Box Office: Rockstar records opening weekend collection of Rs. 64 crore gross worldwide

MUMBAI: Shree Ashtavinayak Cinevision Ltd and Eros International's magnum opus Rockstar has set the box office ablaze with a spectacular opening of Rs. 64 crore gross worldwide. The film released across more than 2,000 screens worldwide on 11th November 2011 and saw the seventh largest first day India opening in Bollywood's history.

Hailed as Ranbir Kapoor's finest performance to date and his biggest ever opener, Rockstar has grossed Rs. 53 crore in India (Net collection: Rs. 37crore) and Rs. 11 crore overseas in its first three days.

Speaking on the film's fabulous performance, says Shree Ashtavinayak Ashtavinayak Cinevision Ltd, "We are extremely glad that Rockstar has received such widespread appreciation and are elated with the continuing enthusiastic response to the film from all our centers. Working with such a talented and creative team was a great privilege, and we are hugely optimistic of numbers rising in the weeks to come!"

Adds Nandu Ahuja, Sr. VP, Distribution, Eros International Media Ltd said, "Imtiaz Ali has once again captured the audiences' imagination and coupled with Ranbir Kapoor's exemplary performance, Rockstar has opened to a superb response across the country, especially in the multiplexes. With colleges re-opening this week, we are looking at the film remaining steady at the box office through the week".

One of the highly anticipated films this year, Rockstar is directed by Imtiaz Ali and has a glittering star cast of Ranbir Kapoor, debutante Nargis Fakhri along with a memorable cameo by the Late Shammi Kapoor.

Released on the once-in-a-lifetime date of 11.11.11, Rockstar boasts of an irresistible Imtiaz Ali- Ranbir Kapoor- A R Rahman combination, and the film has been receiving not only critical acclaim but rave reviews from audiences as well.

Looking at the spectacular opening looks like Rockstar is truly going to 'rock' the box office for the weeks to come!

Rockstar Holds Up Well on Monday

Monday 14th November 2011 18.00 IST

Boxofficeindia.Com Trade Network

Rockstar is holding up well on Monday. The multiplex collections in big centres are down in the range of 30-50% from Friday.

The fall is bigger in mass centres but the contributions are also less as film has not done well in these areas from day one. Single screens are down from there low levels on Monday and in most single screens it will only survive a week or two.

It is almost certain that the Monday fall is likely to be less than 50% from Friday and collections could even be around 6 crore nett. Rockstar has been accepted by the urban youth and lifetime distributor share could head towards 40 crore.

Nonchalant most people except the film to have abigger opening than ZNMD and singham. What help singham is the mass apeal but for me ajay even with golmal is not abig star at the BO .ZNMD has very dull promotion and the promo didnt apeal to most people with ordinary music in the term of popularity but with all this and ahuge competetion from HP collect 28cr as aweekend which is totally great .Rockstar has great music and great promotion so the weekend is 30cr+ but know the wom will decide the fate of the film but one thing for sure Ranbir is much ahead the other of his generation like Shahid and imraan he is no competetion with the big star .

Q. Ranbir Kapoor is seen as the next superstar but the business of his films his big films is just half of the Khan's so don't you think t is a huge gap which may not become any less?
A. It can get less but only when Ranbir Kapoor works in more commercial films with universal appeal. At the moment most of his films are urban aimed at multiplexes and these films have much lower business potential.

Q. In the 70's and 80's almost all directors made big budget commercial Hindi masala films with universal appeal and today a lot make big budget dark and off beat films like Rockstar, Kites, Guzaarish etc. Is it because today there are no directors left who make Hindi commercial cinema or because masala cinema is not as strong at the box office today
A. There are directors like Anees Bazmee, Farah Khan, Sajid Khan and Rohit Shetty who make full out big budget commercial masala films and its nothing to do with box office as these directors all have excellent box office track records. The scarcity of directors who believe in commercial masala cinema today is probably why the break-even ratio is down to 15% from 50% in the early 80's as its commercial masala films that have universal appeal and bigger box office returns.
