age... How can one function in the ruthless world when both are "abnormal" by birth. When you use your brains, the film is really those typical stories with use of emotional tinge... Anurag basu tries really hard to manipulate the audience and make us believe that it's absolutely normal to have two disable people falling in love and creating a world of happiness for them. Other than that, Jhilmil's character was a very half baked one too. Do autistic people talk and speak like that?

With that, film has absolutely stunning cinematography. Revisiting Darjeeling just brought back so many tears. Also, Pritam's soundtrack is the true hero of this movie. When there is so much silence in the film, his music was the narrator...

I hv to admit that the first time i saw this movie i got a little confused being taken back
and forth between the flashbacks.
Yes the question some raised about how Barfi can fend for both of them did come
to my mind. But those days were not like now. Housing was dirt cheap. And life
so simple. U didnt hv to pay extra for tv and sky high prices just for basic necessities.
If one got into the nitty gritty the question wud pop into the mind as to how barfi could
hv thought himself suitable (deaf mute and son of a driver) for the daughter of a civil
servant.
also how would shruti, a bengali housewife have so much freedom that she can defy
her well to do husband all the time and run to barfi every nw and then without getting
kicked out.
But the question of deaf mute and autistic having happy marriage. Ive seen a man
with no legs with a wife who also had no legs and they even had a baby! yes they
both begged for a living. and yes they seemed happy and smiling.
also i know of a deaf mute couple. they met in class and their parents got them married
off.
so differently abled couples do exist and like normal ones can hv smooth lives if they
are compatible. in barfis case i guess i wud argue that he lost his only family the dad
and shrutis marrying the other rich guy made him treasure jhilmils company because
she asked nothing of him and loved him unconditionally. jhilmil is autistic.they are
not mad, they have feelings and thoughts, just not able to xpress them like normal
people can.barfi might hv been more drawn to jhilmil because she too was differently
abled and he thought she would never leave him.
barfi is even better viewed a second or third time round because by then you know
the story and can now take the time to absorb all the little nuances and details of
the story which one may miss the first time round. the beauty in this movie is not
so much in the story as in the telling and unfolding of it, like a beautiful gift wrapped
in equally beautiful layers of wrapping paper the unwrapping of which gives equal
or more pleasure as in the gift itself.

I think the world of the movie was purposely idealistic. In every interview I saw of the cast, they described the movie as 'fantastical'. Like Sukanya Verma's review said " Just like you never wondered how Rapunzel didn't have any hair lice or piled on weight staying indoors all through her teenage life, you better not inquire what Barfi does for a living. Just go with the gud gud gud gud, bood bood bood bood. " 😃
Also yeah, autism is a very large spectrum. Jhilmill was shown to have grown up in a care home, so it is believable that she could talk a bit.

SPOILER:
The only flaw that bothered me was the age gap between the leads and the supporting actors at the end of the movie.Barfi and the others were shown to be younger than the police and the orphanage caretaker but at the end of the movie,Barfi and Jhilmil looked older than the policeman.😕
