CHAPTER THREE
NK was spellbound. She was looking beautiful. The reflection of the fire on her silk night suit brought about a whole new edge to her look. His breath got hitched at the sight of this miracle of a beauty. Her pink, shimmery lips looked luscious and her eyes sparkled in the incandescence. Even though he was tempted to the core, he didn't know what to make out of this gesture. He walked ahead with confusion playing in his eyes but stopped a few steps short of Khushi, questioning her. "Khushi?" he whispered. This is what he wanted. This is what he wanted for long. He loved Khushi more than anything else in the world and here she was tonight, right before him, inviting him but something at the back of his mind held him back.
On seeing the look of uncertainty on his face, Khushi decided to step forward. She gently took one of his hands and walked up to their soft white couch and sat down. None of them said a word for some time before Khushi finally broke the silence. "I don't know how to start and how I can put it across but I'll try to do my best". She took a long breath and looked away as she continued "When I was alone, you were my only support. You held me through thick and thin. You felt the brunt of situation alongside me and never did you once ask for anything in return." She stopped.
NK's eyebrows crouched. "Khushi, you don't have to return anything, trust me" NK started feeling a bit offended. Khushi quickly understood the digression from their mainstream conversation and promptly spoke up, "It's not what you think. I have more to say" and saw NK's face relax a little. "These five years have been a big thing in my life. My life had been overturned that night and you were the one who fixed it". NK opened his mouth to say something but Khushi cut him off. "In these five years, I've learnt to move on. Learnt what it is to start my life over. You've been more than just a friend to me and more importantly, you've been a father to Anika. I want to sort our life out now as we can't go on living like this forever. I want us to be happy. I want us to be together. I want us to be a family and it is your reply that counts and nothing more." She concluded.
NK remained silent for some time. "Are you sure, Khushi?" he asked with concern in his voice. "Because I have no problem with the way we're living now and Anika will be my daughter forever anyway" added NK. "Are you sure?" he repeated. A small smile played on Khushi's lips as she nodded her head in affirmative. His silent prayers were now being answered. Watching his secret dream come to life, NK let out a big smile. Watching NK react so positively cheered Khushi up. Slowly NK took Khushi's palms and moved her close his body. He turned her around and watched as Khushi crouched up on the couch and rested her head against his chest and snuggled into his body, facing away. The light of the fires lit up the room, leaving a mesmerizing effect behind. Moments of silence passed in relishing the feeling of their first touch. NK softly trailed his fingers down Khushi's cheek causing her to sit up and turn to look directly into his eyes. NK leisurely started bending his head to kiss her, for the first time. Oh, how much he wanted to ravish those shimmery pinks. He slowly advanced. Their noses almost touched and Khushi fluttered her eyes close in anticipation but when she did, the flashback of Arnav kissing her came flooding back causing her to stiffen up. NK noticed this sudden tension and watched her contract and crouch her eyebrows with her eyes closed. Sensing uneasiness on her part, he decided to let it be for the night. She had taken a huge step for the day. He understood how hard it was her. He removed his hand from his cheek.
"Khushi?" he called out her name with patience. She opened her eyes and realized that the fear had played out on her face, causing him to stop and looked guiltily up to him. "It's ok. I understand. We'll take it slow. I love you, and that is all that ever mattered to me" he assured her to which Khushi just smiled and nodded. He waited for a reply but didn't get any. The lack of reciprocation of his feeling didn't go unnoticed and it pinched NK somewhere inside but he decided to overlook it. Khushi was now in his life forever. They have more than enough time in their hands now.
He stood up and took Khushi by her palm and walked her to their bedroom. Gently placing her on the bed, he quickly changed into his night tracks, blew off the candles and returned to their bed. He quietly wound his hand around Khushi's waist and Khushi placed her palm on his and together they drowned in peaceful slumber.

The next morning was usual, both getting ready for work but the only difference being that a ghost of smile never left their lips. They were happy. They were finally content. Over the breakfast table, they decided to make it official and declare it publicly over the next weekend. NK's eyes had new spark today, Khushi noted. As he was about to step out of the door, Khushi started "Your friends have dropped Anika to school. Don't forget to'" "' Pick her up" finished NK. She, in response, gave him a hearty smile. She was about to turn back and close the door when she suddenly felt a quick kiss on her cheek. Initially unsure but slowly as the feeling sunk in, she smiled shyly. She turned around only to find NK opening the car door and settling in it and finally driving away down the road.
A smiling Khushi closed the door but as she turned around to see the empty house, a sense of uneasiness started playing in her heart. It was weird, a feeling that hadn't been felt for so long that it started feeling foreign now. She shrugged it off after some time and started doing the left over chores. The morning chores were her duty and the night chores were NK's. She kept ignoring the nagging feeling in her heart and kept working. Finally, as she dressed up and rechecked the windows and door locks and was about to step out, the landline rang. She was already late and wished for the message to pass on to the voicemail. As she opened the front door and was about to keep her first foot out the house, she heard a familiar voice over the answering machine, causing her to freeze. "Mrs. Khushi Kumari Gupta Singh Raizada".
It was not a question, not an exclamation; just a statement.
