Not all bacteria release virulence factors (i.e. toxins). This bacteria causes necrotizing fasciitis...or more commonly called gangrene. It's a rare infection but fatality rate can be high if amputation is not done in time. Basically, you get a wound (even as minor as paper cut), if this virulent bacteria is around, it will get in and grow underneath the tissue and produce toxins rapidly...which causes the tissue to necrotize (starting from skin to deeper dermis, muscles and eventually organs). Infection can spread from hours to weeks. Therefore, amputation is the only way to prevent it from spreading and causing multi organ failure and death. Not everyone is susceptible though...mostly depends on the bacteria's strain/virulence and the person's immune system as well. For instance, some strep infections cause only strep throat while other strains of strep cause necrotizing fasciitis.
