"We find out how she became a vampire and what led her to become the person she is today — a selfish, maniacal woman who only looks out for herself," says Nina, who was born in Bulgaria and speaks Katherine's native tongue. How she's turned is a big secret, as is the identity of a new menace we'll meet from the same era, who will journey to present-day Mystic Falls.
"This villain has ties to the deep, deep past of the vampire legend," teases executive producer Julie Plec. "And then in our last episode before the holidays [December 9], we'll finally see poor Tyler Lockwood's torturous transformation into a werewolf."

The CW has released the official synopsis for episode 9 of "The Vampire Diaries", titled "Katerina". Another fabulous flashback filled episode that I've been super excited about for awhile. We get to see Katherine in 1492 and she'll be taking us on a tour of Bulgaria and London where we'll get to see just what her 'damage' is.
KATHERINE'S PAST IS REVEALED ' Elena (Nina Dobrev) puts herself in a dangerous position as she searches for the truth about Katherine's past and what her own future may hold. Knowing that Stefan (Paul Wesley) would never agree to her plan, Elena swears Caroline (Candica Accola) to secrecy. Damon (Ian Somerhalder) uses a new-found confidant to help him try to discover the real purpose and power of the moonstone. Jeremy (Steven R. McQueen) and Bonnie (Katerina Graham) meet Luka (guest star Bryton James), a new student with a surprising family history.
Caroline has lunch with Stefan in new Vampire Diaries episode 9 photo. The CW recently released a new photo from the upcoming "Vampire Diaries" episode 9 of season 2. The episode is entitled, "Katerina." This photos (above), shows Caroline talking alone with Stefan over lunch or something.
The conversation appears to be semi-intense. I can't wait to see what it's all about when it airs next week. In this episode, Bonnie is going to be spotted flirting with a new guy in town named Luka. He is supposed to eventually find out about Bonnie's witchy powers,and reveal some surprising family secrets of his own.
Damon will be spotted talking with new vampires Rose and Trevor. That should be real interesting,considering the fact that they kidnap Elena in tonight's episode 8. Elena will also get into some more trouble when searching for secrets about Katherine's past and what her own future may hold. It sounds pretty interesting.
"Vampire Diaries" episode 9 of season 2 airs next Thursday,November 11th at 7pm central time on the CW.
