"I never got the chance to tell you" I defended myself.
"Huh never got the chance, eh? Or you didn't intend to tell me? May be you're planning to sail on two boats," snapped Abhay.
That was it, I couldn't take it anymore. He had crossed every boundary now and I wasn't going to tolerate it at any cost. "Do you even realize what you're saying?" I was on the verge of bursting out in anger.
He took a deep breath and continued realizing his mistake, "I am sorry'really very sorry. I shouldn't have burst out this way," he regretted, "please don't get mad at me pia. I just couldn't digest the fact that he'"
"I don't think it's the right time to go for lunch," I said interrupting him, "I'll see you later." I unlocked the car to get out.
"No, please," he said grabbing my arm trying to stop me, "don't leave. I am sorry for acting like this."
"Sailing on two boats? Is that what you think I could do? Let's get one thing clear Abhay, I am not LIKE you. I don't play with people's feelings. I am not into casual flings; I've never been like that. So don't try to see me in the same light as you."
He was definitely appalled hearing me talking or rather blaming him like this but he didn't utter a single word even though it was evident from his face that he was hurt. "I am sorry," he murmured.
Even I realized that I'd said too much so I decided to not stretch the matter anymore. "It's okay," I almost whispered as he set the car in ignition.
***************************************************************************************
We ate quietly without conversing much though Abhay tried several times to initiate a conversation but I wasn't cooperating. He took me to the same restaurant which had the beautiful Aphrodite's fountain.
"Don't you want to drink from the fountain again?" joked Abhay.
"No, I think I've had enough of it," I snapped.
After finishing the lunch we decided to go for a walk, it was more like a solitary walk because none of us felt like we were in the company of another person.
"I love your dress, I think you're looking wonderful," said Abhay breaking the silence.
"Thank you," I replied with a faint smile and again a long silence ensued.
"You want to catch a movie?" he made another vain effort.
"Okay."
"Okay?" he asked again.
"Yeah."
Then he suddenly stopped walking and said, "Listen, I know I've not been an ideal man. I know I've toyed with people and their feelings . But it's not the same anymore. Trust me. I am a changed man. You have changed me. I will never repeat the things I've done in the past. I love you and I will never hurt your feelings. Though'though I know I need to control my temper. But I get jealous and I lose it. I won't do that again. I promise."
"Don't you trust me?" I asked looking straight into his eyes.
"I do."
"Then how can you think that I would cheat on you and that I would sail on two boats?"
"Because I am dumb and because I got scared and thought that may be," he said with a short pause, "may be you'd leave me'" before he could complete the sentence I ran into his arms, holding him tightly.
"I can never leave you Abhay'never," I said holding him tightly; "I don't think I would ever have the strength."
He held my face in his hands and kissed my forehead saying, "Promise me something now, no matter what happens we will always stay together."
I nodded and fell into his embrace. "Guess what?" I said pulling apart, "I've got something for you."
"Really?" Let me guess'ummm'you're willing to give yourself to me?"
"You're so cheap," I snapped.
"Well"
"Okay let me reveal it to you," I unzipped my bag and took out the box. I opened it and after taking a deep breath handed the box to him.
He took it and seeing the content inside exclaimed, "A ring!"
"Yeah ummmthis belongs to my mother and she gave it to me on my 18th birthday. It's really special for me and I want you to have it." I felt uneasy saying that.
"Why are you feeling so awkward?" he observed, "you know what you're so bad at expressing your emotions," he chuckled.
"Well do you like it?" I tried to divert the attention from my awkwardness.
"I love it. It's a token of your love and I will cherish it all my life," he said approaching me, "but I want you to put the ring on my finger."
I smiled and placed the ring on his finger, "Don't ever take it out, okay?" I mumbled.
"I'll wear it to coffin," he smiled and hugged me tightly.
"You know what? Let me get you the ring and then we'll get engaged right here."
"What?" I said freeing myself from his arms.
"Yep, let's take this up a notch."
"Taking this up a notch would be telling everyone that we're dating," I said rolling my eyes.
"Then let's do it. I have a great idea. Let's throw a party tonight where we make it official that we're a couple now."
"That's crazy."
"I need to do some serious effort to pull you out of your shell. We're doing it okay? We're telling everyone that we love each other."
"And who are going to be on the guest list?" I inquired.
"I am not sure about others but panchi and Jey are on top of the list," he grinned.
