Hey, read your ff at one go and loved it...Your story is very refreshing and so are the characters.

Geet is just normal, Dev is confused and Maan currently is just driven by his heart without knowing why. Neither is Dev anything more than a convenience friend, nor is Geet any more than an acquaintance. Wonder when he will spare some thoughts from his busy schedule...

Waiting for the next update...please update soon.😊

Hello,

Thank you very much for the comment. Maan here is just being another guy. He is not important at the moment for Geet or for Dev. He is helping them both in smallest of way possible.

Thanks,
E

Chapter 7: De-arch

It had taken her few weeks settle into the routine that she was originally accustomed to. There were times when she could see glimpses of Dev intermingled with the familiarity and redundancy of her routine. At first she thought that they were residual images left behind him in her life but she was surprised to find him actually tailing her every once in a while. Neither made a move to interact with one another. She didn't care for what he wanted with her and in her mind she had put an end to Dev's episode. She didn't dwell into it much as she worked even more than before. Being a surgical nurse took all her concentration and awareness with it and the leftovers didn't help her to mull and despair over her situation. In a way life was moving on though she wished for social distraction at times.

It was three weeks since she had dropped Dev to his house from bar Lapin. She hadn't seen Maan or spoken to him once she stopped visiting the bar. There wasn't a need to disrupt his daily routine all over again and they never crossed paths. There were times when she wanted to pick phone and make a casual social call. But she stopped herself every time that thought crossed her mind.

When she took the regular high stool in the caf where she used to work before, she was surprised to find Dev sitting in a corner where lighting didn't reach very well. She didn't know what he wanted from her. So she asked.

"Why are you here Dev?" She asked him discarding her stool and taking one right next to him.

"You know Geet I have been visiting all the establishments where we used to socialize."

"Is that your definition of retrospection Dev?" She asked sipping coffee. She was surprised at the way it hurt lesser every time she met him and spoke to him. There were unfamiliar and unchartered territories in his personality which were brought to light because of their predicament. Many people spend their whole lives not seeing or ever encountering a side of their partner because the circumstances never really arrive. There were many "What If" scenarios which ran in her mind mostly in the lines of what would have happened if this incident had occurred post marriage. Would he still have left her?

"No Geet. I was only trying to seek comfort which I have always felt in your company. I didn't know if that feeling of comfort was because of the places we visited or the feeling was enhanced because of you. I was only trying to find out." He said idly making patterns on condensation settled on the iced tea cup. Hopelessness on his face was palpable and she didn't miss the silent sigh he let out in the end.

"Is this your roundabout way of going and telling me that you miss my company?" She asked flatly.

"I don't know Geet. Maybe I just realized that living in a lonely life is a hard chore in itself. I had to put effort to entertain myself, to ensure that my mind was occupied most of the times and of course missing the feeling of comfortable companionship that one finds in friends and family." He sighed. Geet turned to look at Dev more closely. He looked older – the lines around his mouth looked more pronounced and hollow eyes added few years more on him. She didn't know what to reply. He didn't give her an opportunity to talk anyway.

"So here I am Geet trying to find some sort of friendship or companionship or even something even as simple as a familiar face. It makes the burden of my loneliness much lighter and presence of a familiar face sitting next to me makes my evenings shorter. And for some reason I cannot fathom, the company of others is making my loneliness even more terrible and heavy. So I thought somehow you were part of the equation that kept me grounded and you know, non-lonely I guess?" He downed his iced tea and ordered for one more. Geet only stared at him.

She kind of guessed that Dev was one of those people who had trouble keeping themselves company. He was rarely seen alone spending evening by himself unless he was physically exhausted or emotionally drained. He was a highly sociable guy and it felt odd seeing him being almost desperate for a familiar company. She wondered to what extent his decision had affected his own psyche.

"What are you looking for now Dev? We had something going on and you mucked it up. You made a choice at one of the turning points of our lives. By that choice you decided what you wanted. By that choice, you showed me how you viewed things about us and our future." She said not looking at him. She slowly rubbed her temples wondering how she missed out this part of Dev; the one which was insecure and terribly lonely. Was that the reason why he always made sure that he had some company of sort during most evenings? Even when she had to study, he just sat opposite to her in library and read a magazine or a novel. She had thought that he was being terribly sweet but was his motive self conservation without anything to give her credit for? That thought left a bitter taste in her mouth.

He didn't answer her for a long time. She didn't blame him for that. She had seen that hesitation in eyes of people she loved and respected the most and that had broken the unconditional trust she had one in people. In reality there is no way of determining which decision is right and which isn't. Each decision came with own set of repercussions. She didn't know under which path of decision did she fall into with respect to Dev's decision but from wherever she ended up with because of that, wasn't a pleasant one in the end. From her perspective, Dev's decision was simply plain wrong.

Once that trust was lost, it took her several years to trust a person enough to spill out things which came from her mind. And that man was Dev and he had managed to break her trust again. She learned the hard way that it was the cycle of life. There were no guarantee as to when people changed and when their perception of others changed and most importantly when their priorities changed. That being the case, her old cynical self had returned and she had dedicate all of her waking time to her work. It at least kept unnecessary thoughts at bay.

"I am not looking for love or anything of that grandeur Geet. I am looking for someone who will sit in the stool where you are sitting and drink iced tea with me." He said simply. There was no reason to lie and no reason to expect something new from her that evening.

He just wanted the day to end.

--o00o--

"Maan?" She hushed in surprise as she saw him standing near water fountain. He turned around to see her looking straight at him.

"Is everything alright?" She asked hurriedly. The hospital where she worked was the last place she expected to meet Maan.

"Yes, I am alright Geet. A friend of mine is in here. I came here to visit." She nodded in understanding as Maan explained his reason.

"Oh, there you are", he walked towards a woman who was limping. Her business attire was ruffled, blazer haphazardly thrown over her shoulder and heels in her hands. Maan gently picked all the things she was carrying to her hands and held her waist to support her weight on him and not on her leg.

"Geet, meet Maya, my girlfriend", he introduced them with a smile.

Geet only stared at Maan and the woman he stood next to.

Was Maan dating a woman older to him?

To be continued.
