| There are television actors who make a lot of noise about what they are planning to do in films and how bright their future is in Bollywood. |
| And there are actors who silently move from the small screen to the big screen and conquer it. Rajeev Khandelwal, better known as Sujal of Kaahin To Hoga, definitely falls in the second category. After being the uncrowned king of the small screen, he moved on to the big screen, only to work in a brilliant film like Aamir and follow it up with another project, Shaitan. Though his first film was released way back in 2007 and he has had only one release — Shaitan— since then, Rajeev Khandelwal is still one of the most sought after actors in the film and TV industry. What is the secret of his success? "I have always tried to follow a simple motto in my career — judge a film based on the story and characters involved, and not on whether it is a big budget or a small budget movie. When a big budget film with a good starcast fails at the box office, it becomes a small budget one, thanks to the losses, and when a small budget film does good business at the box office, it becomes a big budget film, thanks to the profits," explains the actor. While Aamir helped him silence critics who were raising doubts on his ability to make it big in films, Shaitan helped Rajeev Khandelwal consolidate his position. Now, he is eagerly waiting for his next release, Soundtrack. What is his new film all about? Says Rajeev, "Soundtrack is about a guy from a small town who comes to Mumbai and makes it big in the music industry. As it happens, with success comes a lot of power and money. The storyline is about how, suddenly, things start going wrong and consequently, his life falls apart." While there is nothing new with the storyline, one hopes that Rajeev's performance would make this a different movie like Aamir and Shaitan. Irrespective of how successful his films are, there is no denying the fact that he is still known as Sujal and is television's poster boy. Isn't he finding it difficult to get out of the shadows of his television career? Rajeev disagrees and explains, "I am recognised more as Rajeev Khandelwal, though Sujal is an intrinsic part of my life. Even today, when I attend public functions, most women address me as Sujal or Capt. Rajeev Shekhawat (his character from Left Right Left). I feel humbled thinking of the fact that they still remember my characters and love me, unconditionally. The least I can do for them is make them feel special." But why did he leave television when he was at the pinnacle of glory? Rajeev answers, "I was unhappy with the way things were working out. I am not the kind of guy whose priority is money over quality of work. Television was becoming repetitive and boring. Plus, when do you think is the right time to quit? When the show shuts down and everyone is bored of the show? It takes a lot of effort to take a decision and walk away when you are at the peak of your career. But I feel that it was the right time." Does he regret his decision of moving out of television serials? "I have always believed in my decisions. Though everyone liked Sujal, I knew I was not contributing to the extent I should have. In other words, I was getting praised for stuff that I was not worthy of. So I chose to walk out," he says. Quite a different thought process, one must say. But perhaps, this is what makes Rajeev a unique actor. He also mentions that despite not working for soaps anymore, he is still in touch with his fans. So, what next for him? Apart from Soundtrack, Rajeev is also getting ready to host the next season of the reality show, Sach Ka Saamna. The show that had created a lot of furore last year is all set to return on television in August or September. "We have already completed the first schedule of the show and am waiting to shoot the next two schedules. I feel Sach Ka Saamna is an absolute delight to host and we have done something which has never been tried on the small screen." |
