Vampire Diaries Boss: Stefan Will Lean on Caroline During Elena's Transition

When The Vampire Diaries returns for Season 4, the friendship between Stefan (Paul Wesley) and Caroline (Candice Accola) that fans have been clamoring for will finally be further explored.

"I always look at Caroline as Stefan's future [best friend] Lexi [Arielle Kebbel]," executive producer Julie Plec said during this weekend's ATX Television Festival panel, moderated by this reporter. "You've seen little pockets of a friendship spark between them, and I see Caroline in the long run of the series becoming that important in Stefan's life."

1. Stefan will lean on Caroline during Elena's transition: "Caroline is an acolyte of the Stefan school of sobriety so to speak, so she's going to be all, 'I'm with you buddy, I'm on your team' as they try to help Elena [Nina Dobrev]," Plec said. "I remember saying in Episode 203 when Stefan takes Caroline under his wing that the two of them and their chemistry was so delightful... It's such a pleasure to watch."

2. A possible rekindling for Caroline and Matt: While Caroline is very much in love with Tyler (Michael Trevino) at this moment, after re-watching the beginnings of Caroline and Matt's relationship in Season 1, Plec said, "I think Caroline and Matt [Zach Roerig], in the long run of the series, will have another moment."

3. Bonnie's dad will finally be introduced: "It's time!" Plec said when we asked about Daddy Bennett's arrival. "This year is a big year of transitions. It's the end of senior year, and there's a rich home life for everybody we're going to explore."

4. Will Joseph Morgan be back as Klaus in the season premiere? We asked Plec if this tweet to Morgan meant she could confirm he'd be in the premiere. Unfortunately, the mention was a little premature. "I actually can't say," she said. "We haven't broken [down] the script yet, so it remains to be seen how long we'll play Tyler as Klaus."

5. Alaric (Matt Davis) could definitely return: "As long as Jeremy can see ghosts and Alaric is out there in the universe, then there's a window there," Plec said. "The moment in the end of the finale when he shows up broke every rule in the book, but I didn't care. For us it was more important for us to give Matt Davis and Alaric that last goodbye to say, 'Yes, he was the bad guy for the last few episodes, but here he is in that Obi-Wan kind of way.'"

6. Damon's evolution will continue: After re-watching a scene from the Season 1 episode "162 Candles," which screened at the festival, Plec noted that Damon (Ian Somerhalder) has evolved in the two seasons since. "This is a reminder that Damon is a character that started in a very dark place, but with a lot of love and emotion brewing under him," Plec said. "All of our characters, including his own brother, had to witness his evolution as a person and he has done some really extraordinarily sh---y things, but he has also done them in the name of love, pain, abandonment, self-preservation, survival and family. He's going to keep evolving and Elena's feelings for him are going to continue to evolve."

7. Season 4 will make viewers scream: Writer Jose Molina, who was also on the panel, perhaps gave the most agonizing tease. "We have the road map for next season and before we broke for vacation, I was staring and looking at everything we have planned and this stupid grin spread over my face," he said. "I was like, 'They are going to s---.' Already we have so many moments where people are going to freak."

Kevin Williamson Teases Phoebe Tonkin on The Vampire Diaries, Confirms End of The Secret Circle

After first crushing the dreams of Secret Circle viewers hoping to somehow save the canceled CW drama ("I am so sorry to all the fans, but that show is gone."), Williamson turned to that show's breakout star, referred to Phoebe Tonkin as "awesome" and added:

"I want her on Vampire Diaries. I ought to write her in."

Whoa. Yes, Kevin. Yes, you should!

It might be too early to get overly excited over the possibility, but we can't help it. Would you want to see Tonkin in Mystic Falls?

Vampire Diaries Season 4 Spoilers: Julie Plec on the New, More Badass Elena

1 day ago by Jenny McGrathSPOILER ALERT!!
Elena Is All 'OMG' in The Vampire Diaries Season 3, Episode 9,

In the immortal words of Samuel L. Jackson in Jurassic Park, "Hold onto your butts." Season 4 of The Vampire Diaries is destined to be its most exciting yet, and executive producer Julie Plec is stoking the flames of our impatience. She spoke toat the ATX TV Festival and teased some of the things she has in store for(). Spoilers abound!

On Elena's heightened traits:
"WhenElijah [Daniel Gillies] says, 'Your compassion is your greatest gift,' that was very much said as a reminder that that is who this girl is. Her compassion is her gift and her Achilles heel ... When all that stuff gets amplified, it's going to make her, hopefully, kind of a badass, you know? Like, imagine Elena who is willing to stand up and fight the good fight for her brother and for her friends as a human — imagine her now with supernatural abilities …"

Will Elena have a dark side?
"I think that Elena's dark side, so to speak, is actually in her deep, deep, deep connection to other people, whether they are light or dark. So now that these things get magnified, it is her connection to darker things and darker people is that going to bloom at all or is she still going to be the infallible heroine? I think that grief can do a lot to send somebody off their rocker a little bit, so who knows what she could go through as a vampire."

