Chapter-9

Gulaal hears a voice behind her"arre itni raat ko aisi sunsaan si jagah pe ek ladki kya kar rahi hai? woh bhi akele akele". She turns around to see a bunch of guys sitting nearby on the steps of one of the college buildings. There were beer bottles lying around and a suspicious looking pipe was being passed around. She could recognize some of the guys as being from the college but the others looked older and tougher. They definitely did not belong to this college.Gulaal could feel her heart beat furiously, she sensed danger and decided to escape before anything untoward happened. But as she quickened her steps she felt a cold, clammy hand on her arm which prevented her from moving forward. She is forced to turn around and to her shock finds herself surrounded by the ruffians. The guy who had caught her comes nearer and she could smell the alcohol on his breath "jawaab diye bina kahan chal diye,akele akele kidhar jaa rahi ho,kaho tho hum saath chalte hain",and the group around roared with wild laughter. Gulaal tries hard to free herself "yeh kya badtameezi hai,haath chodo mera warna main shor machaaungi",and she kicks the guy with her knee. He is caught off guard by the pain and lets her go. she runs for her life and she keeps on screaming "help,help,Kesar,Kesar''" but soon the others catch upto her. Suddenly she feels herself being lifted off the ground. She kicks and screams and does everything to save herself. Finally one of the guys slaps her and pushes her down on the ground where she hits a stone. Gulaal feels a sudden sharp pain in her forehead and slowly darkness takes over.

Kesar stands in the middle of the dance floor for a few minutes completely dazed by what had just happened. The magic of the moment, still fresh in his mind brings a smile on his face. Slowly he comes out of the daze and finds Gulaal missing. He looks around and doesn't see her anywhere which troubles him. He finds Rewa and quickly goes to her "Rewa, Gulaal kahaan hai, tumhe dikhi kya?". "Gulaal, nahi Kesar woh tho tere saath thi na, abhi abhi tho maine tum dono ko dance karte hue dekha tha.achanak se kahan chali gayi?"Rewa asks him with a frown. "Shaayad bahar gayi ho.main jaake doondhta hoon", Kesar tries hard to hide his worry.Rewa chips in "main bhi chalti hoon Kesar, pata nahin kahan chali gayi.uske tho itne friends bhi nahin hain yahan pe..". They rush out of the auditorium and try to find her calling out her name "Gulaal,Gulaal". Now Kesar was getting panicky and all kinds of bad thoughts invade his mind "kahan jaa sakti hai yeh.kitni paagal ladki hai, aise koi jaata hai kya bina bataaye.woh mujhe mil jaaye tho main achi tarah khabar loonga uski". Suddenly he hears Gulaal's faint voice "help'..Kesar", his mind just stops processing and he runs as fast as he could towards the direction her voice came from. Rewa who was close behind Kesar is astonished and screams "Kesar, kya hua kahan bhaag rahe ho? Kesar'", and she too runs after him. Kesar reaches a spot where he sees a group of guys standing around something and he screams "hey". They turn around surprised at being caught and it is then he sees Gulaal on the ground unconscious and blood oozing from a wound on her forehead. One of the guys had his arms outstretched and was about to touch Gulaal's face. Something snaps inside him. A blind fury overtakes him and he attacks the guys. He takes hold of each one of them and hits them with punches to the stomach and face. Some of them run away in fear but a few confront him with one of them taking out a knife. Kesar hits each and every one of them mercilessly and though he feels the knife cut into his arms, he does not feel the pain. He forcefully takes the knife from the goon and takes a jibe at him. He runs away scared.now only one person was left; the guy who had been leaning over Gulaal.Kesar walks towards him and hits him with full force. The guy falls down with the force of the punch but Kesar is not able to stop himself. He keeps on pummeling the guy screaming "tumhari himmat kaisi hui meri Gulaal ko chune ki, use chot pahunchane ki", he keeps repeating, all the while puching the guy. Rewa arrives on the scene and is shocked to see her usually calm brother acting this way. "aahhh", she hears a small groan of pain. It is then that she sees Gulaal trying to get up. She quickly goes to her "Gulaal,kya hua,yeh sab kaise''.",Gulaal's low voice interrupts her "Kesar''use ro'.roko, who maa'maar dega,roko'.". Rewa is completely frightened and with tears flowing down her eyes she screams "Kesar, ruk jaa Kesar dekh Gulaal tumse bol rahi hai, Kesar'". Kesar stops and looks in their direction wildly, his eyes slowly focussing on Rewa first and then Gulaal. He leaves the guy with a final warning "agar aage se tune aisi harkat dobara ki na tho main tujhe jaan se maar doonga aur ise sirf dhamki mat samjhna", he scampers off like the lowlife he was.

