Part III

Unable to rest, Awdesh was cuddling in his bed. He had had enough and decided to have a walk. He opened up the door of his cottage and it was still dark. People are sleeping in peace. Awdesh stood in the middle of the muddy road wearing a long shawl. The wind was blowing mild. He walked slowly in the mist thinking of her.

Awdesh (thinking to himself) – "Does she really know, who I am? Whatever may be? I like her. There is something that is pulling me towards her. I know her from just a day ago and I want to be with her all the time. I want to talk with her all the time. I just want her to be with me all the time. What is happening to me?"

Lost in his thoughts, Awdesh didn't even realize that he had walked long distance and reached the end of the village and there is lake in front of him.

Awdesh –"she is so much in my thought that I can see her in the lake too. What are you doing to me arpitha?"

He stepped into the lake and it was spine chilling. He then realized that he was not visualizing. It was arpitha in real. He quickly hid behind a nearby tree not grabbing her attention.

Awdesh (thinking to himself) – "what the hell is she doing her at this point of time? That too in this chilled water. Did she also come for a walk and slipped in the lake? "

The very idea made him come out f his hideout and moved towards her.

Arpitha came out of the water with all her body wet and shivering with her hands crossed around her arms. Awdesh just watched her. He couldn't move a bit as if paralyzed. He just stared at her while she shivered and finally reached him.

Arpitha –"What arrre u doinnng hereee? Its damn chilled out here"

Awdesh (still in the trance) –"hmmm…me… I am…"

Arpitha (sneezes) – "hush…"

Awdesh quickly removes his shawl and covers her with it and holds her carefully in his arms. His concern is clearly evident in his actions. Her little sneeze has caused his worry.

Awdesh (worried)– "What were you doing here?"

Arpitha (still shivering) – "I couldn't sleep, so came out for a walk. I saw the water lily and in the attempt to pluck it…hush…"

Awdesh – "you must have been careful. You are freezing to death. Don't do this again please. I will get whatever you want. Just let me know. But please don't repeat such stupidity."

Arpitha enjoyed the moment. But what did he mean by stupidity. She shrugged her shoulders and let herself free from his hands.

Arpitha – "I am fine. Let me go."

Awdesh watched her in surprise. He was just trying to keep her secure.

Arpitha –"I was not stupid in wanting that flower."

Awdesh – "I didn't mean that."

Arpitha didn't care to listen. Awdesh got irritated.

Awdesh – "I was only caring for you. And why should I bother about you. go"

Arpitha turned around. She was really happy to hear those words of care for him. Even in his frustration, care was reflected in his voice.

Awdesh (Softens) – "what would have happened if, you couldn't come out and something could have happened to you?"

Arpitha is completely impressed now. She is awaiting him to speak his heart.

Awdesh is watching her and some unknown expression in her face. He paces straight towards her. Holds her cheek in his palm and lifts the falling wet strands with the other.

Awdesh – "I can't see you in danger. Please understand."

Arpitha was still watching him with deep breaths.

Awdesh – "Let's go now. You'll fall sick otherwise."

Holding her back in his arms, Awdesh supported arpitha aback to her cottage.

Awdesh – "Get rid of those wet clothes first and I'll arrange for something hot to eat."

Arpitha –"thanks, but I am not hungry at the moment."

Awdesh – "it's important you take something warm. It will keep you away from falling sick. You just change. I'll be there."

Arpitha watched her gangster leave in hurry. She wished him to tell her what he really felt.

Arpitha freshened up and tried to fit back in her clothes. Her hook from behind was stuck and she was unable to hook it. Her hands started aching, but the hook was determinant to accomplish its task for the day.

Awdesh came in holding a bowl with a cloth. His arrival, alerted arpitha and she turned around, with her back facing the wall. They exchanged smiles.

Awdesh – "come here and have the hot soup. I somehow managed to do it. This should keep you in good health."

Arpitha – "Umm. I will."

Awdesh – "come and drink it. What are you doing near that wall."

Arpitha – "nothing"

Awdesh – "Then come here and have the soup"

Arpitha (thinking to herself) – "oh man! Why doesn't he understand? How will I tell him that my blouse is unhooked and can't come in front of him? God, when will this man understand?"

Awdesh – "why are you acting so weird?"

Arpitha (irritation reaches heights) – "I will drink. Please let it be there. Maybe you can get me some water also."

Awdesh – "oh yes. I am sorry. I'll get that"

Arpitha waited for him to leave and quickly closed the door as soon as he exited.

She turned around and her attempts to hook her blouse started again.

Arpitha (thinking) – "I need to teach him basic manners. How can he come away like that without knocking?"

The door opened up and in a flick of the eye, arpitha was in his arms, with her hands still behind. Awdesh caught her in time. His warm breath touched her wet hair.

Awdesh (still holding her) – "I came back to ask if you would like some pepper in your soup and accidentally…"

Arpitha (lost in his eyes) – "It's ok. I was trying to arrange my hook in place and …"

Awdesh held her in his embrace and leant back from her neck and hooked the blouse gently accomplishing the hug. Arpitha's first hug ever. Arpitha moved her hands around him and held him in her hug. Awdesh too was passionate enough and hugged her.

The door was open and cold wind blew in causing a shiver in arpitha's spine. The shiver in her body made him come into senses. Leaving her, Awdesh looked straight into her eyes, with regret.

Awdesh – "I am sorry. I didn't mean it."

Arpitha looked away in surprise. When he loves her, why isn't he accepting that? Or, doesn't he love her. Arpitha's eyes were flooded with tears already.

Arpitha – "what…"

Awdesh – "I am sorry that, I should not have…I shouldn't have… I am sorry."

Unable to express, Awdesh leaves the cottage without any further word.

Arpitha is left with tears rolling down her eyes. After her long crying session, she wipes her swollen eyes and sits down watching the sky. She wished she had her mom to company her at eth moment.

Awdesh is walking to and fro in his room.

Awdesh – "what would she be thinking of me. I am no less to any cheap idiot on the road. She should be cursing me to hell. Even her curses are accepted, but can't see her in grief. Oh god, what has happened to me? Why did I behave such cheap? I shouldn't have. Arpitha, I don't know, what happens to me in your presence? I just can't explain. I go MAD. i want to be with you, I need you in my life. Yes, I am sorted out. I LOVE you. Yes I do."

Awdesh's eyes started to weep without his knowledge. They were tears of joy. Wiping them away, Awdesh smiled in joy.

Awdesh – "Yes arpitha, I LOVE you. I will tell you first thing in the morning tomorrow."

Arpitha unaware of Awdesh's true emotions considered that he is not interested in him.

Arpitha – "why the hell did I like him in the first place. Why should I get attracted to his goodness? Why was he so kind and good to me? Why had all this happen to me? Why should my first love die like this?. God, please give me enough strength to forget him. I hate you Awdesh Singh takhur."
