Okay guys, part 10 is coming in a matter of minutes, but I wanted to do this first. I regret the fact that I didn't get to develop Arjun's character a lot so far, and all you guys really know is how sweet he is. But I thought I'd give you a bit of an insight into the logic behind choosing this name for him, and give you a bit of detail on his past.
For obvious reasons, I wasn't going to be an expert on choosing Hindu names, so it took me a while sifting through various websites to find a name that fit with his character. I was considering all sorts of names, but when I came across Arjun I knew it was the right one.
I haven't given much description of what Arjun looks like, besides the fact that he has hazel eyes. This is purely because I'm sure all of you have developed your own image of Arjun, and I don't want to ruin that by giving you my image of him. So there was a reason behind that.
As for the name: Arjun, literally translated, means white in Sanskrit. Other definitions I found were 'bright', 'peacock', and I just recently discovered that the name is based on Arjuna, who was a Pandava prince whose archery skills led him to gaining Draupadi's hand in marriage. Even this fits in with the story in a way, which is a link I had never seen before.
Arjun is Khushi's ray of hope, in a way, and he always has been. Obviously, symbolism of the colour white includes pure intentions, cleanliness, peace - all of which are attributes of Arjun. He has a clean mind, he is a pleasant person, and he always has people's best interests at heart. He is honest, but sometimes love blinds you and makes you forget who you really are. Will Arjun change? You'll discover that a little bit later in the story.
In his past, Arjun has faced a lot of hardship, as has Khushi. When they were younger, Arjun was Khushi's best friend and they both took great care of one another. Up until he left to go to study in London when he was 18, Arjun helped Khushi a lot. Since the age of 11, when Khushi was orphaned, he took it on himself to support her. He helped her adoptive family financially by working whenever he wasn't at school so they would have no complaints against her and would treat her as one of their own. He made many sacrifices for her, and when his parents asked him to go to London to study he didn't want to. Khushi, however, realising exactly how much Arjun had given up for her, made him realise that he had to be selfish for once. He knew that in order to give himself and Khushi better lives in the future, he had to make something of himself, so he decided to go to London to study. He became an accountant from all of his studying, and when he returned to India the first person he had gone to see was Khushi as he missed her dearly.
When Arjun initially told Buaji that he wanted to marry Khushi, it was because he has always had a caring instinct towards her - he never had any impure intentions. Granted, he did fall for her because of the incredibly close bond they had formed throughout their childhood, but the catalyst in Arjun deciding to marry Khushi was that he wanted to protect her from Arnav. It was this trait in him that led him to 'winning' her hand in marriage, like Arjuna won Draupadi's. Where Khushi wants love and fairytales, Arjun's education has taught him that he needs to be a bit more practical.
So, there's a bit of an outline into Arjun for you guys, I hope you found it informative. I personally love Arjun, he's an amazing character and I love writing about him!