On Elena choosingStefan (Paul Wesley)
"I think in the series it is okay to love them both, but in this moment in the show, there was unfinished business between both and she needed to take a stand and have a point of view about it. I think one of the things we wanted to do was give her last human choice and to make it powerful and for that choice to be born out of who she is in that moment as a human. She's not human anymore, so how will she change and what will that do to her relationship with everybody in her life?"

Vampire Diaries Season 4 Spoilers: Which Couple Might Get Back Together?

June 4 at 07:57PM EDT by Jenny McGrathSPOILER ALERT!!

Who's been going through Vampire Diaries spoiler withdrawal? Don't worry, we got a taste of the good stuff for ya. The ATX Television Festival panel was held this weekend, and Vampire Diaries executive producer Julie Plec was on hand to do some dishing. Some of it had to do with badass blond vampireCaroline (Candice Accola).

First, if you're hoping she'll somehow have a change of heart and fall fangs over heels forKlaus (Joseph Morgan),TV Guide reports you'll have to wait a bit before the OV is back in his Original body. "[I]t remains to be seen how long we'll playTyler [Michael Trevino] as Klaus," says Julie. Speaking of Tyler, things could get rocky for him and Caroline, and not just because his body is being inhabited by another hybrid.

According to Julie, "Caroline andMatt [Zach Roerig], in the long run of the series, will have another moment." Wow. As if Caroline needed another reason to get onRebekah's (Claire Holt) bad side…

There's yet another relationship that will continue to develop for the cheerleader: the one between her andStefan (Paul Wesley). Hold on, Staroline shippers. We're talking about their bestie-ship. "I always look at Caroline as Stefan's future [best friend] Lexi [Arielle Kebbel]," says Plec.

Aw, we totally want Caroline and Stefan to go see Bon Jovi 20 years from now. What? You know Bon Jovi will still be rockin' then. Let's just hope Caroline doesn't end up like Lexi…

The Vampire Diaries to Explore Family, Friendship on Season 4

We may be months away from The Vampire Diaries Season 4 - an extra month, no less, with The CW pushing its fall premieres back until October - but producer Julie Plec was on hand for a panel at the ATX Television Festival in Austin this weekend and offered up a number of teases to keep fans buzzing throughout the summer.

And it all starts with a friendship that will turn into a major focus of the new season.

"I always look at Caroline as Stefan's future Lexi," Plec told an enthusiastic crowned. "You've seen little pockets of a friendship spark between them, and I see Caroline in the long run of the series becoming that important in Stefan's life."

What will bring the pair together when TVD returns? The desire to help Elena with her transition, Plec said, explaining that "Caroline is an acolyte of the Stefan school of sobriety."

Among other tidbits revealed at the panel:

Caroline and Matt will "have another moment," according to Plec.

Alaric may return, even with Matthew Davis starring on Cult and his character confirmed to be dead. "As long as Jeremy can see ghosts and Alaric is out there in the universe, then there's a window there," Plec said.

Without delving specifically into the love triangle, Plec did acknowledge that Damon has grown over three seasons, saying he has done terrible things in the "name of love, pain, abandonment, self-preservation, survival and family" and that "he's going to keep evolving and Elena's feelings for him are going to continue to evolve."

Finally, it's "time" for the arrival of Bonnie's dad, Plec spoiled: "This year is a big year of transitions. It's the end of senior year, and there's a rich home life for everybody we're going to explore."

Writing on Season 4 of The Vampire Diaries begins today. Which of these storylines has you most excited?

Why so serious, Elena? Oh yeah... all those dramatic love triangles and life-threatening situations you get yourself into. We almost forgot.

The Season 3 cliffhanger on The Vampire Diaries has left our minds swimming with questions. Executive producer Kevin Williamson addressed one the biggest mysteries when he spoke toHollywood Life at the Young Hollywood Awards: DidElena (Nina Dobrev) know that she has vampire blood coursing through her veins when she toldStefan (Paul Wesley) to saveMatt (Zach Roerig) instead of her?

"No. She was sacrificing herself for Matt," Kevin revealed. Oh, heck. She really isgoing to freak out when the show returns in Season 4! "It's going to be very emotional," Kevin agrees, saying, "I'm loving the journey that the writers are creating for her."

His co-executive producer, Julie Plec, has hinted that now that Elena is a vampire, things are going to change between her, Stefan, andDamon (Ian Somerhalder). "I think it's really gonna open up both [her] relationships between Stefan and Damon in a brand new way," teases Kevin. Not only that, but the relationship between Damon and Stefan is going to be altered by Elena's transition.

Sigh. Just when those brothers were starting to get along.

Vampire Diaries Boss Talks Season 4, More 'Mean Girl' Rebekah, Killing Klaus and Graduation!

