Chapter 5
piya was in her sixth month of pregnancy and it was not exactly a joyous period like those women in magazines say it was. The morning sickness had passed but it felt like she was literally walking with a beach ball in her stomach. Her feet hurt and the baby was stepping on her bladder To make things worse, abhay was babying her like she was dysfunctional. She could not even do a single thing in the house without abhay fussing and worrying about her. She was tired being held hostage in her own home with nothing to do. She knew abhay was just being concerned but it was driving her crazy.
"The driver's not in today so I'm gonna drive Ansh to school today," announced piya as abhay was getting ready to go to the studio.
"It's cool. I'll take him," said abhay as he was combing his hair. He really felt piya should not be driving in her current condition.
"It's fine, abhay. You're already late. I'll drive him," said piya. She tried to be civil and reason with him as she did not want to turn this into an argument like they always do.
"piya please, I really don't think you should be driving." piya has had enough of abhay treating her with kiddie gloves.
"abhay, stop it! It's just a few minutes' drive. I'm pregnant, not dysfunctional. You can stop treating me like I'm useless," snapped piya.
"I don't think you're dysfunctional or useless. I'm just concerned about you, piya!"
"Well, I've done this pregnancy thing before and I know what I'm doing," said piya, grabbing the car keys and heading towards the door.
abhay just sighed with frustration. That woman could be very pig headed sometimes. abhay was just worried something might happen to the baby and to piya. piya was pushing herself too hard and not taking care of herself. But there was nothing he could do when she was being this stubborn.
-----
"Bye honey. I'll pick you up after school," said piya as she kissed Ansh goodbye and Ansh walked towards the school's gate.
piya navigated the car and drove into traffic. When the signal turned red, she stopped. The stop was filled with thoughts about abhay and their little fight in the morning. She did not mean to snap at him like that. She knew he was just worried and concerned about her and their baby. But it was infuriating being treated like she was incapable to even drive her own child to school. Being babied by haseena and chand was enough from her. She did not need it from her husband too.
The signal turned green and seconds after piya drove into the traffic, a car slammed into her side of the car and brought the car into the curb. Chaos ensued as she saw smoke coming out of the car. Other drivers stopped to check on her and the other car. piya did not even notice that she was brought out of the wrecked car. All she noticed was the red stain between her legs.
-----
Just when abhay received the phone call, he knew his worst nightmare was coming to life. He had never drove this fast before but he just had to see piya and make sure her and the baby was all right. Now he was seated in the waiting room with numerous scary thoughts in his mind. He knew he should have stopped piya that morning. It was all his fault.
"abhay?" called chand with a hand on his shoulder. abhay looked up with teary and red eyes. haseena and chand looked at him with worry in their eyes. It was like jeh all over again. Waiting in the waiting room for news was a torturous moment for them. They just hoped the ending was not the same as jeh's.
"She's gonna be fine, abhay. She's a fighter," assured chand even though he did not fully believe that himself.
"I should have stopped her from driving. I knew at the pit of the stomach something was going to happen but I just let her go. This is my fault," said abhay, with his head in his hands.
"This is not your fault, abhay. It's just bad and evil luck," said haseena. The driver of the other car who slammed into piya's car was drunk and ran the red light. piya was just in the wrong place in the wrong time.
"I'll never forgive myself if anything happened to piya or the baby."
"Are you the family of piya raichand?" asked a man in blue scrubs.
abhay held his breath as the doctor informed them of piya's condition. He just got piya in his life. He just could not lose her again.
-----
abhay walked to piya's room. He slowly opened the door and the sight that captured his eyes made his heart broke. piya was lying on the bed with her face facing towards the window in the room. Even from afar abhay knew she was crying silently. He neared the bed and looked at her. He did not know what to do to make her feel better. He caressed her bandaged forehead and she turned slowly towards him.
"Hey," whispered abhay with teary eyes.
"I lost our baby," said piya, almost emotionless. Her lack of emotion in her tone scared abhay. It was as if the miscarriage of their baby was nothing to her.
"It's not your faults, honey," said abhay, trying to reassure piya. He did not blame piya not even a little because it was his responsibility to protect his wife and child.
"Yes it is, I should have listened to you," said piya. abhay knew she was trying hard to stop the tears that threatened to fall.
"It's my fault. I knew I shouldn't have let you drive the car. Please don't blame yourself," said abhay, caressing her hand. Her arm was wrapped in a cast as it was fractured. She also had a severe concussion. It was not threatening to her life but due to the impact from the car her body was thrown forward, causing bleeding and miscarriage. There was nothing she could have done.
"abhay, please leave me alone," said piya, looking at the window again. abhay knew they had to talk but that was not the time. He had to give her time to recover and give her space.
abhay gave her a kiss on the forehead but piya continued staring at the window, without any emotion in her eyes. abhay was worried about her as she was not mourning like she should be. He had a bad feeling in his heart that this might the turning point to his perfect little life with piya.
