Raavan Takes Big Hit On Monday

Tuesday 22nd June 2010 13.30 IST

Boxofficeindia.Com Trade Network

Raavan fell heavily on Monday as it recorded 2.25 crore nett business. The weekdays are likely to contribute around 7.50 crore nett going by the business on Monday.

This takes the Raavan four day business to 19.25 crore nett with the first week looking to finish at 23.50 crore nett. All the circuits across India fell 60-65% against Friday business and the Friday business itself was not very good.

Overall the film is likely to stay below the 30 core nett mark for its lifetime business.

Shobhaa de Reviews RAAVAN.
What a disaster, Sirji!

Such a pity, the much-awaited 'Dus Sarwalla' turned out to be an unmitigated disaster! If only Mani Sir had made better use of his own 'sar', perhaps 'Raavan' would have fared better. A friend from Bangalore sent me a message that was pretty telling, when I mentioned I was watching the movie that evening. " Do take a torch and a good book with you, dear," Prasad advised. I got the message but ignored him, telling myself ( as countless Ratnam fans must have ), nothing Mani attempts can be all that bad. In fact, Mani doesn't fall into the 'mediocre' category - even at his most uninspired. That's his genius. I hope this garbled and confused movie does not permanently tarnish the reputation of one of our most talented film makers. Simply put, it is a bloody bore. Too long, too tedious and too pointless. As for the performances , poor Abhishek dives down nose first in the very first scene – he doesn't come up for air after that. Not his fault ( I'm partial !). He is just such a loveable, good natured sort of chap, one just doesn't associate brutality and violence with someone like him. And if his dark side is meant to hit audiences between the eyes, it seems childish to underline the point via black make up smeared all over his face and body, just in case we dummies don't get the point. Between assorted face packs of haldi, ash ( not his beauteous wife, but 'raakh'), keechad and other muck, this Ravan ( Beera) grins goofily through his evil deeds and seems incapable of hurting a makhhi'. Meanwhile, it is Dev ( Ram, played by Mr. Scowl), who does little more than glower into the camera, his expression disappointingly blank thanks to those strange brown cosmetic lenses ( the sort starlets use for portfolio pics). No wonder his lovely wife ( Ragini alias Sita ) makes cow eyes at Raavan and treats the besotted villain to glimpses of her creamy cleavage to torment and tempt the man further.
Forget all that Naxalite-waxalite, Aryan-Dravidian, Good Vs. Evil conflict or symbolism. Mani can't seem to make up his mind about far more elementary issues – where the hell is the movie located and who are those strange looking tribals? Sometimes, the crowd scenes feature buxom village belles with streaked hair , super sexy backless cholis, city make-up, like extras from a Bhojpuri film. At other times the same bunch is dressed in sack cloth, but with colour coordinated accessories. Aishwarya's iridescent beauty is exploited in close- up after close- up, while her jungle make up goes from just mascara and the perfect lipglossed pout, to heavy duty eyeliner and blush on. But at least the make up is waterproof. Which is a good thing, since almost the entire film is shot under lashings of rain or a waterfall. As for the divine Ash's performance – what can she do if her director has her gagged (literally!) through most of the film? Worse, any self respecting heroine would also have lapsed into stupefied silence had she been forced to wear what must rank as the worst costumes ever! Sabyasachi…. really!!! First you do it to poor Vidya. And now Ash.
Moral of the story : One head is better than ten.

June 22, 2010, (Sawf News) - Raavan is soaring with weekend box office collections of Rs 68 crore worldwide, claims Reliance Big Entertainment, the film's global distributor.
Boxofficeindia.com places the film's weekend collections at Rs 29 crore, suggesting the film is in a nose dive.
The difference in perceptions could be because Reliance includes the tax collection in its projections, something Boxofficeindia.com doesn't do.
Since the tax collected goes to the government, there is no good reason for Reliance to be thrilled about it, unless they are plain patriotic. Reliance gives the split of earnings for Raavan's three versions as follows: Raavan (Hindi) Rs 53 crore Raavan (Telgu) Rs 4 crore Raavanan (Tamil) Rs 11 crore

Reliance would like us to believe that Ram Gopal Varma may have spoken too soon when he dubbed Raavan as Mani Ki Aag, because their film does not measure up to the gold standard that was RGV Ki Aag.