Kesar rushes towards Rewa and Gulaal. He looks at Gulaal who is trying hard to stand up. He and Rewa help her up and then Kesar notices her dupatta missing and that her dress has been torn. Once again anger rises in him but he controls himself "Rewa,apna dupatta odaadhe gulaal par", and he averts his eyes. Rewa quickly covers up Gulaal. Suddenly she sways and Kesar supports her "chal Rewa jaldi se ghar chalte hain isse pehle yahan tamasha ho". Rewa nods silently still crying and holding Gulaal tightly. Gulaal tries walking but is unable to do so. Kesar thinks for a moment and in an instant lifts her up in his arms and walks towards the car with Rewa tagging along. He takes a look at her face and is pained beyond reason to see her so pale and drawn. They reach the car and he quickly makes her lie down in the back seat with her head resting on Rewa's lap.Rewa is shocked to see Gulaal like this and tries to clean her wound as best as she could. Kesar drives through the busy streets as fast as possible and they reach home very soon.

Kesar gets out of the car and he goes to the front door and rings the bell. Thankfully the servant opens the door who informs him that most of the family has finished their dinner and retired for the night. Kesar tells him that they have already finished dinner and that there is no need for him to wait on them. He then quickly rushes back to the car, carries Gulaal in his arms and takes her to her room. He sits beside her and asks Rewa to bring the first-aid box. He looks at the wound and finds that blood flow has stopped. Thankfully it was just a minor cut. Kesar proceeds to clean it with Dettol and puts a small band aid on it. He makes her take a pain killer "Gulaal",he finally speaks. Gulaal looks at him, exhaustion written clear on her face. "ab kaisa lag raha hai?"She just nods. Kesar looks to Rewa "Tu aaj yahin Gulaal ke saath rehna,theek hai.use abhi fresh hone mein madad kar.main thodi der mein aakar dekhta hoon.ok". Rewa replies "theek hai Kesar tu bhi jaake kapade badal le kitni dhool mitti lagi hai aur khoon bhi,kahin tujhe chot tho nahi'.", Kesar interrupts her "nahi Rewa, yeh tho shaayad Gulaal ka lag gaya.main abhi aaya,uska khayaal rakhna aur dhyaan rakhna kisiko khabar naho",and he leaves the room.

Kesar enters his room and goes straight to the washroom. He looks at himself and his clothes. He gingerly takes off his jacket and finds small cuts on both his arms. He quickly washes the wounds and puts some medicine on it and puts on a clean white kurta. Looking back at the mirror he wondered"kya ho gaya tha mujhe? pehle kabhi tho maine apna aapa is tarah nahi khoya. Jab bhi koi musibaat hoti tho thande dimaag se suljhaata lekin aaj main gusse mein itna andha ho gaya ki kisiki jaan bhi le sakta tha.agar Rewa aur Gulaal mujhe nahi rokte tho patha nahi main kya kar bait tha.lekin main bhi kya karta, jab maine Gulaal ko aisi haalat main dekha tho main darr gaya.agar aaj main use kho deta tho'..patha nahin kaise, lekin woh mere andar har us jazbaat ko zinda kar deti hai jiske baare mein main khud anjaan tha ". An uncomfortable feeling gripped him. It scared him that he thought of her far more than he should. But he couldn't bear the thought of losing her. He shivered "nahi main use nahi kho sakta.", and even as he thought that, he realized she wasn't his to lose and he sighed.

He looked away from the mirror and decided to go and check on Gulaal and Rewa. Just then he heard a frantic knock on his door and as he opened it he finds Rewa crying "jaldi chalo Kesar,patha nahi Gulaal ko kya ho gaya hai.woh bas tab se wahi baithi hai.na kuch bol rahi aur na ro rahi hai.uska chehra ekdum blank ho gaya hai.mujhe bahut darr lag raha hai Kesar.shaayad hume kisi ko bata dena chahiye". "nahi Rewa,bilkul nahi,tu aisa kuch nahi karegi.woh bas abhi shock main hai aur jab usse baahar aa jaayegi tho sab normal ho jaayega.main hoon na.tu chinta mat kar.chal chalkar dekhte hain",Kesar tries to comfort her hiding his own worry.