Get More: Interviews, Scoop

The Vampire Diaries' writers room has only just begun to map out Season 4, but boss lady Julie Plec is already privy to some storyline secrets — and TVLine was fortunate enough to pick her brain about a few of them at last weekend's inaugural ATX Television Festival in Austin.

Here's what the Mystic Falls mastermind revealedabout new journeys for both Elena and beloved bitch Rebekah, how Klaus has managed to survive time and time again, impending graduation and more.

On Vampire Elena's Season 4 Journey | "How do you go to high school as a new vampire? How do you fall in or out of love? How does it change who you are and what you feel? … We get really excited when we talk about this [arc] because it feels so deliciously Season 1 all over again," Plec enthused. "It takes us right back to Stefan arriving in Mystic Falls, trying to hold himself together and not let anybody know who he was. Now, we get to watch our heroine go through all of that."

On Why Big Bad Klaus Is Still Around | "I will tell you this — and I haven't said this before: Our intentionwas to kill Klaus at the end of Season 3," confided Plec. "We created the character last year… and our intention was, that after a long, arduous year of trying to vanquish and defeat the villain, our heroes would prevail and he would be no more. But when you have actors [like Joseph Morgan] who are that good, making such a distinct mark in the roles that they are playing, you have to let your storytelling evolve and wrap around that a little bit. We collectively decided around the middle of Season 3 that we weren't done with Klaus — or Joseph. We also weren't done with the Original family, because with the addition of Rebekah and Kol, there's still a lot of story to tell. Sometimes [as a writer] you kill a character because you don't know what else you can do with them, and sometimes you kill them because their death will so powerfully impact your other characters. But if you're killing a character who is doing a great job with tons and tons of story left in him, you're making a mistake. We had to do a bit of an about-face in our storytelling, which is how we came up with the Tyler body swap [in the finale]. So, we got to kill Klaus, and then not!"

On Rebekah's Role as the 'Mean Girl' Queen Bee | "What I'm excited about with Rebekah [in Season 4], specifically, is that we have never had a true antagonist on a human/teenage level," she noted. "We've never had our Valerie [from Beverly Hills, 90210] or our Amanda Woodward [from Melrose Place]. And with Rebekah, who is so vulnerable and damaged but has that tough exterior, we get to see a queen bee in action; we get to see a mean girl. As we get into the second half of their senior year, here's Rebekah, still in Mystic Falls, heading back to school, completely ostracized from the community of people that she knows because of what she did to Elena and Matt [in the finale]. She's completely loathed by the one guy [Matt] that she had a crush on, and also by her past love [Stefan]. What's she going to do about that? How does a vampire, who has all kinds of mind control capabilities and sass, carve her way into the high school world when the people that we love hate her guts? Once she gets over the hump of being "World's Most Hated" in the yearbook, how will she live? And what will her life be like?"

RELATED | Fall TV Grid — What's On When? And Versus What?

On Who Will Be in the Forefront Next Season | "Obviously, Elena and her journey are going to be front and center, but one of the things that we've finally been able to do over the past year is dig much deeper into the other characters — their lives, their wants, their loves. We've given Matt Donovan his due, and given Bonnie her time in the sun, and Caroline especially has evolved into a leading lady in her own right. So, this is going to be the year that 'Donna Martin graduates,'" announced Plec with a laugh. "This is our friends finishing out their high school lives and their lives in Mystic Falls, and each of them is going to have a transitional journey about where they go and what they're meant to be. It's going to be a really exciting year because it's one of endings as much as it's about new beginnings.

On Mystic Falls High's Class of 2013 | "Our goal is that this will be the year that gets them out of high school," she said, "and tees us up for what will become of them in Season 5."

'Vampire Diaries' Season 4 spoilers: Who's coming to Mystic Falls?

It's about that time, "Vampire Diaries" fans. With just a few weeks to go before shooting resumes in Atlanta, the first Season 4 news is beginning to leak from Mystic Falls. This should go without saying, but -- if you're looking to be spoiler-free until the show returns in October, read no further. (Also, uh... good luck with that.)

Our merry gang of monsters and friends is about to grow a bit when a 16-year-old girl named April comes back to town. She's from Mystic Falls, so she remembers Jeremy (
Steven R. McQueen) and Elena (Nina Dobrev) from their childhood, but she's been away at private school for the last few years. She decides to move back to town after a death in the family, so when we first meet her, she's grieving. Perhaps some of our favorite characters can relate. While we're not sure yet whether she's got a hidden agenda, we can tell you that she's smarter than first impressions may convey.

Producers are also looking for someone slightly more threatening. (By slightly, we mean a whole freaking lot.) They're seeking a "scary hot" -- emphasis on scary -- actor to play the imposing Connor. He's described as a "highly trained killing machine," so, you know... nothing too out-of-the-ordinary for a Mystic Falls newcomer.

Both roles are recurring, and we can expect them to be pretty significant in the first part of the season.