There has to be something really flawed about a film which is based on Ramayana, has Mani Ratnam at the helm of affairs, stars the Bachchan couple, boasts of music by A.R. Rahman and has the who's who from the technical department. Still, Raavan hasn't worked with the audience. We analyse why!

Boring narrative?
Everyone understands that Ramayana was about the triumph of good over evil. As an audience you are prepared to see what is going to unfold. But pray, why make it all so boring? This is where Raavan falters because a one-dimensional storyline just doesn't translate into a two hour film, which could hold your attention. All one gets to see is every actor in the film getting wet in the jungle and slipping or running through the rough terrain.

Abhishek's character - The weak link?
As for the lead actors, Abhishek Bachchan has definitely tried hard. In fact one can clearly sense that he has followed Mani's directions to the T and done whatever was asked of him. However, if the attempt was to bring the split personality side of his persona out, than sadly, it fails totally. It's the character which fails here, not Abhishek as an actor.

Aishwarya's character - Contradictory?
Aishwarya Bachchan's character is full of contradictions. Does she wish to end her life? Or does she not? Is the Stockholm's syndrome catching up with her? Is she falling for Raavan? Does she really get to her husband in the end? Well, you don't quite get it.

Confusing plot?
One never knows whether the outlaw (Abhishek Bachchan) is a Naxal, militant, rebel or something else? Yes, he the messiah of tribals but as it turns out, the entire drama revolves more around the personal enmity that he has with the cop (Vikram). But what about the bigger picture? Whatever happened to the entire Naxal angle? And if personal cause was supposed to be the driver of this entire episode, why have a Naxal angle at all? After all, the outlaw could well have been a corporate executive and that wouldn't have made any difference to the film at all.

Raavanan
: Too many heads and too little heart
Astroved News | Wednesday, 23 June , 2010, 14:07
Put together an avant-garde director, an undisputed music maestro, an acclaimed cameraperson, an ensemble cast, virgin locales and a timeless epic featuring the archetypal villain, and you get Raavanan. The year's most awaited film was unveiled on June 18. But did it prove to be the proverbial 'jewel in the crown' for Mani Ratnam? Interestingly, the celestial patterns have their own story to tell, and it largely matches with the actual movie-viewing experience. The original Raavana - whom we know from Tulsidas's epic - was a man of heady intensity. Be it his hatred for Rama, his devotion to Shiva, and his pride over his invincible powers, he was the perfect 'no-holds-barred' anti-hero. By highlighting the soft and humane side of the 'Raavanesque' Veera - played by Vikram - the director ends up confusing the audiences. Fittingly, fiery Mars points out that despite Mani's daring portrayal, the film will attract more criticism than praise. It is also worth noting what the stars have in store for the stars. Although the romantic Venus in the sign of Moon will make Aishwarya Rai the talking point, there won't be much appreciation for her performance. The film will add a new feather to actor Vikram's cap, but the planet Sun says it won't brighten the film's chances much. Mani's experimentation with kidnap dramas has borne fruits in the past - Roja was a blockbuster and Bombay won critical acclaim. But his presentation of India's most well-known abduction saga has left the viewer shaking his head. Evidently, the wisdom of Jupiter suggests that the public will expect a masterpiece, but might feel let down. Moreover, the planet of communication Mercury, placed in the 9th house, speaks of disappointment on the musical front.

The planetary combinations predict that the movie will not prove to be a money-spinner in the long run. It also indicates that while the Tamil version Raavanan will be accepted in the South, in the North the Hindi version Raavan will struggle to make an impact.

I think everything about this movie from script to performance to casting is horrible!

Loved the visuals tho. It's just magnificent.

I think Abhi should have played Dev's role. And Aish - My god! 20 years in the industry and this is your best yet? You cannot call yourself an actress. Her voice was so annoying esp the screeching. She screeches every time she says something. Abhi - You need to go back and do movies with Rani if you wanna stay in this industry! But I think he tried his best.

I saw the Tamil ver, its way better. Priyamani did a better job than Aish, if you ask me. And I remember there were reports saying Aish started speaking Tamil fluently during the making of the movie. But her voice is dubbed. And I was watching that interview with Rajeev Masand and that lady was like they are impressed by her Tamil. She just stood there smiling. No denial or anything!

Anyways go for it if you want to see the amazing visuals and good direction. And in south the movie is doing great business so it won't be major disaster.