As he enters the room he finds Gulaal on the bed sitting in a crumpled position with her usually bright eyes looking blank and lifeless. He comes closer and sits besides her "Gulaal, Gulaal,utho kab tak aisi hi rahogi?chalo utho", and he tries to get her up holding her arms. Suddenly he feels her hitting him trying to free herself from his hold. Rewa is shocked and screams "Kesar", and he speaks in a determined voice "tu jaa Rewa, main sambhaal loonga.woh bas us haadse ko yaad kar rahi hai.main tujhe thodi der mein bulaata hoon,tu jaa'..",Rewa runs away sobbing unable to see Gulaal in such a state. Gulaal continues punching, kicking, hitting him, but he holds onto her firmly and looks deeply into her eyes, "Gulaal main Kesar hoon.tum bilkul safe ho.ghar pe ho.tumhe kuch nahi hua.main aur Rewa theek samay pe wahan pe pahunch gaye.tumhe kuch nahi hua,kuch nahi hua". Slowly she stops hitting him and her face crumples up and she starts sobbing "Kesar mujhe bacha lo Kesar, maine bahut try kiya unse peecha chudaane ka lekin main kamzor nikli. Main bahut kamzor nikli Kesar.main itni darr gayi thi ''",Gulaal is unable to continue and just falls onto his chest holding him tightly muttering into his chest, "Kesar,tumne aisa kyun kiya,mujhe akela kyun chod diya". Kesar's mind is not able to grasp the fact for a few seconds that Gulaal is holding onto him for dear life and his arms remain lifeless to the side but soon he gets a huge smile on his face and his arms go around her "maine kahan,tum hi tho chali gayi thi". She continues with her voice getting stronger " wajah chahe kuch bhi ho tumhe mujhse vaada karna hoga,vaada karo ki tum mujhe kabhi chodke nahi jaaoge,hamesha isi tarah mere saath rahoge ek ache dost ki tarah". Kesar smiles,"haan baba vaada karta hoon.lekin tumhe bhi mujhse ek vaada karna hoga", Gulaal frowns "kaisa vaada?". Kesar gets an impish smile on his face "yeh vaada ki tum kabhi mere upar itna physical violence nahi karogi, nahi tho majbooran mujhe police ke paas jaana padega". Gulaal hits him on the chest with her fist and continues to be in his arms. They stay like this for a few seconds lost in each other. A knock on the door breaks them apart.

It is Rewa on the other side of the door and she is still crying "mujhse raha nahi gaya Kesar.main apne room mein chain se kaise baith sakti hoon yeh jaante hue ki Gulaal ki haalat kitni kharaab hai". Gulaal looks at Rewa and once again thanks God for giving her such good friends who care for her so much. She stretches out her arms towards Rewa and they both hug with Gulaal comforting Rewa "dekho main bilkul theek hoon aur waise bhi jab tak mere paas tum aur Kesar jaise dost hain mujhe kuch nahi ho sakta". Rewa speaks with a tremor in her voice "main bahut darr gayi thi Gulaal,shukr hai tumhe kuch nahi hua". Kesar decides to cut short the emotional moment "ab agar tum dono ka yeh rona dhona khatam ho gaya tho sone chalein.mujhe bahut neend aa rahi hai", and he tries to control his yawn. Gulaal notices a red stain on the sleeves of his white kurta "yeh kya, tumhaare haath mein kya hua". Before he could stop her she had grabbed his hand,rolls back his sleeves and it reveals the many bloody cuts. Frantically she takes hold of his other arm too and notices cuts there too. She was now crying freely "yeh sab kya hai Kesar,itne saare ghaav'.lagta hai chaaku se lage hain.unme se kisi ke paas chaaku tha kya?" Kesar tries to avoid the question but Rewa beats him to it, "haan Gulaal,ek aadmi ne Kesar par chaaku se vaar kiya tha,lekin Kesar bhi kuch kam nahi tha.usne uski itni dhulaayi ki na woh tho darr ke maare bhaag gaya". Gulaal could not mistake the tone of pride in Rewa's voice for her brother but now she feels restless. "agar tumhe kuch ho jaata tho Kesar'tho main kya karti.phir se akeli pad jaati na", Gulaal accuses him. "main aur kya karta Gulaal.un logon ne tumhe chot pahunchaayi, tho main unhe aise hi kaise jaane de sakta tha.aur mujhe kuch nahi hua hai. yeh tho maamuli chot hai jo kal tak bilkul theek ho jaayega", and they both look at each other and smile through their tears. "chalo main dawa laga deti hoon,uske bina main tumhe jaane nahi doongi", Gulaal tells him firmly to which Kesar laughs, "acha baba,jaisa tum kaho main waisa hi karunga,ab khush". With that a big smile spreads across Gulaal's face and Kesar noticed that though she looked a mess with tear tracks on her face,kaajal spread under her eyes and a band-aid on her forehead,she had never looked more beautiful to him and he smiles back. Rewa who notices the entire exchange with a curious eye suddenly realizes "acha tho yeh baat hai,mujhe yeh pehle kyun nahi dikha.aur shaayad yeh dono khud bhi jaante...",and she smiles in a mysterious way.

Kesar in all angry mode n he is saying meri gulaal...how sweet...

I really liked how kesar n reva stood by gulaal n took care of her..kesar is very sensible in telling that no one in the family should knew abt this incident n also asked reva to stay with gulaal this night...

loved the way he is thinking why did he do what he did...why cant he lose gulaal n also his realization that she is not his then why he is thinking of losing her...

Good that reva left them...me loved their hug yaar n also his promise to her that he will not leave her...

Loved the last part yaar..how reva is feeling pride of her brother...n ofcourse their smile with their tears...ab koi intelligent wahaa ho usse toh patha chaljaayega hi na ki inn dono mein kya chalraha hai...reva sharp girl...frankly never expected this...i was just thinking who will realize between them/...reva is a twist in the story...hope she will make them realize n also be a cupid n be with them always...
