It is a coincedence that Shantanu is a doctor. as my original hero is a doctor in the Original P&P.. But anyways the credit does go to Mani for pushing me... Hope you enjoy the story too..😃

Pride and Prejudice

Part 1

A beautiful clear morning sky, with the golden sun just above the horizon woke Khanak, who lazily stretched in her bed. Just last night she had a very relaxing dinner with Manav and her head still reeled from he had told her, so casually of the good news that he had been nominated for the architect of the year in the National Builder's Association, which had their award ceremony at the end of the month!! Throughout dinner he had been joking and jesting about making her laugh and then his parting shot had been "Oh by the way Kanks, I am nominated for the architect thingie!!" She had doubled on to him hitting him with her evening purse which matched her lovely deep majenta knee length dress. She usually dressed in jeans or trousers when at work and dressed in dresses on dinner events and outings and also liked to dress in traditional wear when with family on and off... But presently she giggled as she remembered how he had broken the news and shaking her head stifled a yawn and rose sitting up and joined her hands quickly praying for a beautiful day. This was her ritual. She took in a deep breath and was about to climb out of bed when her cell rang and the ring tone warned her of the caller. Smiling and shaking her head she stretched to take her cell and answer the phone and muttered "I am not talking to you!! Get lost you loser!!"

Manav's voice boomed and she frowned as it was coming from outside her bedroom as he spoke "I knew it and hence came over!! Now open this door before I break it down sweetheart!!" Suppressing a grin she pretended to be angry and slipped on her robe to hide her slinky negligee and tying her hair into a pony tail she spoke "You can keep waiting there!! I will not open the door!!" She smiled and walked towards her en suite and he shook his head and sighing turned towards the matronly figure of Mrs. D'sa, the old maid and cook who was sent by Khanak's parents to take care of Khanak. Mrs. D'sa had helped Khanak's mom to actually raise Khanak. She too was giggling and knew that Missy was not going to be easy this morning. She turned as Manav winked at her and she went to prepare Khanak's tea and Manav enjoyed it too. Manav lived very close by and he was dressed in his jogging suit ready for jogging. Khanak appeared outside after freshening up in her office formals, a deep rose pink shirt over dark steel grey trousers. Pursing her lips trying not to smile her pleasure she walked and bade Mrs. D'sa a warm "Good Morning Dee..", that was her way of addressing Mrs. D'sa ever since she could remember starting to speak... Mrs. D'sa frowned at her being dressed so early in the morning and Manav tried to hide the curious spark in his light brown eyes.

He walked towards her casually and grabbing her by her arm made her sit and spoke "Aah, after my heart I tell you Dee.. she will never learn!! God Kanks, why are you dressed so early.. in this unearthly hour. You usually exercise!!" So sighing she took in a deep breath always could never remain angry with this dear friend and taking the cup of coffee which she so much enjoyed spoke "Appointment with the Khurana's. Have to make a site visit before they leave for their trip abroad. Will give me plenty of time that way to start my work with them out of my hair!!" Manav's eyes twinkled as she informed him "Aah.... yes Khurana's are always better out of any one's hair!! They can be quite.. disturbing.." As soon as he had quipped that Khanak burst out laughing forgetting that she was supposed to be angry.. rejoined him "Yes Manu, they can be so disturbing.. 'can you change the colour to this.. and not that colour and I want this decor, change the fitting..blah blah..' But I am going there to make them sign on the contract. There will be no changes.. highlighted!! Believe me they agreed for signing!!"

Manav shook his head and was about to say something when the house phone rang and frowning Khanak walked towards the cordless to answer it, for some reason her heart thudding and racing as it was unusual for her land line to ring. Except for family and Manav very few had her land line number. She swallowed and murmured a soft tentative "Hello?" Her face blanched after a few seconds.. and a hoarse disbelieving shocked "NO!!!" was wrenched out from her throat!! she tried to grasp to the sideboard to support herself from falling while Manav turned and rushed to her to support her and ask in worry.. "Kanks!! What is it? Who is on the phone?" Trembling she spoke trying to clear her head she spoke urgently.. "Listen.. ma.. listen.. calm down.. please.. I.. I a..am.. coming Ma are you listening?" Manav frowned now knowing that something bad had happened and he waited holding her as she assured Ma. She took several deep breaths and then as Ma finally calmed she heard her talk and then assuring her that she was on the next available flight rang off...

Khanak turned to Manav and could not contain herself. She broke down after whispering "Manu, Papa, he.. he suffered from a heart attack.. I.. I have to go... I.." He gathered her shocked numb form in a warm embrace and murmured softly.. "Shh.. there.. there... it is going to be okay.. stop that!! Gather yourself Kanks!! Now you have to keep your sanity, do you hear me!!?" She shuddered visibly but got some control over herself and nodded as she gingerly wiped her tears and taking deep breaths spoke hoarsely.. "I.. I have to go.. ma needs me.." Manav nodded seeing the glassy look ease off from her lovely dark eyes. In the next hour Khanak was all packed and on her way to Bombay in Manav's private plane. All the while she had been chewing her nails off in a frenzied worry... that she did not remember her fear of flying nor the fact that she was on her way to meeting the one man that she was avoiding so many years!! 'Papa.. please.. please be okay....' She thanked her stars for having such a good friend in Manav. He had arranged for everything and had co-ordinated with the Khurana's and her cousin Mahi had stepped in too assuring her that the meeting will be taken care of.. she was worried for papa's health now. He was strict where health was in question and this was a complete surprise to her...

left me craving for more !!!

I am loving this relationship between Manav and Khanak........Good friends with an unsaid ease and comfort that comes only with genuine care for the other.....
Good, that you told in prologue itself that Manav loves Mahi and knows that Khanak loves someone else..otherwse I would have really worried about a triangle..............so comfortable Khanak and Manav are with each other.
loved their interaction in the morning and hope her dad is well !!!

your writing style has always left me spellbound......what a flow, what an ease and a storyteller's confidence. You know your character's inside out, isn't it ??

cannot believe you finally wrote..kudos to you..first thing I checked after getting off my flight..am so glad you followed your calling sweetie..I am (who isn't) a huge fan of Pride and Prejudice and love the BBC version the most -yep the one with Colin Firth..it is by far the bestest PP IMO..I cannot wait to see your Shanak unfold in your version..front seat with popcorn ..I am so sorry but am extremely sporadic here, wish twas not the case..please please PM me..shall comment soon..

Okay so am here..after reading the first part...
so dad ke heartattak ke avsar par Khanak apni heart de aayegee..wah! wah! wah!..why do I think the childhood love is Suraj and nothing to do with Shaan..will Shaan 'reject' her and find her 'tolerable but not pretty enough to tempt him'... ??
